Cyclone Chido Hits Mozambique | December 2024 Update
Cyclone Chido has made landfall south of Pemba, Mozambique, with devastating effects. As one of the most powerful storms in recent years, Chido brought winds exceeding 220 km/h (137 mph) and torrential rains, causing catastrophic damage across the region. Over 250 mm (10 inches) of rainfall within 24 hours triggered widespread flooding and mudslides, further compounding the destruction in Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces.
The storm's impact has been severe, with reports of destroyed homes, schools, and healthcare facilities. Communication lines in Pemba have been cut since early Sunday morning, leaving many residents stranded and unable to reach out for help. Emergency services, including UNICEF and local authorities, are working tirelessly to provide essential aid, including shelter, food, and medical assistance.
Cyclone Chido's path of destruction began in Mayotte, where it claimed at least 14 lives before intensifying over the Mozambique Channel. The UN has warned of long-term consequences for the region, as heavy rainfall continues to inundate communities, threatening livelihoods and safety.
