Shanvaghera - Irish traditional folk music
Traditional Irish music from Shanvaghera.
Shanvaghera, my band with Sheena Vallely, Paul Kerins and Benjamin Trott.
Here we are playing a set of traditional Irish jigs - The Yellow Wattle, The Banks of Allan, Timmy Clifford's.
Shanvaghera met playing on the Bristol Irish session scene, and found a common love of the less-commonly played Irish tunes, played with lift and lilt.
Shanvaghera is…
Bradon Smith on fiddle. Bradon has been playing fiddle for 30 years, and is a well-known player on the Irish sessions scenes of Bristol, Bath and London. He likes exploring the less paddled backwaters of the Irish tunes tradition, and has a fondness for hornpipes.
Paul Kerins on tenor banjo. Hailing from Monaghan’s stony grey soil, Paul’s veins pump pure bogwater. His primary instrument is the Irish tenor banjo, but he will, on occasion, unholster his bouzouki for the craic. Listening to him play has a synaesthetic effect, to the point where you can almost smell turf smoke and silage.
Sheena Vallely on flute. Part of the legendary musical family from Armagh, Sheena cut her teeth playing at fleadhs and festivals all over Ireland. Since moving to England, she hasn’t stopped. While essentially traditional in style, her playing is characterised by its strong rhythm and drive. Sheena's playing recently featured as part of the national Irish TV broadcast of the 2023 Gradam Ceoil Awards (‘the Oscars of traditional music’).
Benjamin Trott on guitar. Ben’s chequered musical upbringing began with an unusual collage of listening to his dad play for Morris dance music on the flute, and Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds on vinyl. He ended up touring in Europe, Australia and America with the Tim Edey Trio, The Albion Band, Frogbelly and Symphony and Blackbeard’s Tea Party. Ben has lived in Bristol for over 10 years now and has been an active part of the local traditional folk music scene in Bristol and Bath. He brings his sensitive guitar arrangements to Shanvaghera’s sound.

Josephine's Waltz / Josefin's Waltz on fiddle
Переглядів 4965 місяців тому
Here's a beautiful waltz written by Swedish guitarist Roger Tallroth. Normally known as Josephine's Waltz here in England, or as Josefin's Waltz in many places, it's name as given by Roger himself is "Johsefins dopvals". It's a lovely but simple melody. I'll be putting up a full tutorial on playing this tune soon, here on my UA-cam channel and on learntoplaythefiddle.co.uk.
A Swedish fiddle tune on fiddle and hardanger fiddle (hardangerfele)
Переглядів 2086 місяців тому
This Swedish fiddle tune, named Juleofftan, is a favourite of mine. It is a Swedish Polska - the timing and rhythm may take some getting used to if you aren't familar with it! It is in 3/4 time, with strong beats on 1 and 3. But there is a syncopation that is reminiscent of both hornpipes and strathspeys. I also think they may be distantly related to hop jigs, but that's for another video. Here...
Uilleann pipes and fiddle - Two Irish jigs by Straight from the Jug
Переглядів 2468 місяців тому
Uilleann pipes and fiddle are a wonderful combination in traditional Irish music. Dominic Henderson (pipes) and Bradon Smith (fiddle) play as duo "Straight from the Jug". Here, they are playing two lovely Irish jigs. The first, The Old Flail, was written by Vincent Broderick. The second jig is The Yellow Wattle, by an unknown composer.
Si Bheag, Si Mhor - fiddle and uilleann pipes

Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór - played on Irish fiddle and uilleann pipes. This beautiful tune probably Turlough O' Carolan's most well known composition. Here I am playing Si Bheag, Si Mhor with the wonderful uilleann pipe player, and good friend of mine, Dominic Henderson. Si Bheag, Si Mhor translates as 'the little fairy mound, and the big fairy mound'. I will put the sheet music for our setting of Si B...

This is a great tune to learn as your first Irish slip jig on the fiddle. For the full tutorial, sign up for my upcoming Complete Irish Fiddler course, at learntoplaythefiddle.co.uk/courses It's a well-known slip jig, though many confuse it with another common slip jig, The Little Fair Canavans, or Na Ceannabháin Bhána. Irish fiddle - Polka - 'Riding on a Bale of Hay' (intermediate tutorial)

In this Irish fiddle tutorial, I'll teach you a polka - Riding on a Bale of Hay! Check learntoplaythefiddle.co.uk for more tutorials, including my Free Irish Fiddle course. This is a really fun polka to learn. It's probably not a beginner's tune, as it has a couple of slightly tricky phrases, and one note (D sharp) that doesn't crop up in a lot of fiddle tunes, so it's an intermediate tutorial....

I play the whole tune through first on the fiddle, then I play it through slowly and in close up so that you can work out the melody. I break down a passage in the B part that is slightly tricky on the fiddle and give you...

I find that flute players (and I play flute and whistle as well as fiddle) tend to think of it like your method #2. I usually first teach three equal main notes, with two short cuts (or a cut and strike or tap as I call them) to start; but then fatten up the cuts to the desired degree, even to the point of five equal notes*. Then after that is mastered, consider lengthening the first note, a la Kevin Burke; but I tend not to do that so much, because generally a long roll is over three eighth notes, and the rhythmic function of the ornament makes me want to show the eighth notes, not have a quarter note followed by a cluster of additional notes. The advantage of method #2 is that it supports that rhythmic function of the ornament. I agree that having the 1st finger down when playing a 2nd finger roll is a good idea...I usually play one note down as the lower grace note in a roll, and not being ready for it is inefficient. Third, to make the grace notes (cuts) 'pop out' more, consider moving the left-hand finger in a more circular movement, as opposed to straight up-and-down. If done right, you'll get a sort of pull-off effect. Finally, I think the key to Irish style isn't so much the ornamentation, but slurring in the right places - across bar lines when practical, and across the middle of the bar in some other places. *Some people teach this right off the bat, but I find the five-equal-notes method to sound kind of fussy and classical.
Marvellous sound……..
Wonderful rendition of a seldom heard tune. Many thanks for the listening pleasure
Great tunes. Thanks for posting. What are the names ?
Thank you! The tunes are The Yellow Wattle, the Banks of Allan, Timothy Clifford's

Are they harder to learn than a regular fiddle? Is the tuning different? Hello folk tunes. I recently fallen in love with American old time Appalachian... Can you suggest a good source for traditional tunes done On the hard digger?
So lovely version, thanks for sharing :)
Thanks @marybrunart! I really appreciate it.
love it
Thanks @lesleychamberlain9568! I really appreciate it.
Another one with Ward......Jim Ward's Downfall.
I know a reel Tom Ward's Downfall, is that the one you meant? Also sometimes called the Mountains of Mourne
@@learntoplaythefiddleYes,.....in the Scottish Scene it's called Jym(my) Ward's Downfall and the Irish name is TOM's. Interesting... "The Mountains Of Mourne".Never met in the Scottish Scene. But...several titles for the same tune...it happens a lot in both Scottish and Irish. Scottish and Irish have lots of Trads, however, the Scottish Scene counts more "modern tunes", composed after WW2 And both scenes have several Trads in common.Sadly, books of this topic are hard to get,or even not in circulation at all.
Great rendition.
Thank you Liam! really appreciate it.
Fine auld tune
Isn't it just!

Thanks! I learned a lot from this
Glad it was helpful!
I love this tune so much! It’s beautiful in both scales, but I think I like your D minor version best…it has a certain moodiness about it, ya know? I’m a beginner and I’ve added it to my fiddle tune wish list. Thank you so much, Brandon! I’m enjoying your channel 😊
Thank you! Yes it's a lovely tune, I totally know what you mean about moodiness. Good luck with your fiddling!
