Will the virtual box run on boot without logging into the PC? I plan to install this on an desktop that is set to automatically power on upon being connected to power, and would want to insure that it comes up without having to log into a user account on the PC itself for it to come on and function.
And how do i use it without ethernet?
That is not supported.
Thank you for making this quick and simple video. Do you also have one on how to uninstall it from windows?
Is the configuration unique to the DreamMachine? I cannot find any SSID to track on my Unifi Express.
Unsure. I've never used a unifi express. I would imagine you'd still get device trackers from that though? Check the integration config. I know at some point after this video the developer made the decision to disable all the device trackers by default, so they never got created. You may have to run through the config and enable them.
@@fasthowto yeah, found the device tracker after a while, now it works!
@@tsint Awesome, glad to hear it!
I know you prefer rye, however, Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond bourbon is a fantastic daily drinker and I always have a bottle on hand.
Absolutely! I have several bottles of that on hand. Truth be told, bourbon was my first love, rye is relatively recent-ish. But fRYEday works much better than fBOURBONday, so... 😂😂 Thank you for the suggestion, though. Even though I already have that one, I'm always open to trying new stuff. Let me know if you have any other recommendations!
Stupidest design I've ever seen. There's no "up" position!! Traditionally, you press "up" to turn on a light, right? Been that way for 100 years. Not with these. You can only click down! Pressing "down" toggles the light on and off. So stupid. Can't beat the price, but having to explain to visitors how to use a friggin' light switch??!? A black eye for home automation.
I thought this story would be about all the annoying "Amazon Key" ads in the app which isn't even a service available in my area anyways. Fuck MyQ
Indeed, those ads are irritating, but not nearly as annoying as having to purchase a third party product to control a garage door opener that is already wifi connected....
Thanks for the video and detailled instructions. I will try that this weekend. My previous attempts at running HA under WSL have not been that great (mostly due to limitations of WSL). I also like your t-shirt, my daughter has the same one :)
I am looking to try out the Bond Bridge to get a better Spouse Approval Factor but........ Thank you. I just checked their compatibility checker and the FCC ID I entered for my ceiling fan came back to window blinds. A thought about your Garage Door issue. Check to see if charging == true then stop. If it's an iPhone you can also check the battery status because the iPhone boots when it reaches a battery level. You may also try a logic of if charging == true and goes from unavailable to home then stop. You may also be able to check charger type (AC(USB) or wireless) or if connected to Android Auto/Apple Car Play.
Glad to hear you found the info about the Bond helpful!! I had to think about your garage door suggestion for a minute. The charging idea almost had me hopping up and down shouting "EUREKA!", but then I realized she has a car charger, and would be hoppin mad if the garage door didn't open when she pulled in the driveway just because the phone was on the charger. Alas, her vehicle is older and does not have Android Auto - however, that is a GREAT idea for her next vehicle, and I'll be sure to implement that. In fact, that would be AWESOME if I could use "zone away -> home" && "connected to android auto" for both phones. That would TOTALLY solve another manual workaround that I had to put in place for when we are visiting neighbors or going for a walk around the block. When we ride with someone else, or are going for a walk, manually opening the garage door using the companion app is easy. *sigh* sounds like a "some day" solution. LOL But thank you, I hadn't thought of it! Thanks for watching!
@fasthowto would if home == true & Last Reboot <= 5 minutes then stop or include the charging?
@@mike_realityi I was thinking about this some more, and I'm not sure this is the right path. The only way to get charging info is via the companion app. The issue is that one of the triggers for home or away is the wifi connection status via a device tracker from Ubiquiti. This is necessary since I have a different automation that automatically enables and disables port forwarding. By default, when we are both home, all port forwarding is disabled. When one of the phones disconnects from wifi for 30 seconds, HA assumes we have left the house and enables the port forward rule to allow us to communicate via the companion app. I think I have need to rethink several pieces here to get this working the way I want.
I'm really enjoying your videos. If you are going to continue with the whiskey reviews maybe make chapters so it's easier to jump ahead. I look forward to watching the channel grow.
agreed - different audience.
Interesting. The chapters weren't working properly. They are now. Sorry about that!!!
@@fasthowto just a suggestion. I didn't read the description originally until you mentioned it in the video. If there is a channel I enjoy I'll watch the video without bothering with the description. Maybe when someone has a suggestion and compliments your channel don't reply back so hostilely.
You must have missed the last fRYEday video then. Rule #3: ALWAYS read the video description and the comments section on a video. I hope you never have to know the frustration of spending dozens of hours making a video, and doing the things people have asked for previously, only for those additional efforts to still not be good enough, or be ignored altogether. I've been advised by friends with much larger channels to just start ignoring the comments section for this very reason, but I'm still holding out hope that they are wrong. Time will tell.
@@pkrager5 Your comments were respectful, try not to read into it. Sounds like he's a bit frustrated or having an off day, which has little to do with you. - it happens.
agree, but about the Shelly, wifi version. I have +20, and work only locally, if you set it you have a bottle, do a good thing and take a better image. I will like to check 😊
I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're saying.. ?
Quick SmartHome & IT "Quick SHIT”
Would something like a "M5Stack AtomS3U" work for BT proxy. as I can't find any documentation on it since its essentially a small usb-stick with a ESP32-S3 chip. which would make it a lot easier to setup and use, as there is no need for casings/mounts and it is just a plug&play solution. that you can hide nearly everywhere
How can I change the washer & dryer icons, to black frontload machines?
@@Mert_C_Flerkins I'd imagine you could just find pics of them online and then put them in place of the original files?
This video worked for me to get started with HA, thanks!
Not sure what the issue was with the other one, but I'm glad this one worked for you! :)
out of date and does no longer work...
I'm gonna have to go ahead and say it's operator error. Commenters as recently as 3 days ago had no trouble...
@@fasthowto And that might very well be the case. For one I never found out how to get into "expert mode", and this video does not show how to do that, so... (And I do not have the "guided mode" button either!)
nice tip thanks I had some issues but it was flashing, problem solved!!!
Sweet, glad it worked for you. Thanks for watching!
how to find my device id?
Configure the code once through the UI and HA will find the device_id for you. That's how I do it, anyway. Thanks for watching!
Please do one of these that does not utilize Windows.
You just watched it....
@fasthowto what I just watched shows you need a Windows PC to run the software to set it up. I'm not just talking about the end result.
Feel free to use whatever you like.
Amen. Time is money. We have better shxt to do than save a few bucks or frustrate over something that "sort of" works.
Preach! Thanks for watching! :)
Currently, I've got 9 plugs and 9 switches by Kasa installed. Got started when I wanted remote (from inside house) control of deck lighting (controlled at outside switchbox). Fantastic solution! Used a dimmer (not a 3-way dimmer) switch and the brightness calibration took a little trial and error (mainly on low-end/off) but they work fine now. Have replaced "dumb" timers (for lights) and timer switches with these and only one issue..... Do you have any circuits with 3-way and 4-way switches (i.e. control lights from 3 or more locations) where you've used a Kasa 3-way switch? I've run into issues with a 3-way (non-dimmer) switch in a circuit that has a 4-way switch. I installed the Kasa 3-way in the line-side box. Switch functions normally when physically pushing it on/off; other switches ("dumb" 3-way and 4-way) also function normally. Trying to turn on/off switch from the app is another story. Probably too complex to describe here, but I've seen it in another video on Kasa switches. Basically, it works, but the status shown on the app doesn't always match actual status. I've used Kasa 3-way switch in another 3-way circuit (that doesn't have any 4-way switches) and it works fine. Finally, I initially bought the Kasa HS210 "kit" which contains two 3-way switches. I thought I could use each individual switch on separate 3-way circuits. Nope. Kasa claims the "kit" is sold for aesthetics. What you end up paying for is one smart switch and an expensive "dumb" switch. Kudos for running neutrals where needed! Can be challenging work.
I don't have anything other than 3-way switches in my house, no 4- or 5-way, sorry. The HS210 only requires one switch per 3-way circuit, I have many of them in my house. Over a dozen of them (I know, I know). Yes, running the neutrals can definitely be a challenge depending on construction and wire location, etc. It's worth the work, though (in my opinion, anyway). Thanks for watching!
Have you thought about simply running an Ethernet cable (low voltage in-wall from a closet that has a POE injector or POE switch) and using an Ethernet to USB adapter for power to the tablet? I’ve used the one from Ubiquiti to power a tablet for a corporate office.
While that is certainly a possibility (and may be a great solution for some viewers), it has far more cons than pros. Not everyone has poe available, or knows what poe is for starters. Lots of people don't even have robust wired networks, and instead rely on consumer-grade wireless solutions for their entire homes. The other is that poe will severely limit what devices can be placed there in the future. I have a sneaking suspicion that as my needs continue to increase, I'll wind up with that touchscreen pc mounted there, and that needs much more power than even poe++ is able to provide. Lastly, running brand new cable for poe really doesn't save you any work vs installing an outlet - you still have to cut the wall, you still need a j-box, and in the case of someone wanting to install a wall mounted tablet, say, in their bedroom on the second floor of their house, it would be a lot more difficult to get cat6 back to their closet than it would be to simply jump a couple feet of 14/2 from an outlet below the tablet. Tl;Dr - poe injection has its use cases, but I think installing a proper outlet is a far more universal and future proof solution when speaking in generalities. Great question though, and thanks for watching!
Great thoughts on future proofing a setup.
"apple products are not allowed in my household", subscribed.
Lol! Outstanding, thanks for the sub, and thank you for watching!
As far as tablet mounting goes, looks pretty good. I never understood people doing this though. If I wanted to get off my ass to turn a light off I would use the light switch.
Lol make no mistake, I certainly don't get off my ass from the parlor and walk to the kitchen to flip a lightswitch. But in the kitchen, I'm usually on my feet cooking or doing something else, so having it mounted up out of the way and not taking up any counter space is very convenient. Plus, guests use it CONSTANTLY. I'd say that's the single biggest benefit of it, for guests. Especially if you have small kids and a babysitter, for example.
@@fasthowto interesting point. I could see it with the babysitter. But otherwise, Guests really don't have any business messing with stuff like that IMO.
The QR code for the guests wifi, man.. It's either that, or I'm constantly fishing my phone out of my pocket. You can also limit what's seen on that dashboard - which is a good point that I should have mentioned in the video. Dammit. I designed a dashboard specifically for the tablet, and hid a lot of the stuff that I didn't want guests to have access to, like my home office and the bedrooms. But it's super convenient if I'm in the kitchen cooking and a couple buddies are over for drinks, and someone rings the doorbell. They can go over to the tablet and tap it and see who's at the door, then tap to let them in if I say to. The door will unlock, or the garage door will open, whatever you want. It's not for everyone, I'll give you that, but for the basics of turn on lights in the ground floor, handle media players (allows guests to play music from my collection or stream it from UA-cam music), stuff like that.
Great vid, thanks. What OS did you use on the touchscreen to facilitate Home Assistant as I never had any joy with 5 different SBC Android versions because of Webview versions issues preventing cameras from working properly.
Whatever version of Android was on it when I took it out of the box is what it's running. When you say "cameras"... Do you mean the cameras on the tablet, or are you referring to displaying camera feeds?
@@fasthowto The PC you linked to is the Lenovo ThinkCentre M920q which it says is running Windows 10 which is why I asked how you got Home Assistant on it. My experience with Android on PC's and SBC's is poor in regards to displaying camera feeds and touch screen compatibility so it'd be great to know what OS is underlying your Android version if yours is working well.
I'm a bit confused as to what you're asking about, exactly... The PC is running Windows 10, yes. No other software is installed on it aside from the drivers for the monitor. Home Assistant does not run on this machine. The tablet is running whatever version of Android came out of the box, and has the companion app installed on it. Does this help?
@@fasthowto So you just display Home Assistant in a browser window under Windows?
How else would you do it?
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
I did exactly the same thing in my kitchen. Touch screen monitor with a PC sat behind it in the place of a microwave. It's genius.
Absolutely. The monitor I got came with a stylus, too, so now we also use it as a notepad. I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner, it really was like a "where has this been all my life?!" kind of moment. LOL
How about "HAwk Eye" or "the HAmster Wheel"
How about "The Smart Guy"
You could create an automation for your wife's phone that when the battery level is below 5% HA disables the garage door automation.
I briefly considered that, but the unfortunate outcome would be that if she doesn't charge her phone, the garage door doesn't open for me either. Lol
Definitely name the channel the eager beaver!
I like checking out these mounting ideas. I need to mount a couple tablets as well. One of them will be in the wall just like yours, but I don't have a viable wall option so I have to use the Google tablet with its own table top cradle. It will keep the tablet at a nice angle and always charged. Good luck with the new name!
That's always a solid option. I have a tablet in the parlor that's in a case that props it up and it just remains plugged in. In the kitchen though, even though we have a goodly amount of counter space, there just never seems to be enough once one of us breaks out the ingredients and really gets to cooking. It's amazing how quickly it disappears with a mixer, a toaster, a couple knife blocks, a cutting board or two, and all the ingredients... These are the things that make this hobby so much fun, though - the fact that each of us face our own unique challenges to solve for, and the exact solution that is heaven-sent for one person won't work at all for someone else. I love a good challenge!
Microwave 😂🤣
Thanks for another great video Jeff! As a retired electrician I got that electrical work covered. I have needed the HA advice as that is the area I am a tad slow in. Also i loved your pronunciation of Microwave!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol thanks! Hopefully you found something of value in this video. If you're a retired electrician, then something tells me that nothing you saw in this video came as news to you - recessesed outlet, mounting bracket.. All pretty basic stuff. Thinking back to "clock outlets", right?
@@fasthowto Yes, but the outlet with the USB is a nice touch.
I have been wanting to do this. I would need to have it portrait mounted, want to include our family Google Calendar (either directly or via a HA connection), and I would need to have a place to mount our fan remote to it. I just am not sure if the place I have in mind would accommodate a receptacle or if I would need something else.
Portrait mode would work just fine, all modern tablets have auto-rotate built into them. Best way to figure out if you can install a recep is to use a stud finder to see what's behind the wall. As I mentioned the easiest way to do it is to mount it above an existing recep, since then you just need a few feet of 14/2 to jump from the lower recep up to the new addition. Of course, my location had no recep below it, so I had to drill through the footer into the basement and pull wire. It was lots of fun - but it works great now, and was totally worth it!! What type of fan? Is it not possible to add the fan to Home Assistant?
@@fasthowto There is an old switch box with power but it might be too close to the door frame. It also has the older cloth wrapped MC wire from the mid-1930s. The ceiling fan is a Hunter HunterExpress 54" ceiling fan with 433 MHz remote. I don't have a bridge yet. I also have a lower SAF, Spousal Approval Factor, when it come to integrating Tech into the house. I am working on raising it by trying to make their life easier and better.
@@mike_realityi Like I mentioned in the video, I'm no electrician, but given what you've told me so far, if I were a bettering man, I'd say you probably don't have the correct power. A lot of those old switches were just cut hots, and had no neutral in the box. You need neutral for a recep. Is there no recep on that wall anywhere that you can get power from? Drilling horizontally across stud bays is still not that bad with the correct tools.
@@fasthowto I can easily check. I believe other switch boxes had soldered and taped neutrals. If I see that I can always call my electrician. I want to avoid drilling due to plaster walls and the SAF. There is a recep about 3' away.
@mike_realityi if you have the ability to get an electrician that can do it for you, that would definitely be the best bet. Let me know how you get on. My wife loves the dashboard, it's very convenient - just be sure to pick the right location!
Smart Home RYEsing
Home Assistant is a great piece of software but the restore process stinks. Apart from a spinning wheel there is no indication anything is happening, it is taking hours and it still isnt finished. With all the fantastic changes occurring with HA i just wish someone would fix this dreadful piece of code. If HA wants to be user friendly and used by anyone who isnt a diehard techie then this needs fixing.
I agree. However, for how infrequently this feature actually gets used, there are a LOT of other areas for improvement that I really wish the Home Assistant team would focus on - like adding RBAC. That would be a HUGE win!!
I new to this and learn alot from your video's But im still stuck on getting a image send with my notification, Like on tab sending notification to phone and then DATA, how you get that link for your snapshot image that you wanna insert? That they only thing i cant figure out and bin at it for hours.
That's just the URL to where you saved the snapshot on your Home Assistant server, but it needs to be the external URL since your cell phone will connect across the internet. If you haven't yet set up your Home Assistant server to be available on the internet, I made a few videos about different ways to do that. Thanks for watching!
@@fasthowto thank for they reply. Had it working, till had to reinstall everything, now i forgot witch IP address do i use in in the Data?
not me sitting here with a box of m5 stacks that just arrived
I think it's a great idea to Install - demo - show some code & use cases of each variety and/or model of each type of device. EG. I got a whole bunch of contact sensors - but the battery life is crap - they often go off-line and are a real pain. Maybe another idea's for segment video's is how to troubleshoot different common issues. For example - my Home Assistant stops sort of - but not fully and I need to reboot it practically every day - That totally sux - I have seen error messages on the HA Hardware device but seems a bit difficult to read - let alone to work out where to start looking for answers - so IF you do need lots of HA errors to look up - I have I'm sure at least 5 video's worth - and YES it does give me the Tom Tits. Anyway - just some ideas - I'm sure I'm not the only one having issues and am not sure how to start the FIX process even being a tech for over 30 years. Sometimes time is never on my side. All the Best - regards John Sydney Australia
Hey John! Thanks for the ideas. I'm not sure if you've seen any of the other videos on my channel, but those are all quite technical in nature. I had just started doing this "5 minute fRYEday" thing every once in a while where I tried to talk a little bit about rye, and then tried to keep the technical content under 5 minutes - but still valuable. I failed more often than not to make the time limit, plus it seemed as though not everyone appreciated the rye discussion. So I thought I'd separate the two, and just do the rye portion as a podcast/discussion style video on odd weeks, and on even weeks, release my regular technical content, complete with code, etc. What kind of contact sensors are you using? I use Aqara Zigbee contact sensors, and they are awesome. Honestly, I've not had to replace the battery in a single one of them since I've started using them. Come to think about it, the only Zigbee devices I've had to replace the batteries in are some of my temp/humidity sensors, and a motion sensor I have. I do have some video ideas around those, but unfortunately I've not yet deployed them all in my house just yet, so that's something I need to work on in order to make a video about them. As for troubleshooting HA... That's a deep, dark rabbit hole, and everyone's issues will be unique - which makes for challenging video content. Not to mention that unless I've having the exact same issues, showing how to solve them wouldn't really be possible. :( However, I went through a similar issue with mine a few years back. I had a Home Assistant Blue (Raspberry Pi, basically), and I outgrew it. Too many automations, complicated dashboard, etc. It got to the point where I had to reboot it daily as well. My solution was to migrate to an Intel NUC running baremetal HAOS, and I've not had a single problem since then. Everything has been spectacular! That said, though, that does give me some ideas for future fRYEday topics, though - so be sure to stay tuned. I'm thinking something along the lines of "what I value in a smart home solution" and "my method of troubleshooting/fixing issues with my smart house". More of like a 10,000 foot view, though - not all deep down in the weeds. But rest assured, we all have issues. Unfortunately, sometimes the answer is to stop using whatever the really problematic thing is - like the Mail and Packages integration. MAN, did I love that thing! But it was broken more often than it worked, and I got sick and tired of the unreliable nature of it, so I binned it. Oh well. Thanks for watching, and I hope you continue to enjoy my videos!
@@fasthowto Thanks for your reply. Yes I have watched as many of your vids as my time permits and DO understand the difficulties of specific troubleshooting. Even a high level overview would be of help to much more than just me - I'm sure. I am a good 6 hours away from home currently working and forget the brand of sensors I'm using - but the price was right (Free), so there's a big issue for a start. I did purchase a couple of SonOff sensors for my 2 garage doors but one seems to go through the 2x AAA batteries in like 2 weeks, the other lasts 3 or 4 times longer, but still painful. I've been watching as many of your vids as possible, you may remember me asking a year ago of more about you doing a vid on VMWare, but you didn't have the software. It's not too difficult to download the Workstation version the with a little search find a licence key to activate it. That's what I do..... maybe... but do run HA on a VM - I do wonder if that could be my issue running on a Dell mini PC with Windows 11 and lots of RAM. On your other favourite note - I too do partake of a nice Bourbon s much as possible, we probably need that after a week of IT troubleshooting regardless of the equipment type we service. Haha It's 7am here, so I better get my act together for the day - I have just 2x hour or less jobs on for today, but about 7 hours of driving on top of that, then Home. I've checked logs but then find I get a bit lost in the quantity of errors and suddenly loose enthusiasm to go deeper for what a reboot would fix. I even contemplated adding a daily reboot script for the whole PC and VMWare - cause I wrote a simple script to autorun and start the VMWare every time the PC start unattended. I gotta run - Thanks again John --> have a great week what's left.
Another interesting Vid - thanks Jeff - all the best John Sydney - Land of OZ
Definitely liking these videos.
Sweet, I'm glad to hear that!!! Thanks for watching!!!
Love my Ryedays!!! Name suggestion - "Home Automation, Refined by Bourbon"
please use chapters if you want to yap about unrelated stuff for 10 minutes before the content
Please feel free to watch a channel that is more to your liking.
I’d gladly take the bond bridge off your hands! I’ve got three fans and a fireplace controller connected to mine, but the range is a bit limited, depending on how I have everything set up. If I have the bond on top of the network rack, it can reach all three fans perfectly but not the fireplace, and if I want to use the fireplace controller I have to move the bond to my plant stand, which makes it flaky with the (mostly unused) guest bedroom and office fans. If I had two, I could have a dedicated bridge for that side of the house, problem solved! 😂 Also, I’d say there’s an exception to your hardware store devices rule- Lutron Caseta is available at my Lowe’s, and has been rock solid reliable!
Well, the rule was "don't buy crap", not "don't shop at big box". I also said that anything at a big box is "likely gonna be crap". After being in consulting for the better part of 2 decades , I've learned not to speak in absolutes. :) I must admit to having never tried Caseta. At $60 each, and with over 60 switches in my house (and still going up), I'd be bankrupt. LOL That's a great reason for wanting a second Bond Bridge, thank you for sharing, and thanks for watching! :)
I’d use it to connect my dumb fans!
How dumb are they? They are remote controlled at least, right?
@ apologies, yes they have remotes lol. But dumb enough that I can’t automate them!
Great video! Thanks! Where can I find your cool t-shirt?
Thank you! There's a link in the description. Thanks for watching!
@@fasthowto Thanks, I missed that.
How about this for a channel: "Smart Home on the Quick". :)
Shelly 2.5: IIRC you have to reconfigure the CoIoT setting from broadcast to directly address home assistant. Had the same issues with all of the Gen1 shellies.
Yep, I did that. Mentioned it in the video as well. Some additional googling last night revealed a wireless roaming setting that some people recommended be changed, so I tried that. Here's hoping...
@fasthowto oh, must have missed that part :) Yes there is a setting for roaming signal strentgh threshold or something. I have a bunch of Gen1 Shelly1 in my house, but they are very stable. They may choose between 2 UniFi APs. Also you could consider that the Gen1 Shellies are 2.4GHz only. Maybe you have some weird interference or channel changing going on? The newer plus models support 5GHz iirc. They also run rock solid for me, in total I scattered about 50 Shellies in my house (window shutters, light switches, outlets)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this issue is something specific to my environment, just have t nailed down exactly what it is yet. I'm also ubiquiti, and I have a separate 2.4ghz ssid just for smart home stuff like these. I've got half a dozen APs, and these two Shellys are the only wifi devices I have a problem with. I'll see how the 1PMs behave, and if they're better, I'll just replace the 2.5s. I don't need the multiple channels anyway (my mistake...)
