It's okay to have a boring color grade
I loved Luca Guadagnino's new film CHALLENGERS. The score, the acting, and the script are all fantastic. But maybe my favorite part was the cinematography. The color grade on the film is naturalistic, which is a nice change of pace from the onslaught of filmmakers trying to make their work look like JOKER.
CHALLENGERS doesn't feel the need to have an extreme color grade, it allows the visuals to be clean and natural, giving way to more expressionistic camerawork and letting the performances of the actors shine. There's no split tone, no whacky Kodak 2383 film emulation LUTs, just good visuals to accompany a great movie.
In this video I talk about why more films should embrace a naturalistic look like this.

A conversation about screenwriting with a Slamdance script reader
Переглядів 22 тис.28 днів тому
I sat down with one of my most talented friends, Joslyn Jensen. She's an accomplished actor, screenwriter, and script reader for festival competitions like Slamdance. By her account she reads over 200 scripts a year. We get into what she's come across in all the scripts she's read: common red flags, what makes a script stand out, if screenplay competitions are worth it, what's she's learned for...
This filmmaker made 40 feature films in 13 years

Rainer Werner Fassbinder is a deeply fascinating and polarizing filmmaker. In his short life and career, he produced over 40 feature films and 24 plays, all in the span of 13 years. His films are provocative daring and he has a devoted fan base. But others find his work boring, bizarre, or offensive. He was also a problematic person on and off set, including abusive and cruel behavior towards m...
Don't buy a new Blackmagic camera

Blackmagic just released the new URSA Cine 12k and the PYXIS 6k and its got the entire internet abuzz. Everyone is raving about the new offerings but I can almost guarentee you that you don't need to buy one. All companies have to continually release new products to earn profit and to stay relevant. And it's not just Blackmagic: Apple, RED, Sony, Panasonic all release new versions of their prod...

This book changed the way I write
Переглядів 9 тис.2 місяці тому
I recently read George Saunders' book "A Swim In a Pond In The Rain" which is a collection of Russian short stories which he uses to illustrate principles about writing. It's aimed at fiction writers, but after finishing the book I was blown away by the amazing knowledge that I feel could easily be applied to filmmaking. The book is a condensed version of a class that he has taught at Syracuse ...
You don't know what method acting is
Переглядів 4722 місяці тому
Most people misuse the term "method acting", usually using it to refer to an actor who gives an intense performance, does extensive research for a role, or stays in character throughout filming. But none of those are actually part of The Method, which is a real, definable, practicle acting tool that can be learned. Many actors that people commonly associate with "method acting" like Leonardo Di...

The weirdest movie I've ever seen

Today we're discussing Clint Eastwood's 2018 film "The 15:17 To Paris", which is inadventently a surreal cinematic experiment on par with anything in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The film is based on the 2015 Thalys terrorist attack where a man wielding guns and knives was subdued by three American servicemembers. When deciding to make a film depicting the events Clint Eastwood m...
The BEST advice for first time filmmakers
Переглядів 8493 місяці тому
"Get out there and make the next one as quickly as possible" This is the advice that Spike Lee gave to AMERICAN FICTION writer/director Cord Jefferson, and I think it's single handedly the best advice that a first time filmmaker can get. There is a huge drop off of first time filmmakers who become "one and done" directors and never make a second project. I think this is because too many filmmak...

Writing coming from a hive of people who are not the same is how you destroy good scripts and turn them in The Rings of Power of some other shite like that. Sinular voices with a singular vision retains the creativity and doesn't dilute the story with DEI crap.
Shane Black, imo started the whole talking to the reader. All his scripts did it.
Could you please reign in the use of 'like'. Thank you.
I wish this was twice as long as it is lol (you should do one with Frank too)
If you've read the screenplay before watching the movie-which I strongly advise-you'll likely agree that the script is superior to the film. It's a quintessential Shakespearean-esque tale of two testosterone-fueled young men vying for the attention of a young woman -- nothing else was needed. Sadly, the director imposed his own woke agenda onto the script, ultimately making it worse. Any real writer should feel infuriated by it. Edit: It's also ridiculous that this film cost 55 mil. Why?? How?? On what?? Was Zendaya paid 50 million? Plus, the score is horrible. I don' t care how much people love sucking Trent Reznor's and Atticus Ross c*cks.
Her cute face made me watch 'til the end.

Fincher: great director or indecisive filmmaker?
Maybe both?
That was great. Very informative and as a screen writer quite refreshing to hear! Look forward to your next video!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I really apprciate you guys for taking out the time to create this. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
These two said the word "like" so often I felt as if I was at some high schooler's chill session. I just couldn't get through it.
Sorry you're not chill enough.
I have a terrible time with “like” also
Beautiful. And real.
That was a fantastic and inspiring deep dive into her understanding of screenwriting. I'll have to listen to this periodically to keep her fine points in the forefront of my mind as I work on my own screenwriting. I like the part where she said that the logline is a portal. That will always stick with me now whenever I write a logline.
Watched this video about a month ago, and had never heard of this book. Decided that I wanted to go out and read it and then come back and comment. Thank you for recommending this book. Easily the most helpful and inspiring book on reading and writing fiction I’ve ever read.
Awesome! So glad you found it as helpful as I did.
Film festivals should be non-profit, not for-profit.
Sorry but u speak like a simplistic person. U think u are talking about unexchangable values that underly conflicting political statements, but u are only buying the antagonical aesthetics of this opposite discourses that are fed by the superficial perception reinforced by current media. Information conglomerates are profiting from people like you.
Thank you..
Thanks. It's good to know what readers are looking for. I mean, aside from the race and gender of the author. Obviously those are the most important things.
Let me guess, only wrote scripts that are about feminist ideology and how masculinity is bad, etc?
Yep!
I really liked that! I hope you do a regular conversation series with her. I think the thing she kept harping on - how there should be subtext in films, how she liked that script where a couple were having sex and then you discover later that they are married to different people - that Possum logline ------ all those things required the audience to connect two dots the writer set up, but which they did not join for the reader. But when the audience makes that connection themselves, they get a little jolt of dopamine. I bet she likes puzzles too.
Sigh...... this is just a bunch of common sense BS. What a waste of a video.
good luck with your career!
Sounds like these scripts have to please a wide variety of people to win.
Great work!
What a fantastic conversation. I love how personal it is, and how it doesn't try to be 'ideal'.
This is really great. Fantastic interview and super insightful wisdom from her.
This is great content; she seems very genuine rather than trying to sell you on something.
most commonly used word - Like.
Also, the thing is, an experienced actor will only put up with Mamet-style "direction" from Mamet. If you're not David Mamet and told an actor who had a question "It's all in the words" they'd probably give up on you and forge their own path.
Yeah, I think myself and the majority of actors take issue with Mamet's dogma that a character is all in the words. Just say the dialogue in a straightforward, uninflected manner and it'll all be there. Dialogue can be interpreted in any number of ways -- even his dialogue. Mamet just won't acknowledge that.
Great interview marred by bad sound for half of it. Always monitor your recording.
Yep
Great point about trailer spoilers. Personally I believe nothing from the second half of the flick should be in the trailer, UNLESS it’s a misrepresentation. Love letting the audience go “I know wat happens here” and then “wait what?”
Cool - love it, man!
Thank you for fixing the audio lol
Great video! for future use, I'd use Adobe's Free Audio Cleanup tool to remove the echo and make everything sound fantastic!
Brilliant. So much great info to implement. Thank you for sharing.
Ya’ll ever go to like a video twice
Its very hard to act. As a director you should try it at least once. Ive done it a handful of times even in my own movies and im very hit or miss.
Can you say the word “like” a few THOUSAND more times????!!!! C’mon!!! I can listen no longer.
best just to leave

One of the best screenwriting interviews! I’ve written 30+ scripts, won awards and had two features made that were internationally distributed. Still so much to learn and reenforce. Love what she said about subtext, as that’s one of the biggest falls in badly made movies and TV. We speak in subtext constantly - every time we speak nicely to a boss we hate, every time our wife says I’M FINE!!! - and she’s not actually fine, every time we speak in one way, while hiding another emotion behind it. And Joslyn’s gorgeous. Thanks for the eye candy.
I was vibing with this comment up until the last 2 sentences. What the fuck bro.
No one had to take his abuse. History is full of creatives who didn't care a fuck about how they got shit done. Good for him. If you don't want to be abused or treated badly by someone else, take responsibility for yourself. Thnaks for turning me on to this guy though, going to check out some rooms and walls.
Good take, man! In this regard, I like the audacity Steven Soderberg showed time and time again shooting on iPhone and applying the most economical way of making films. Would love to hear your thought on this as well!
I love Soderbergh!
*Modern mainstream* movies *sukk* because: 1) hammy dialogue 2) crude and tackyness (foul language / Gore and violence) 3) wooden characters (with actors that would fit in perfectly at IKEA/ a furniture store) Where's the subtlety? Where's the finesse? *Thankfully* - cause of *Internet* and _smartphones_ - *anyone* can tell and *anyone can make a story* and share. Stay happy everyone:)
What’s a modern movie you like?
