On this channel I do rock chip repairs and crack repairs in windshields. These videos are not intended to teach you anything about the business or doing repairs, it's just for entertainment purposes. This channel is about my business and what I do and how I do repairs, if you are thinking about starting a business such as this, it's best to take a class to learn the proper way of doing repairs and then make sure you get the proper state registration and licenses that apply in your area, and insurance. Again this channel is not intended to teach you anything it's here to provide entertainment and to show you as a customer what to expect from one of my repairs.

    Hi Bill, what are the disadvantages of using your thinner resin for all repairs? The advantage is that it will completely fill each stonechip.

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl 5 днів тому

      It will fill them but it will still be visible I tell people they will still see the ghost of the chip, but using the medium I can make the completely invisible except for the pit most of the time.

    Thanks Bill. Have you thought about a tiny heater like your pocket warmers that you stick on the inside glass to help the resin flow? It is just so easy to over heat with a lighter producing a permanent "flowering" result when the resin won't flow.

      don't know why you would go broke doing crack repairs. the point of the repair is just to keep it from cracking farther so they don't have to buy a windshield. the repair is not meant to make the it completely invisible, and I always tell my customers that they will most likely still be able to see it, but it will much less visible and it will keep the windshield from breaking more so they won't have to replace it any time soon. This is mostly for people that don't have glass insurance and they can't afford to pay for a windshield out of pocket. if they have glass coverage on their insurance I normally just tell them to get it replaced.

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl

      it's a 365 NM uv light designed for curing resin fast. it's the same thing you get from the sun and if you are in a hurry to finish a job it's great, but like on this one, I can tape it then go on to fixing the next one and just let the sun cure it., the tape enhances the uv rays and make it cure much faster so by the time I was finished repairing the second one, the first one was cured and done as well.

    Do you fix cracks that go to the edge? If so, how? So many shops dont fix edge long cracks.

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl Місяць тому

      I fix all cracks even ones that go to the edge of the glass, if you don't fill the entire crack you can have problems later. there is trick though. if you have two tools like mine, when you can't use the crack expander, just attach the other tool the glass a close to the crack and lift slightly as you are filling it, that will open it and you can fill all the way to the edge, this also works if the crack is close to the edge and you can't use an expander on those. I think that is what you were asking.

    • @TheMassweapon
      @TheMassweapon Місяць тому

      @@ChipHappens-fz1fl by lift do you mean untwist the injector a few turns so its not as tight on the glass?

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl Місяць тому

      No what I am saying, is that you are using one tool to fill the crack, with the second tool if you have one, you suction it to the glass on the other side of the crack and just lift up on it, so it opens the crack a bit so you can fill it better, but that only works if you have two tools, if you only have one tool and the crack is close to the edge, then you can roll down the window and reach in and push up on the glass with your hand that also works.

      I have marked out 1/8th inch and 1/4 inch lines so I can decide by looking at the crack if I want to drill an 1/8th of an inch from the end or a 1/4 of an inch from the end. it will depend on if you can see a hair line off the end of the crack if so then you want to drill a little further from the visible end.

      I don't to be honest, I use the one because I don't want to be putting a lot of pressure on the windshield, I have seen people using two or three on a long crack and while they are trying to do the repair, because of that much pressure the windshield would end up creating another crack off that one. and going a different direction.

      it's just a stainless steel drinking straw that I cut down to size. its great because you no longer have resin getting caught in the threads of the tool and you use a lot less resin as well because it goes all the way to the bottom of the tool, and on top of that you get more resin into the chip that way instead of it all getting tangled in the threads of the tool and not making it to the bottom. Hope that helps.

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl Місяць тому

      I used diamond clear resin, the thin resin if it's below 35 degrees F most of the time, but then it will depend on how warm the glass is as well, I normally go by the feel of the glass, if it's cold to the touch, I use the thin if it's warm to the touch being in the sun I will use Medium and if it's really hot in the summer I will use the thick resin. If the windshield has been wet I don't do the repair because water will be in the chip, so I will tell my customer to put a couple drops of 91% alcohol on the chip with a Q-tip and park it with the windshield facing the sun, I can then do the repair within a couple hours after that because the Alcohol will evaporate taking the moister with it.

      Right on, I'm glad that worked for you. I wouldn't waste any more trying to fix that little line, because it most likely won't make a difference, now the next time it happens, make sure you leave the vacuum cycle a little longer, do it in the shade or keep it covered with a rag, then pressurize and cover again, then after two or three minutes if you still see the lines, do the vacuum cycle again and so on, you should be able to fill a chip 90% or more with that little tool, but it does take a little time. 70% on your first try is dam good though.

Also your view on my habit when repairing a chip: of inserting a long thin nail or similar down the bridge chamber and into the break and wiggling it in the hole to know the bridge is positioned exactly right. Then clamping the bridge, withdrawing the nail and then inserting the steel straw for the resin? Thus regardless of sun strike or poorly positioned mirror or awkwardness of seeing the chip break, the bridge will always be locked exactly over the break.

      I use regular Scotch Tape, just like you would use to wrap a present with, The reason is because it's a lot cheaper than buying the little plastic Squares, it's basically the same exact thing, and it works just as well or better. I hope that explains the reason for using tape instead of the mylar patches. Now I have tried using a needle putting down the barrel to line the tool up right over the pit break on the chip, but to be hones in most cases that just takes me longer to do than just lining the tool up with the mirror, But I will say that if that works well for you then by all means do it that way for sure, We all have to figure out what works best for us and makes things easier. What works for me may not work for you and visa versa.

    Hi Bill, love your work. What is the spray ratio of water to alcohol that you use just before scrapping the cured resin off?

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl 3 місяці тому

      honestly I don't have a special ratio, I put some alcohol in the bottle and fill it with water, but if I were to guess I would say, in this little bottle, I use about three table spoons of alcohol and the rest water. if you use to much alcohol it will evaporate very quickly before you have a chance to scrape it off.

    Would it help if you left the car engine on (with customer's approval, of course) and warmed the windscreen with the heater.

      Honestly I just needed to do a better job of cleaning the rubber on the tool and cleaning the windshield. I sometimes think that I am doing alright with all that but in the end I realize that I need to clean my tool much better at the end of the day, and I need to make sure I clean the glass much better before I get started.

    Question: How do you keep the O-rings on the piston from getting mutilated by the threading inside the cylinder? Do you have this problem?

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl 3 місяці тому

      I have never had that problem, but then again I change mine every time it starts to get tight when pressurizing, that means the O rings are swelled a lot and I just change them out, they are fairly cheap so I keep a bunch in my bag with me at all times, that way if they are going bad or it's getting too tight I can change them on the spot and make it easy again. Hope that helps.

    What brand of resin do you use? I just watched the crack video, how do you charge on those usually?

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl 4 місяці тому

      I used Diamond clear resin you can get it on Amazon, also I charge 10 dollars an inch to repair cracks because they take a lot longer than doing a chip and time is money.

      I tried clear shield and it's not as good as what I am using now, and here I take my time to make sure I get a good repair before leaving, That is why I can't work for another company because they want you to spend five minutes there and get to the next one no matter if you are finished or not. I can't work that way.

      every time I try to use one they just blow away, we have been having some really strong winds this year here in Utah, and most of the time I can get the crack repaired before the resin can cure, and if the part that cures is already repaired then it's really not a problem for me most of the time.

    But you need to be more patient and not complain so much to your customer about your tools because then that’s when them think you dont have good equipment just do your best and most of the time it’s comes it good like this one I live in San Antonio and we charge 85 for a chip

    • @ChipHappens-fz1fl
      @ChipHappens-fz1fl 4 місяці тому

      I rarely complain, and you will rarely see that on video, but my videos are real, and when I do get frustrated I'm not going to hide that because I want people to see the truth of things and how I handle it. Just like she said, she get's frustrated all the time so she understands what's happening. I didn't get angry just a little frustrated, and explained why the tool wasn't sealing. Most of the places around here charge 70 or more to do one repair, hence the reason I am getting lot's of work right now. When it's too expensive people will just wait for the windshield to crack and then replace it using their insurance.

      right on thank you very much. I always want to show the true nature of things because honestly there are just too many fake people on you tube showing that every day is perfect and every job is perfect and in reality we all get frustrated and we all have days where things doing go well, this way customers and people watching know I am real, and not pretending to be someone I am not.... Thanks for the comments and have a fantastic day as well.

      Because crack fill is no different than the thick resin, the lines were thick enough and the temperature was high enough that the thicker resin makes a better repair on this particular chip. I don't buy thick resin I just buy the crack fill because it's basically the same exact thing.
