I live and garden in Leander, Texas, Zone 8B, about 20 minutes North of Austin.
Let's Protect Our Plants From The Freeze

Great nematode video I know who to go to if I ever have that problem!
Thank you so much! We are moving to central Texas summer/fall 2025! You have helped me get an idea of the plants that will do well! Thanks!
Love your tip of cutting mulch bag in two! Great idea!
Great advice, thank you!
I wanted to ask if you have had experience with a ‘little volcano bush’ and freezing in winter.
I really enjoyed seeing your indoor solutions and outdoor plan. I need to check out that amaryllis video!
Thanks for another great informative video 👍👍. Do you recommend any particular brand of frost cover for your outdoor plants?
Lot's of good advice. I am doing the same. Let's hope in 9a or 9b, we won't have a bad freeze this year.
Do Crepe Myrtles shrubs that are less than a year old need to be covered?
@@sherrymellor1031 If we get into the twenties I would cover them this first year.
Other than our edible garden - My ideology is to not grow plants that can't handle the temperature range. There are just to many plants to grow to bother and worry about it. I know this limits my selection, but I focus on growing various evergreens and hardy perennials. My potted plants are also various types of evergreen shrubs, so I don't bring them in or cover them.. In the edible garden - I do place potted fruit trees in our high tunnel and cover potted herbs and veggies as needed.
That is a great strategy, it makes gardening so much easier!
Potted plants need a great deal of protection and moisture monitoring in the cold temperatures here in Central Texas. Because of the February 2021 snow storm and a few other nasty cold spans since, I refuse to grow any shrub in the ground that isn't at least Zone 6 cold hardy. For perennials, most we grow are at least Zone 7 hardy. But if any of the perennials don't survive the winter, they are easier to replace than a maturing shrub.
Thanks got sharing! Great video!
What city in Texas was this video made?
the aphids in my yard all agree. they love it. mealybugs too.
Thanks for watching
We're pretty close to your location. The house builder in 2019 mounded up the soil in the front yard next to the house to create a planting bed. The lot slopes down toward the street, so water drains away from the foundation. I have been amending and also adding similar soil each season to where we now have a 22'x10' bed with workable soil to a depth of 10-12" (we also have a 12'x5' bed). In full sun 8a-5p in the spring/summer, we have Salvia, Abelia, Lantana, Buddleia, Pentas, and Gregg's Mistflower all thriving there now.
Sounds like your doing everything right! Thanks for watching!
Great job Cindy!
Thanks for watching and commenting!!
I’m glad you stated that our Texas natives don’t need the best dirt. I’m working on my front beds and some landscaping for spring, too.
Yes, they're the best things to plant
Looking forward to seeing what you plant here. Our property is 100% Caliche, so this is right up my alley :)
I'll keep sharing!
Very nice! I love using those juniper logs for borders and even terracing in erosion prone area, we have such an abundance of those trees here in the hill country and it feels good to repurpose the cut logs when I'm thinning and high pruning the trees in winter to reduce the fire risk. I love how your style is so natural and makes use of what you have available and simple designs to understand and install.
I totally agree! Thank you for the sweet compliments on my natural style!
very nice video. always helpful
Glad you're enjoying my videos neighbor!
I have never been told a good method to sow wildflower seeds. Thanks for the information
Glad to help
I look forward to seeing how your wildflowers and bluebonnets do next spring. I am just starting my gardening journey and enjoy your videos.
So glad you're watching. I'll keep sharing!
Hello! I found this one really informative and has good practical tips. Showing what you are doing is the best. I am looking forward to the spring to see what wildflowers bloom! 🥀
Glad it was helpful! I'm excited to see how they do, too!
Thank you for the amaryllis update 😊
My pleasure! It's fun to see a trial run do well!!
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Enjoyed taking a walk through your beautiful garden areas! Like you, love Texas sage, Mountain laurel, any native Texas plant. Did see a Century plant bloom several years ago which was spectacular. You did inspire me to love at evergreen shrubs and try to find a yucca. Live in small town n. of Victoria so supplies are limited. And been so hot, dry here. That will change soon. Thanks for sharing info and enjoy Thanksgiving 🦃🍁🍁🦃🦃🍗🎄🎄(coming).
You are so welcome! Hope you keep looking for good nurseries. Tell your local nurseries you want them to stock more native plants.
What a beautiful land love the house it's gorgeous also I love landscape.
Me too! She is very fortunate!
I LOVE plumbago!
Me too!! Plumbago blue is so eye catching!
I love your channel, very educational and I enjoy your pace. Beautiful property! Are you in the Fredericksburg area? I used to maintain the gardens over at a vineyard there, Augusta Vin, if you are in the area, would love you to do a tour there!
I'm outside of Austin, Tx. 1 1/2 hours from Fredericksburg. I'll see if they let me film their gardens. Thank you!
@@therockyhillgardener Yes, please do! If you call, please let them know Cheryl the Gardener referred you and they would likely allow you to tour the gardens prior to opening/customer arrival.
Thanks for your fall tour! I also have an American beauty berry. it was going to get the shade of an old hackberry! However, that tree fell. Do I need to move it so it is sheltered in our summer heat? In the beautiful town of Kerrville.
I would definitely move it! They will burn up in our extreme heat.
Wow, i had no idea Duranta got that tall. Probably because of where you live as mine only get, maybe 3 to 4 feet. But never makes it through our winters. Very pretty plant, though.
Yes, very tough and great for the Central Texas Area.
I enjoy watching your videos. I love gardening and your garden really does inspire me. I catch myself talking to you as if I was right next to you discussing plants 😂 Please keep the videos coming!
I think I hear you talking to me!!! Keep it up and I'll keep the videos coming!
Will Coleus over winter in the garage? I have 2 huge ones. I thought I would just lose them.
Yes, It will make it in the garage.
Great video. Very informative fact filled. I just found your channel and subscribed.
So glad you found me! I'll keep the videos coming.
Oh my goodness, I am literally taking notes from your video in the Notes app! ❤
Don't you love it!!! So easy to keep picture and video records as your garden changes.
Agapanthus struggles here in NC with our thick, clay soil. I’m thinking they are just really heavy feeders OR their roots need to be constrained in someway. Either in a pot or planted in a massive clump.
I'm going to put it in a pot next year. I can add more acid organic fertilizer. I really want to see it flower!
@@therockyhillgardenergreat, let us know how it goes! Happy thanksgiving, I am thankful for you and your garden!
No stores in Houston are participating last I checked.
Ahhhh! That's too bad!
💚 Thank you for another wonderfully informative video! I live in north Texas and my yard and flowerbeds are only a fraction of the size of yours. However I’ve learned SO MUCH from you this year. I’ve taken your advice and converted all of my plants to native Texas plants. I also learned recently that we still have time to plant things, since I thought being in November now, I had to wait until next spring. Thanks for sharing the books you use, and showing how we can record our gardening process using Notes! I didn’t know we could add photos and videos to Notes 👍. Two questions: Do birds seeds that fall from your feeders sprout into plants and if so, how do you manage? For the plants you put into your garage for the winter, what do you do about sunlight?
The seeds that fall from the bird feeders do sprout, but the ground there is called my "Wild Area" and I don't mind a few weeds in the area. They usually die soon since we get very little rain here. I do have a window in my garage which is a real plus. I know some people will leave the garage door open if you're home a lot. Otherwise, I suggest putting up a green house. There are inexpensive varieties called hoop houses, but you do have to heat them when our temps get really cold. (20 and teens.) I've never had much success with outdoor green houses. I know some people put Christmas lights in them and that seems to help with heating issues.
@@therockyhillgardener Thanks for your reply!
Dang squirrels! I’ve found a combination of cinnamon and cayenne pepper mixed into the soil to be very effective in keeping the squirrels away. Ants hate it too!
I’ve been looking at abelia as an evergreen shrub and may use a dwarf variety along the edges of my property. Good to see that you’ve been successful as I live just west of Burnet.
Yes, they've made it through all the freezes.
I was told years ago by a professor of horticulture that if a plant has green foliage and looks healthy but doesn’t bloom it most likely isn’t getting enough sunlight.
I agree.
I put pinecones in my plants to keep squires out of the potted plants. I’m North central Texas.
Great Idea! I'll try it
@@therockyhillgardener let me know if it works. I’ve also head of a mesh wire you put around plants that keep the little snots out. The only thing we get from squirrels is irritation they throw pecans at the eggy.l}
Can amaryllis be planted outside?
Yes, depending on where you live. Houston area has a lot of success with outside plantings.
Beautiful space, I love your layout
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching!
Perfect timing! I also have two "baby" Texas sages (north central San Antonio). A lot of the leaves are brown. But, now that I've watched this video, I see that there are little nodules that look like they may develop into leaves. The stems also bend instead of break, so they're not completely dried up. I was about ro give up, but now I'll just keep watering and be patient. Thank you!
Yes! I hope others will read your comments. If the stems are bendable they're alive. Patience, Patience, Patience!
Hi there! Just seeing this video…so I’m a bit late to the party. I’ve never heard of this disease. I’ve got a question. So I’m in the Texas panhandle…an hour east of Amarillo. I’m a zone 7a. Do you think it might get too cold here for them to overwinter? Or does that really not matter?
I don't think it matters. But ask your county extension agent for more information relevant to the Panhandle area.
I live in northwest San Antonio and I recognize those tool. That’s a mighty big hole. Great video.
With those tools, we can dig and plant lots of beautiful things.
Great video! I know where I went wrong 😂 lol, I now understand why some of my shurbs didn't make it.
So glad I could help out.
Looks great
I agree!
I live in Colorado but our basements are all heated and the garage temp fluctuates too much. So I also do the refrigerator method. I'm behind and mine just went in. I will have blooms for Valentine's day. But it does work!
Thanks for the encouragement! Mine are shooting up! I put a heat mat under them and it's really helping.
Where can we buy moss? It looks so pretty. I’m ready to get my bulbs out of the fridge!
