My grandfather (who was a classical music fan, and one of the reasons I'm a pianist), always talked about Gieseking as one of the greatest. I had listen to so much music with him when I was a teenager... Later we became distant over politcal and family reasons. Now he's gone and I listen to this recording, while my 3 years old son sleeps at my side. The melancholy of this 2nd movement is special, and to me describes how short life is, in order to important things.

There is also part of the ending of Wagner's Rienzi overture in the soundtrack.

My favorite, bought this record in 1973. Emii Gilels is just great.

it's always welcome to see an LP on a turntable. even though this is a somewhat glacial rendition from this marvellous pianist. Of his Bach recordings his version of the organ prelude and fugue in Aminor (arranged by Liszt) is absolutely amazing.

The last movement of Beethoven 7 is one of the most goose bump raising things I've heard in all music. What he does with those massive string arpeggios just before the very end is beyond words. And this Solti recording is the apex. In my 20s and 30s I listened to it until the grooves were worn out. Thanks for posting it!

This record is particularly rare, but it's my favorite recording of the concerto 2nd and 3rd movements. If he had played the full first movement instead of making cuts, I'm sure I could say the same about that, too.

I was interested to hear this performance but there was a lot of distortion throughout. Either the record would benefit from some sort of cleaning or the distortion is in the groove.

excellent rendition of this piece. However, cracks and pops noises are very unpleasant. This intepretation deserves a remastered recording.

2nd movement was my grandfather’s favorite piano peace. I listened to this album with this cover at least 30 times. Gieseking is the best I’ve heard playing it. I like the Pathetic Sonata over the Moonlight-which was on the other side of the record.

Weissenberg is already a legend. Everything he played was crucial. Even if he is no more among us, he has left an extraordinary and unforgettable legacy.

All the poetry and the “innig” atmosphere perfectly captured; and the virtuoso moments never exaggerated but submitted to the general structure in utter perfection. Wonderful! So, here we have Levin's "reconstruction" that is mentioned in the wikipedia article on this piece. What I find blackly humorous is that the new, patched in material (starting around @8:37) suddenly doesn't sound like Mozart at all. Still, I admire his attempt to support the Mozart side of the argument (generally) rather than joining those who adduce dry snippets of evidence, like a gang of trial lawyers, to prove "in court" that "this can't possibly be by Mozart." There is a whole cottage industry of musicologists engaged in that debate. Do any of them ever stop to actually LISTEN to the piece? If they did, they would find that the only question worth pursuing is this: If it isn't by Mozart, then who was that musical genius who appeared on the scene just long enough to write this one piece, before vanishing into the night without a trace?
