Grindsbrook Clough, Brown Knoll and Rushup Edge Walk
Not a circular walk today, though could be made into one but would add a fair bit of additional mileage.
Started in Edale and took the tough but lovely scramble up Grindsbrook Clough. Walked along to Crowden Edge and followed path to Noe Stool. From there I took the path to Kinder Low Trig and then on to Edale rocks where I took a short break. I then went across Brown Knoll and on to Rushup Edge. Finished at the car park near Mam Tor where my husband picked me up.
It's a great walk and scenic, really enjoyed it. The weather was great too.

A short early morning walk from the caravan site we were staying at in Simonstone while on holiday. It was only 2.5 miles but nearly all fields, footpaths or tracks with some lovely views. Interesting to see the piles of stones built next to the footpath from the remains of whatever was mined there in the past. I walked this route twice and, to be honest, I have included photos and videos from ...
Tissington, Dovedale, Alstonefield and Milldale Walk

Circular walk starting from Tissington and heading to Dovedale. Along the River Dove for a while then up Hall Dale, followed by a drop down to Dale Bottom then a climb up to Alstonefield. Had a short break there and a picnic lunch, then I headed down to Milldale. From Milldale there is a long, long climb uphill. I then had to walk through a field of young cattle, which always worries me, and al...

20th May 2023. Steep climb to start but great to get lovely views after yesterday's thick cloud and zero visibility. Long flat walk over the moors to Blakey Ridge but lots of Curlews, Grouse and Lapwings to keep me entertained. More moors to follow, and a visit to Fat Betty, but easy, pleasant walking and some scenic views. Had a quick visit to the stepping stones at Egton Bridge as I was passi...

18th May 2023. Unfortunately I did not get good weather for this section. It started to rain soon after I began walking and although I got a few views early on, the cloud became thicker and thicker as the day went on and it was quite wet at times. Such a shame really as I walked this section last year when I did the Cleveland Way and the views were so beautiful. The only consolation is that I k...

18th May 2023. Flat walking today but a lot of it on roads which is tough on the feet. Unfortunately the church was locked at Bolton-on-Swale which is a shame as I would have liked to have had a look inside. Crossed quite a few fields full of cows which I'm always wary of, though none actually took any notice of me. Today's walk took me along several sludgy footpaths that were becoming overgrow...

17th May 2023. Quite easy going today, just two climbs but nothing difficult. Met a very friendly sheep in the field leading to the Nun's Steps in Steps Wood, I think she thought I was going to feed her. The church was open at Marske so I looked inside and bought some chocolate from the tuck shop there. After Marske there are quite a few flat fields for a little while, followed the second climb...

16th May 2023. Took the high route passing the old smelt mills which was quite interesting. There is quite a stiff climb up after Blakethwaite Smelt Mill on a zig-zag path, and it was very windy at this particular spot when I was going up too which didn't help. There was an area after that where I was a little unsure of the route as there was not a path where my OS map was trying to send me. Ho...

15th May 2023. After the first mile or so from Kirkby Stephen, there is a long climb all the way up to Nine Standards Rigg. Then, a steady descent down, followed by reasonably flat walking. Jean, we love your videos! My husband and I were so inspired by your Coast to Coast journey: we then did it!! We finished about a month ago, what a fabulous adventure! At some point I'll have the energy/time to upload our videos. Thanks for inspiration/tips, and you'll be amused that I wore a handy vest just like yours, lol! 🌻🦋🦋🦋

I found it ok to be honest. Although I covered some mileage, there were no long or difficult ascents or descents. The worse bit was the long, long moor after High Paradise Farm, as it seemed to go on for ages. My feet were aching a bit at the end of the day, but soon recovered. Have you walked the Cleveland Way, or are you planning to?

I had no problems doing it in 7 days and I was 69 at the time. I walked regularly every day prior to doing it, and once a week I would walk 20 miles locally with a fully loaded backpack to prepare myself. (Very flat where I live though, but it prepared me for the distance). I took a few breaks on route too, taking photos and videos and simply just enjoying the views. I also took plenty of snacks to keep my energy levels up. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I'm sure you will too. Good luck on your walk. please let me know how you get on.

Jean, my husband and I are enjoying your videos so much, finding them so inspiring! We've booked our plans for the Coast to Coast in May this year, very excited! Thank you for your kind comment. I chose to wear boots and also gaiters, and for me that was great as I managed to keep my feet dry, even over the boggy areas. As you will be aware, I was sleeping in a caravan each night so only needed a day pack, which contained lightweight waterproof jacket and trousers, basic first aid kit with blister plasters, (that I didn't need as I wore liner socks under my walking socks). Food and water of course and some loose change as there are several honesty boxes along the route. Sun cream, sunglasses, spare socks and a microfibre towel just in case my feet got wet though didn't need them. I found walking poles very useful too. I took a map but never needed it as I had the route downloaded on my phone. Be aware that the route is not signposted very well in many places, especially in the Lakes. Hope this helps you. It's a great walk and I met some lovely people on route. If you enjoy it half as much as I did, you will love it.

I’m thoroughly enjoying your series. My husband and I 1st booked the C2C to walk in June 2020 and, with the pandemic, postponed to September 2021. As we are Canadian and not fully vaxed then we regretfully had to cancel. We have now re-booked for September 2024. 4 years older and now in our late 60’s. We have no illusions that it will be easy but your videos have given me both inspiration and encouragement. We will be taking it a bit slower than you, having booked it for 18 days. Now to get back to your day 3!

Age is just a number, I am 70 and to be honest I was not 100% sure I would complete it but actually managed ok. Yes it was tough, especially in the Lake District, but once I'd got through there, my confidence grew and I became sure I could do it. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk and met some lovely people along the way. Hope all goes well for you next year, and that you enjoy the walk as much as I did.

It was a shame it was so cloudy but at least I knew how it should have looked from doing the Cleveland Way on a beautiful clear day last year. I loved this section though, despite the bad weather I had.

Hopefully, now the route has been officially adopted, they put a safe crossing for the A19?

I guess they will. It took me a while as you probably saw from my video, but made it safely. I think this bit worries some people.

I think we went the blue route - what I remember most is disappearing up to my thigh in a bog after the NSR. It later started to rain heavily as we reached Ravenscar - I was happy that at least it washed the peat off my leg!! lol. By the time we'd reached the road to Keld, the weather was bright and clear again and a couple from our party decided to swim in the river. Halfway there now.

I was lucky as it wasn't really too boggy, though I did find the route down difficult to follow.

Compared to the distance done the previous days, the idea of 20+ miles was rather daunting - but with rolling hills and soft paths the miles flew in - but we so pleased to see our pick up bus at the end.

High Raise - the highest point on your walk - a little higher the Kidsty Pike. We went that way, down to the end of the ridge - a better walk than the path by Haweswater. That's the Lakes done - tick. Those pictures at Angler's Tarn are exquisite.

Thank you Richard, Angle Tarn is very beautiful. I found the High Raise route easy to do. I've never been on the other route, but I've heard it is more difficult.

The heavens opened as we reached the bottom of the waterfall on Grasmere side and didn't stop again till we got to the valley bottom on the other side (we got some shelter at Ruththwaite for lunch but still ate in the rain). Like you, the cloud was too low to allow us to walk St Sunday Crag. By the time we reached the Patterdale Hotel is was hot and sunny so we all stretched out waterproofs out on the picknick benches and enjoyed a little beverage, or two. Still really enjoying the videos.

Another good video - less memories in this one as we stayed high on the ridge after Lining Crag, passing the Lion and the Lamb, before descending down a very steep slope to Grasmere. Roll on Day 4

Hope you enjoy the videos Richard. It's such a great walk - I loved it, though I did find it tough in some places, especially the Lakes. You are so lucky to live close to St Bees and have all those mountains close by. Where I live it's flat agricultural land and I have to travel a couple of hours to get to the nearest hills!
