Sheer musical genius and political commentary and satire
Excellent performance.
Can't say he didn't tell everyone the entire truth from start to finish.
What's so worrying is that all these years later his brilliant songs are as topical as they were when he wrote them.
Watching this in 2024, the thing that struck me was that every single male in the audience was wearing a tie! (Even when I I was required to wear a suit for work I refused to wear such a silly garment!)
A few here that I had never heard before. He's 96.

Got this in my recommended, and goddamn what a guy

Legend. Rhyming Te Deum and ICBM
I was there! Not that particular concert, but the other of the two concerts he held in Copenhagen.
You can just feel how much pressure he’s under during the first few songs, because nobody’s getting the jokes, but after “We will all go together”, he gets much snappier, and eases up, because people got the joke of that song!
You can see him panic as he adjusts the microphone
He did look a bit nervous. I think an interviewer brought it this performance up and Lehrer commented he looked a bit nervous in that performance.
As great as this is, I can kind of tell that Mr. Lehrer has always been telling the truth about how he didn't really enjoy being a professional entertainer. He clearly enjoys entertaining people, but he always looks a lot more modest and embarrassed any time he's not front-and-center. Not everyone has the temperament to do this for more than just fun, and I'm happy for him that he had the self-confidence to retire from it when he did.
My parents went on dates at the coffee shop where Tom Lehrer performed. Dad bought all his albums, and I stole them when I left for college and memorized them. Sang them around camp fires. 68 years old and the old friends who sang them with me are gone, but I’ve still got the records. I’ve got his autograph on my first business card.
One of the few people I wish I'd met. Thank you Tom Lehrer , a masterpiece of mischievious lyrics. I have just introduced another person to this genre..? So carry it on folks, we can't let the wonderful lyrics of Tom Lehrer fade into history !
It occurred to me as he was walking in, comparing him to the standing men surrounding him and his escort, he's taller by a little bit. Either they're short or this man is taller than average.

Brilliant! This is a great concert.
I forgot what a good player he is, and his delivery is spot on. And the songs... Brilliant! How did he get away with these lyrics? He poked fun at the boundaries of acceptability on every front. And by today's standards (really ever since the 60s) his words often cross that line with tongue firmly in cheek. How did he get away with it?
My parents introduced me to Tom Lehrer songs in about 1968 in Denmark (we all spoke English, and my mother was English). By the age of 12 I knew all the lyrics to his songs and could sing along. Tom was superb.
I discovered Tom Lehrer when I was about 8yo. No wonder I turned out this way.
At UC Santa Cruz in 1984 he held auditions for his musical comedy class. My friend and I went to watch as a lark, and it was one of the most enjoyable evenings I ever spent. Lehrer played piano accompaniment, and you'd have no idea he was this former star. He just the students do their thing, and honestly there wasn't a one who wasn't a talent, most of them very funny. Shame they couldn't all get in the class. Side note: my roommate, awkward and almost pathologically shy--unknown to me--auditioned, was fantastic, and made it in. I had had no idea he had talent. Great evening. 😁
I wondered if those auditions were a fun form of formality of enrolment or if he was genuinely being discriminate to those who lack talent. How were the auditions done? Did they have to do something specific like sing or do candidates choose their own acts and can do things like juggling three balls, or perform stand up comedy?
Good comedy, great music, and suave dressing; this video is my introduction to Tom Leher, and I love him!
LPs of him are my treasured possessions and I still play them. Have one of his songs as my phone ring tone. Brilliant man with a superb sense of humour.
Playlist for myself: 5:05 7:30 We'll all go together when we go 11:00 Pollution 13:00 When You Are Old and Grey 16:00 I hold your hand in mine
He left out the verse...... "She set her Sister's hair on fire, sing rikkity tikkity tin....She set her Sister's hair on fire, and as the flames grew higher and higher, she danced around the funeral pyre, playing a violin, o'lin, playing a violin."
“we will all fry together when we fry” -this man
Look at these people half of them are silently crying
King of Dark humor
tom lehrer and will wood both fall into a thin category i cant name for the life of me
The biggest shame is, now in 2024, this song has become prophesy due to our out of control political dimwits
Tom was such a talent. Brings tears of laughter in 2024
49:50 "If your sins original" is ironic
Happy 96th birthday to Mr. Tom Lehrer on April 9th.
DR certainly didn’t have the best archiving policy at the time… I’m glad they found the courage to keep this recording :)
26:33 No one show this man Rule 34
I just fully discovered him today and now i learn its on his birthday? World works crazy sometimes. This man is a treasure of his time (and times to come im sure)
Its crazy that he turned 96 today, to think he outlived practically everyone he's he parodied, Happy Birthday Mr. Lehrer!
Happy Birthday Tom lehrer.
Happy Birthday Tom lehrer.
Here's to him outliving that ghoul Kissinger!
@@Crowbornoh he already did that. Did you miss that the news? Kissinger died like 6 months ago.
12:28 So, if any of you feel like joining in on this song, I would appreciate it if you’d get out.
Dang..... Lets just say I USED to like hunting..... But that song was a bit too close to home. Update: based on the horror stories.... He never did specify what kind of cow 😅😅😅
He specified that it was a pure bred guernsey cow.
why do they clap like that? its hilarious!
I’m telling my kids this was Jesus
Decades later and some of his songs still sound subversive.
His voice is so soothing i can fall asleep to this
I love 27:10 -- that look during Smut!
Fell in love with a man 70 years older than me 😭 needs a time machine
The big bang theory had the elements sung by Jim Parsons as Sheldon.
I was brought up on his brilliance in the 1960s. Amazes me. . . I remember 90% of the words in 2024
This man was ahead of his time
He was brilliant, talented AND handsome! Wow.
I;m old now, and even my kids are old, but I remember singing these songs with them. We loved him, and I'm glad to be able to see him on UA-cam now.
