I Made A Journal for Playing Pokemon | Beginning Pokemon Emerald Seaglass
Huge shoutout to Nostalgic Nighthawk for inspiring this journal and the content on this channel! Please check out his videos here -
@nostalgicnighthawk
And another huge shoutout to Nemo622, the developer of Emerald Seaglass! His work is stellar, please make sure to check out his page -

The goal was to create a journal that I can use to document my progress as I play the game. I'd like to go back once I'm finished and get a feel for what I was thinking when I played the game and why I made each decision from one play session to the next. And I figured maybe other people would like to have their own so I'm also making it available for anyone who would like to make their own! I think an amazing use for this aside from personal use is if you have a child or young family member who is going to be playing Emerald, you can gift this to them or create it with them so they can write all their thoughts about the game!
Below is the link to a PDF you can use to print the journal in a booklet format, make sure to print it double-sided and flip on short edge to make it look like mine -
drive.google.com/file/d/1Jdu2X-VbujHvMehSvnQfAEAQr3Pi8Pao/view?usp=sharing
I used a "staple saddle stitch" method for binding the booklet, it was pretty easy all things considered and a tutorial can be found by Sea Lemon on UA-cam here -
ua-cam.com/video/BysUiyjB0jY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SeaLemon
This is the link to the Canva template so you can tinker with the design and personalize it however you like -
www.canva.com/design/DAGa3KLaeUI/RKuG6qRtgIw_FxQpsSnrqQ/view?DAGa3KLaeUI&mode=preview
I used Canva Pro so quite a few graphical elements require the Pro version, but they can be swapped out for free elements or you can also find your own online and upload them to Canva for your journal.
The vast majority of the artwork is sourced directly from Nintendo as they come from games or official artwork. As you'd expect, most of it is Ken Sugimori art but I'm sure a few pieces of artwork are from other artists.
Like I mentioned in the video, I'd like to extend credit for the cover image to Penguitt (@penguitt on X) as I simply reworked an existing design to say "Journal" instead of "Egglocke." Penguitt, If you see this and do not want your artwork used for this then please let me know and I'll make sure to switch it with a different Pokemon Emerald logo as I don't want to use any fan artwork unless the artist is 100% fine with it.
Please comment with any questions you have and definitely offer any suggestions for pages to add as I know this kind of journal has a lot of potential and this one only scratches the surface! I plan on updating this when I've finished my playthrough of Emerald Seaglass and eventually creating journals for Platinum, HG/SS, and Black2/White2. I'd love to see other people take the idea and expand it for other games they love like Scarlet/Violet or even spin-off games like Colosseum or XD: Gale of Darkness!

Epic video, I need to play through Seaglass‼️🕹🔥
This video inspired me to do the same for Emerald Legacy so i hope you keep up the good work :) thanks for recommending Nostalgic Nighthawk also ive been binging his videos since haha
That's a huge coincidence; I also named my character Ace
Forgot I had subscribed to this channel since we had chatted several years ago. Pleased to see you’re making content and to hear your voice. Love to see the passion. I hope you’re doing well!
Hey, just wanted to say I really liked this video. I like your perspective and the earnestness with which you are approaching the project. Kudos to you and I look forward to tuning in.
This is the coolest nostalgic jump I could have ever imagined to my childhood. I’m so hoping you make more videos and journals like these for other pokemon games!
This is really cool
I absolutely love this concept! And the notebook is so well designed! I'd love to do something like this for Sun & Moon
I cant find coin case in this new version, i think its lost
It was beautiful, I wanted to play it on the Nintendo 3ds 😢
Nostalgic Nighthawk has been on a good influence on all of us :)
Really here for this, just downloaded Seaglass onto a retro handheld to take the journey too. Looking forward to future videos
This journal is so finely crafted. I really enjoyed hearing your process. Thank you for sharing your creation!
I made a subtle connection between this video style and Nostalgic Nighthawks style. Was so happy to see you mentioned him as a shoutout. I subbed. Love this style of content bro!
legendary yt homepage pull, so cool
Subscribed! Looking forward to the updates, i follow nostalgicnighthawk and love his videos. Keep up the good work!
super cute notebook design!!! gives me nostalgia when i used to scribble down info into my Pokemon Ultimate Edition. Cant wait to see where this channel goes
This is awesome to see. Its really great to see how many people have been inspired by nighthawk. keep goin man. you have something really special here.
It too have started a Nighthawk journey. Playing the game slowly adds sooo much to the experience
Thank you for showing those guides. I never knew something like that existed. I remember as a kid reading the manual that came with Pokemon Diamond in the hope of finding something new about the game and the Sinooh region so if I had one of these I would've probably read it all the way start to finish. Funnily enough, while looking for a PDF of the book I even learned something new all these years later. Apparently according to it, if you defeat a legendary by accident you can make them respawn by defeating the elite 4 and the champion (at least some of them). I havent tested this but if true, it's a piece of info I never knew all these years. Also your journal looked cool. Not my kinda thing but I can see why people would enjoy using it :)
Yep this is true! This is something my friends told me, because they had played the game so many times and figured it out 🙂
I think IRL pokemon journals to keep track of goals/progress and creating a physical artifact of your experience playing the game are some of the most under explored aspects of playing this game. I also always wished that all these amazing rom hacks came with strategy guides you could thumb through
You know I really don't like when people say they don't like the way a particular poke game looks but honestly Seaglass looks awful with the white outlines. If the outlines were black or at least dark it wouldn't bother me but I tried to play it and just couldn't get past the white outlines. So what did you mean when you talked about a Poke game having "energy"? What does that even mean??? Are you saying you didn't like it because it kept the turn based mechanic?
@@Raphtor13 Not exactly, I didn't have an issue with the games still being turn-based. I meant more in terms of the dedication of the team behind Pokemon Legends: Arceus to optimize the game for Switch so it runs well (though it certainly isn't perfect, just better than Scarlet/Violet) and also the fact that elements introduced in PLA were missing in SV. I personally loved the emphasis on exploration that was present in PLA but haven't yet felt that from SV nearly as much, and I also loved the fact that in PLA you could move around in the middle of a battle so seeing that feature not make it into SV was a bit disappointing. I also learned they didn't keep the catching mechanic from PLA which was also a feature I loved, though it's possible they added it into the game and I simply didn't know about it. Hopefully that better articulates what I was referring to when I mentioned the game's "energy" :)
I modded my switch and also im having fun playing pokemon!!
Love this! I did something like this as a kid with Soul Silver, using stickers and drawings in my notebook. Very nostalgic, subscribed ❤
I loved these guides sooooo much as a kid. I've always been a reader, and would even read the smallest leaflet in a DS game packaging. With the guides, we'd bundle up as a group and just soak in all that knowledge over and over again and discuss about the best attacks, abilities, our favourite places and trainers, etc etc. We used it so much it completely disintegrated into a pile of loose pages... RIP Diamond & Pearl guide book <3
Good shit bro! If I had a better camera I could get like you but either way congrats!
wow that scrapbook/notebook is awesome! I should add some cool pictures and stuff in mine. My books are pretty bland XD Also thanks for the shout out and adding to the community. It does truly means a lot seeing others share their love for pokemon like this. Keep it up!! Would love to see more I bet many other do too.
It makes me very happy that you liked the journal and the video, your style of content is so unique and has genuinely made me fall back in love with Pokemon in a new way. Please make sure to show us if you decide to add any visual elements to your notebooks, for as much as I love writing I think I prefer the scrapbooking element a tiny bit more :)
I’m so curious how you got the rom hack on your switch, is it jailbroken?
Excited for this. Watching nostalgic nighthawk as well this is a very cool idea.
The diamond and Pearl guide was in two parts the second part had the Pokédex and items list
That's interesting! I noticed they had done that for HGSS but I didn't know they also did it for DP before Platinum, thanks for the info!
@ no problem the only reason I know is because I bought both back in the day, I love playing through the games with the guides
I’m about to start an emerald sea glass playthrough too so this was really nice to see. The book is really well done. Honestly I’m impressed with your video and your channel seems to be doing very well so far, Cheers 🎉
Just discovered nostalgia nighthawk recently and now you. I’d love to do a journal playthrough like you guys one day
Do it! I'm trying to get like them too but my camera holds me back
how were you able to get pokémon emerald on your switch? did you use homebrew?
Book looks official asf
Hey, I’m Nemo622, the developer of Emerald Seaglass! What are the odds that UA-cam would recommend this to me, huh? This is such a fun idea, I’m honored you’re playing my hack for this project! I’ll certainly be following this channel! :)
I'm so glad you got to see this!! I'm just now realizing that I didn't even shout you out in the video, so sorry for that! I'll make sure to add in the description that you're the dev so people can check you out and give you a follow 💚
This is awesome! I can't wait to see more from this channel! Also, what program did you use to design this journal?
@@bockrottom4877 I used PhotoShop to touch up some elements (like the berries) with minor color correction or to add outlines, and then I used Canva for the layout of the journal itself. The template is in the description so you're welcome to alter it however you want to get a design you're happy with! Just keep in mind that a lot of the elements in the journal are for Canva Pro users so those may need to be swapped out, but if you like the journal as it is then I included a link to a printable PDF that is ready to go! Make sure you print double-sided and select "Flip on Short Edge" 😄
Subscribed! I'm also printing out the journal and trying emerald sea glass!
@@NerbPrincess So glad to hear! I hope you enjoy the whole process! ☺️
Im doing the same right now (tho on Twitch) for Gen 4 and soon Gen 5. Nostalgic Nighthawk is such an amazing inspo! Imma Stick around here aswell, your vibes are super chill.
Just a note that the audio is very low on this video. I had to crank my volume up to 100% and still a bit hard to hear. Okay I'm gonna go watch the video now :)
Definitely noted!
Came here to say the same think. Just commenting for the algorithm. Thanks
I love it when the algorithm actually works and pushes me to stories I want to follow. I like the idea and the vibes. I'm right with ya
Same man. This video is right up my alley
I love physical pokemon media as well. Also, I would encourage you to reach out to the artist instead of just waiting to see if they're okay with that.
@@toxicink72 definitely a good idea, I loved this piece so much but I'm going to see about commissioning an artist to do a dedicated piece of cover art for this and any future work of this kind
@admnPB Great idea, great job, great video can't wait to see more
I see you took inspiration from @nostalgicnighthawk , but this sort of content just resonates with me a lot, i really enjoy the chill vibe it's like we're both on the sofa talking about the game and just having a good time, keep up the good work i'm all for it!!
That's definitely the vibe I feel when watching this style of content and I think it's making me fall in love with Pokemon all over again so I'm very grateful to be able to feel that now that I'm older 😸
