SHOULD I HIKE: BENEFITS AND HOW IT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Such a fun time! Was great to hang out with you at Pinhoti Fest!
Omg I love the "Don't offer unsolicited advice" one. Sooo many times I've been challenged by some smarmy self appointed trail warden about a choice of gear or whatever.... It's like dude ... I've been 4 season Hiking in the White Mountains for 25 yrs. I've done all the 48 4,000 footers, many in Winter. most of New Englands hundred highest as well as most of the Catskill 35ers, and a handful of 13,000 and 14,000 footers in Colorado. If I want to wear a 3 season boot with an extra pair of socks for a 3 mile hike, instead of a 4 season boot.. or whatever... It's on me. Or just because I wore a cotton shirt on a day when I knew I wasn't going to sweat... So what!?
Totally agree, some people feel like whatever they use is the best, and everyone else should be using it lol. Thanks for watching!
This is awesome. They should show your video during the orientation they give to hikers at Amicalola. Perhaps you could make it available to the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club or the ATC. Sarah Baker is the ATC manager for Georgia.
@ChristopherMarshburn That would be awesome. Feel free to pass it on to them. I will try if I get a chance. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
well done. thanks for posting
@@andyboyes6408 Thanks for watching!
All good reminders.... I like to think of myself as a ghost hiker. I want people not even sure I was there 😎 Like MIB...but hiking🤫
Sorry to hear. Wish y'all both the best.
had a great time- looking forward to next year!
Same here! Thanks for watching! Hope you will subscribe for more :)
Wow! Super video! This had to take FOREVER to compile! Kudos and much respect for your time and effort!
@atgirl Thank you so much! It was definitely a labor of love, so glad that you liked it! Thanks for watching 😀
Great video, Todd. It was awesome to get to meet you guys and hopefully we can hike together soon.
Was great to finally meet you too. Lets get on the PMT ASAP! :)
Well done! I hate that I had to miss it. 🦑

Thank you my brother! My place wasn't affected but my neighboring counties are in so much need
@JoeyOutdoorz Like someone commented to me, make sure people know that they will not filter out chemicals or viruses. Thanks for your help in getting these where they need to go.
Is this bag considered "backpackable" ?
At 2lbs 8oz for the regular and 2lbs 12oz for the long it is totally good for backpacking. A little on the heavy side compared to the newer "ultralight" offerings, but you get what you pay for. I loved the bag myself. I have since moved on to using quilts for the most part though as to save as much weight as possible with my load outs. Thanks for watching, if you have any other questions feel free to ask!
Light and compact with an excellent R-Value. I'll be curious to hear how it holds up over time. Looks awesome so far!!!
Yea, I will be testing it this winter for sure, and will be doing an update! Thanks for watching!
Got this earlier this year.. and love it. Primarily for the wide regular fit. My old mummy style doesn't do it for me any more. I really don't care for the pump sack, very bad design by Nemo. Otherwise a great product for me so far! Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching! I sold no Thermarest NXT mummy to get this. Much more comfortable so far, and a bit warmer I am sure.
I have this and the old "Insulated" version, both regular wide, and OMG they are awesome. I haven't been able to backpack with the Extreme yet, but we have done some tent camping with it and been really happy, especially after using the Xlite for so long before that. You can definitely feel that radiant warmth under you.
For sure on the feeling the warmth thing! I only buy regular wide versions of whatever pads I buy. Looking forward to finding some cold weather to test it out with this winter! Thanks for watching, hope you and yours are doing well <3
Divorce is always tough. I hope you both find peace moving forward ❤🩹
We have, thanks for commenting. Hope to get to hike together someday! :)
Nice review. Definitely a great winter pad. 👍
For sure..thanks for watching. Are you going to pinhoti fest?
@@Backpacksandtrails I am! 👍
I did this about 7 years ago. Brings back good memories. Love those mountain views
@@BackpackingWithJason It was a fun hike, beautiful for sure. Thanks for watching!
Great video, Todd. Isn't Melanie a blast to hike with? She is a hoot. See you at Pinhoti Fest.
Thanks for watching! Melanie definitely brings a lot of energy! Looking forward to seeing you at Pinhoti Fest!
Much different hiking than Florida. That looked like a good hike..not a typical walk in the park. Well done mates 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Hump Mtn is no joke! I think that was one of the harder climbs. One of my favorite sections so far though.
@Schwaptastic612 Thanks for watching! It was a beautiful hike, tough at times but worth all of it. It's one of my favorite sections as well.
One of my favorite areas to hike and not that far from me either. Did an overnighter on Grassy Ridge Bald last year. Nice video!
@JimHayesHiking Someday, we need to get together for a hike. I will be back up around that area again sometime this fall. Stay in touch, Jim, and thanks for watching
@@Backpacksandtrails I would like that very much.
This is an inspiration, for older guys like me as well. I hope you are still going strong.
Obviously, this all must have been (and is) difficult. Sending both of you good vibes. It's great to see you back here. Enjoy the get together.
@@DCOutdoors Thanks so much for your support 🙂
Looks good! I'll be at the Pinhoti Fest. See Ya There! 👍
Awesome can't wait to finally meet! :)
I hope we can get out hiking or paddling soon.
For sure, stay in touch!
Classy chat bud. Best wishes to you!
Much appreciated! Hope you are doing well and that we can finally get a chance to hike together over the next year! You have my number!
You did this hike the hardest way! It's easier to go counterclockwise, starting on the Art Loeb - most of the climbing will be downhill. Also, when you start in the morning, you have more energy for all the ups and downs and the views along this route are amazing. At Ivestor Gap, you should have continued right onto Art Loeb, bypassing the summit trail to Grassy Cove Top (which is closed now anyway - probably due to all the erosion). The views on top aren't really worth that climb. The mistake I made was when I got to Shining Rock Gap, I got confused and instead of getting on the Old Butt Knob trail to the cliffs, I continued straight on Art Loeb. I still got to see the white quartz, but only the rockfall at the bottom of the cliffs, not the cliffs themselves. when I got back to Shining Rock gap, I turned right and then left onto Ivestor Gap trail, which is almost as scenic as Art Loeb and a heck of a lot easier for my tired body at the end of the day. Despite missing the quartz cliffs, I'd still rank this as one of my favorite hikes, and really not that difficult if you do it counterclockwise. It looks like what you did was go down Old Butt Knob down to the Shining Creek trail that comes up the eastern flank of the range, and both trails (especially Old Butt Knob) are notoriously difficult. You wouldn't have had to deal with those trails at all (except the short part to get to Shining Rock cliffs) if you had taken Art Loeb back to the parking lot. But the scenery around the creek and the views up to the ridge were stunning, so not a total loss! If doing the hike this way was your intention, my apologies.
Thank you for your comment and insights on the trail. We did do it the way we did on purpose, but I would not do it that way again for sure... Sometime in the near future I will be back out there exploring different routes. Probably either a 1 or 2 night route. Thanks for watching and subscribing! New changes and new videos coming soon!
Great video, thanks a lot.
@@the_hawk777 your very welcome!
Really like this bag. Sleeps like quilt with option for LW but zippers closed for easy access in the middle of the night. I sleep cold and this is great draft free sleep system. Even better would be an 850 down option PLEASE BA.
Agreed. Would love to see a higher down option
Check out other you tube videos, OMHC you tube video did shining rock last year and showed the washout. Old Man Hiking Club has guys all over 60
This video was taken shortly after the hurricane tore through this area. Since then there has been a tremendous amount of young growth of understory species. I just finished hiking this (May, 2024) and it would have been great except for the incessant deer flies and the overwhelming number of ticks.
Yea, it had been a little while since the hurricane when we hiked it. Wish I could have seen it before that, I heard is was much shadier and pretty. Thanks for your comment, and thanks for watching! New content and lots of changes coming soon!
I did camel at farles lake but I spilled some water at my campsite about a mile past the lake. Hiked to juniper on a litre of water😜 lesson learned
Oh geez....live and learn lol. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for some changes and new videos coming soon!
Planning on taking the same exact route. Do you think this could be completed as a day hike if we embark at 8am?
You would have to be moving awful fast. It gets pretty treacherous in parts. I would not personally want to try it, but I am sure it is doable by some... Thanks for watching!
New to the channel. Just bought the oatmeal & veggie stew ,came home and looked this up and hear I am. Awesome video, straight to the point. I like the idea of not wasting my water. Wonder if you Add a snack to it or do you need two? Cost was 9.00 each
Hey there! Thanks for checking out the video. Adding a snack is totally up to you, but it never hurts to have extra goodies on the side, right? Enjoy your meal! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
They need red lights
That was beautiful! At around 17 minutes the ferns were incredible. Wish you had shot more of them. I hadn't ever seen the orange red lizard or the millipede with the yellow edges/legs. I am a 5th generation Atlantan and 10th generation Georgian, but only hiked around Cartacay Ga. Funny that my ex-husband is named Woody, and I didn't know there was a Woody Gap. God bless ya'll.
Thanks for watching! 😀
Why didn't you go around grassy cove top ?
This was not near Grassy Cove Top. We did however go over Grassy Cove Top the day before and it was not closed at that time.
@@Backpacksandtrails it sure looked like you went over grassy cove top when you went out I left your Gap and got to shining Rock camp. It's been closed for years. Otherwise art lobe up to shining Rock camp is only a 300 FT elevation
@tallyrc I'm sorry, yes, I thought this was a different video, lol. We wanted to go over grassy cove top. It was a lot of fun 😁
Can I charge my tablet witch 10000?
I would assume so....
I was there a few weeks ago. They have removed one of the landings of the tower. Its shorter but wider steps...still a good view. The trails on the other side are good too... there are some spots that hold water after heavy rains. The other trails are also multi use....look out for bikes.
Thank you for this. Recently I did the regular trail and opted out of the challenge trail. It was 1 day after torrential downpours. Seems like the challenge is very doable in our future.
You can do it! Thanks for watching and glad you liked it :)
The Florida " mountains ": the climb from about 6:00 to 9 minutes into the video. Topography and terrain reminds of the rolling terrain that is the Appalachian foothills. Moreover, to some extent, parts of Torreya S Park, and also nearby Blackwater River State Park in the panhandle, are similar at a smaller scale to Providence Canyon park in SW Georgia.
Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed the video. My son and I are doing Alexander Springs to Hopkins Prairie in mid March. Lots of good information.
Great place to hike and camp. Just wanted to let you know the hard part of the hike you made straight up Ivestor Mtn. is the old Art Leob trail. That part was supposed to be closed years ago because of erosion. The new trail goes around the back side of the mountain and is much easier. You are right about the trails not being maintained. It seems the forest service is content letting the trails go back to all wilderness. Happy trails.
We are so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching, and Happy New Year!
Grassy cove top is closed. Not sure why they didn't take art loeb or investor around..
My first real backpacking trip was the Art Leob…. starting at the boyscout compound. A pack that was a rookie attempt at being lightweight (35lbs) and sweltering July heat made for a suffer-fest I still remember. A great time that brings back great memories. Nothing beat climbing up onto the granite boulders overlooking the valleys, and nothing was worse than 10” wide trails overgrown with rhododendron lol
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's amazing how backpacking trips can create lasting memories. Thanks for watching!
Take care
