Stumbled upon your video 5 years later bc I find myself in a similar situation at 23. Fresh off of a 3 month break up and living at home, luckily enough to have a job tho. Struggling to find meaning/purpose, and I think moving out will give me that purpose but who knows. Has life improved after this video? Do things really get better w/ time?

Late for commenting but I found this video to be a little misleading. What she is describing is more set decorator than production designer. If she was talking only about set decorators, then I get it, but she’s not saying much about her experience as a Production Designer. On low budget films and small projects, PD are often conflated with art directors and they basically wear a lot of hats in art department and it seems that is her experience however it’s not always like that, especially on bigger budget union productions. PD collaborates with the director and cinematographer and usually work with an art director and set decorator to create the look of the film. They’ve got to do lots of research, understand the characters pov, determine emotional tone of a film, create sketches and mood boards, figure out a color story, work with location and costumes, sometimes draft plans for sets if they have to build on a sound stage, and all of this work has to serve the vision of the director. PD is a lot more than just picking cool stuff from the hand prop room and dressing a set. Tons of PDs out there have a background in architecture and art history but that’s not a requirement to start working towards a career in the art department. If you want to get into art department, find work as a production assistant on sets.

Just watching your older videos (I wish you were still on UA-cam), you’re so good, your short film is so remarkable, I truly love your film from high school. My son is currently in high school and wants to go to film school, and that’s how I stumbled upon your reviews for NYFA & NYU summer programs. I will make sure to show my son your short film as soon as he gets in from high school today!! (as well as the one in the link). You’re so talented, I know you will/have gone far in the film industry.

Personally I just do not see a lot of movement within your career if you are fine being an assistant to the producers that's fine but if you want to move up in the chain of command I would suggest to start looking at made for TV movies because they can help you rise and get better pay working 2nd unit that would be my recommendation to work you way up and get better pay

If you think people don't have to do the summer programs, how do you suggest people learn on their own and meet people who are serious about film? I think buying ones own equipment (or can you rent it???) would be just as expensive as actually going into a structured environment where you can meet others interested in the field and learnnto use the equipment

You and I are the same I was also wanted to become a director and producer and writers from a foreign country there are three countries I want to do in my dramas and movies first I want to start with Thailand Thailand is a way of positivity and it has a lot of people's rights and of course it's really funny second I want to go to South Korea did you a film editing and a movie over there between the love at first sight for someone you care second I want to go to Taiwan Taiwan speaks Chinese but there's more to it in Taiwan so you and me are the same there's so many questions I want to ask you I want to do my films in a foreign country but how do I do it
