Hamed Abdel-Samad on the "Downfall of the Islamic World"
Hamed Abdel-Samad (Arabic: حامد عبد الصمد‎, IPA: [ˈħæːmed ʕæbdesˈsˤɑmɑd]; born in 1972 in Gizeh, Egypt) is an Egyptian-German political scientist, historian and author.
The son of a Sunni Imam "converted from Islam to knowledge" as he says himself, after studying languages, political science and religious studies in Egypt, Germany and Japan. Abdel-Samad calls for an "Islam light" without shari'a, jihad, gender apartheid, proselytism and "entitlement mentality", aspects of Islam he thinks responsible for the backwardness of the Muslim countries and the Muslim diaspora. He has been accused of heresy in 2010 and condemned to death by various Islamic clerics, notably in June 2013 after a lecture he gave in Cairo.

Why do humanists care about religious historical monuments? They usually view them as heritage of all mankind. We care about the Buddah-statues of Bamian in Afghanistan and we do care about Cypriot Christian and Hellenic artwork. The behaviour of Turkey in Cyprus is indeed appalling and needs more exposure. I feel every post modern Christian goes through this experience if they stick to it throughout their childhood. I realized how bullshit religion was, I didn't believe anymore, I lost faith so I researched why I lost my will, and then I came back around and realized the wickedness of my own imagination is a lot less stable than the conception of God aka a perfect lord in my own mind and a perfect display of character to work off of.

    It's so easy to be a naysayer/non-believer. It requires only doubt and little effort. In my life, I have a deep belief in God or a higher power, which requires openness and insight into actions by God that others would dismiss or ignore. God won't make you believe, or force you to acknowledge him, but asks for faith. There's no downside to living a life of a believer, but the atheist spins a web of negativity with NO upside. Make your own choice.

      It's so easy to be a believer. It requires only ego-centrism and self-involved fantasies about how "special" you are, in the eyes of the very Creator of the Universe, no less. People who don't believe are naughty and negative - they think humans can't be spared from death, the inevitable fate of every living organism - so their life, being free of self-interested fantasies, has NO upside, they don't even get to live forever, in Paradise, because they aren't "special", as believers are. Etc.

    I think the weakness in Hitch's first answer is that he opens the door to "society" deciding that murder of adults might be legitimate under some circumstances. After all, he concedes that the fetus is a human being, so he no longer can draw any lines based on age of the human being. Of course, society DOES legitimize murder in some situations - we call it the death penalty. But my guess would have been that Hitch opposed capital punishment. That is a guess though, so please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    But now those wonderful Indians are destroying monastaries. How is that one single bit better? No - I'm afraid almost EVERYONE turns out to be a hypocrite. It's bad when they do it - but it's ok when we do it, because... "we're right." I'm sorry - that does not work for me. The first tenet that civilization has to be based on is tolerance of others. Respect for their right to live their lives as they choose.

  • @KipIngram
    @KipIngram Місяць тому

    Well, Hitch's first answer isn't really an answer. Yes, we have a conscience. But the guy is asking WHY we have a conscience, if it's all just physical. My own answer to this is simple - I DON'T think it's all just molecules in motion. I think "mind" is the fundamental thing in reality, and "the physical world" is just the aggregate perceptions of our collective minds. We all KNOW - every single one of us knows - that it is possible to have perceptions of a very realistic physical world without there being ANY actual events going on in the physical world to create those perceptions. We call this DREAMING. So yes - mind can gen up perceptions just fine - there should be no debate about that. What this point of view DOES NOT REQUIRE is a deity. It doesn't rule out the possibility of one deity, or many deities, but it doesn't mandate that one or more exist. And it certainly doesn't give us a "story" about how such a deity or deities may have intervened in history. So I think our minds are something special, and they come equipped with a conscience (usually), and that's just how the world is - it's just as basic as any other thing we simply accept about the world because we can see it right in front of us. At any rate, if the question is an argument at all, it's an argument for the preeminence of mind - not for any particular theological paradigm. There is just no need to go all the way to either extreme position on this question. Of course if you wish to remain hard core materialist, then this particular question isn't a problem for you. You can just invoke evolution. We have a conscience because having them promotes our survival. Those of us who are born without them tend to get into trouble with their peers and get eliminated from the gene pool. Maybe not every single time, but often enough to make it relatively rare. Notice that it's not wholly eliminated - there are sociopaths and psychopaths among us. The process, be it because "minds or fundamental" or because of evolution, is not perfect. On the other hand, you could ask that if conscience is God given, why on Earth does he pass over some people? I guess that's one of those "mysteries of the big plan" that we don't get to be privy to.

    I do not know and I do not care. This has become my mantra of late. Having lived for 70 years on this planet and having been interested and integral in my role as a human, I finally arrived at this place. I was involved and excited about two things early in life. Those two things were politics and religion. Around my forties I dropped out of both. I could see no reason for continuing in them.. After this, I had an epiphany that had been ruminating for decades in my mind. My conclusion was that since no one consulted anyone before being thrown into this thing called life, we could all be considered either prisoners or slaves or both. Therefore, I am not a citizen of any place and I do not care what happens to the human race. I am simply passing the time until the day when I am no more. Some have told me that my outlook is depressing and dismal. On the contrary, I have found it quite liberating. I do not have to wrestle with nor fear anything in this existence. I perceive it all as one would perceive going to the movies. It is simply entertainment.😀

    God does not give you what you desire. I love when religious, Magic Jesus theologians, lose an argument, they quickly resort to pointless threats from a non exsistant being. "Apollo is waiting for the right momment to strike" "Posideon will cause a storm." "God wills it." And the BEST belief that a christian holds dear. "The father, son, and holy ghost are one." That is called multiple personality disorder.
