Custom Sight Tape Testing
Переглядів 6013 місяці тому
I built a custom sight tape using Precision Cut Archery and myLabRadar, then competed in a 3D Archery competition to put the tape to the test. Long story short, it works. #archery #3d #sport #competition #athlete #aim #custom #abt
Building a Custom Sight Tape

I am going through my process of building a custom sight tape. I find the tapes that come with most bow sights to be inaccurate, and most of them end at 100 yards. I am using Precision Cut Archery, which I believe is the most accurate solution for custom tapes. www.precisioncutarchery.com This video is not sponsored and I have no affiliation with the company. Arrow Build: 2024 Vane Selection
Переглядів 45711 місяців тому
I go into detail on my precess for testing and selecting my 2024 hunting vane. I use the same process when testing and building my competition arrows. In the end I don't believe there is such a thing as 'one size fits all'. You have to test and find what works for your setup. #archery #sport #athlete #outdoor #test #abt #firstvideo
I still blame Biden 😂
Some awesome shooting. I shot 80lb bows until I was 42 years old. 60-80 pound bows were very common back then. At 68 years old I’m shooting 60lbs. Can not shoot near as good asI could years ago. My average keeps going down a little every but I still enjoy the sport as much as I did in my youth. You should be very proud of yourself. You are very accomplished for 4 years of shooting.
@@olehemlock I appreciate the compliment. My next bow will probably be 70lbs. There's no rational reason for me to shoot 80...
Where was this shoot at? Looked like a fun one!
@@onehuntersjourney it was at Redwood Bowmen in Oakland
Do you take animals at 100 yds? Or do you practice that threshold to be comfortable with something at like, 60-80 yards in the field?
I'll practice to 150yds (that's the max distance to where I have vane clearance). My max distance for hunting depends on how I feel and the shooting conditions. Some days I lack confidence at 40, some days 100 feels great. I believe the key is to know yourself well enough, then only take shots you have absolute confidence in. For some people 120 is an ethical shot, for some 30 is questionable. I realize that is a bit of a non-answer, but I think we need to define ethical based on each person's ability. That said, I usually stay within 80, unless it is a follow up shot. However, I don't think 100+ is unethical if you're good enough.
No way that's a hunting setup🧐🤔
@@chadknapp5170 it's what I hunt with. What's your issue with it?
@SeaSaltMud that's crazy to me, but to each their own. The quiver setup is wild lol no issue, I was asking a question, thinking maybe you used it for comp shooting or something. If you kill game with it, it works for you and that's all that matters🤙 do you mind if I ask why you set your quiver like that?
@ it's called a quivalizer made by Option Archery, although I modified mine. Over all it cuts a few ounces off of the total weight, and it's acts as a long stabilizer. In the wind it does blow around a bit more though.
@@SeaSaltMud first time I've ever seen or heard of it. I apologize for coming across kinda standoffish, that wasn't my intent. Thanks for the responses and the info, you got a new follower. Happy hunting to ya, looking forward to more of your content🤘
@@chadknapp5170 no worries. Reach out if you ever have any questions, it might give me some ideas for content. I look forward to future interactions.
You prefer this or the Alpha X 33? Thanks
@@htq582a if you already own the Alpha X, the ax2 is and upgrade, how big of an upgrade depends on your drawlength. If you don't already own one and you're trying to decide between the 2 I'd go with the ax2 100%. Personally, I already own the alpha x33 and I'm keeping it.
Why is your quiver like that and your stabilizer so thick
@@BABFishing-p2o it is a modified Quivalizer from Option Archery, and the back bar is a Cache Bar, also from Option Archery
Yay! Another video!
Absolutely planed😂 LMAO. You shoot that set up extremely well. I’m impressed. If you mentioned it I didn’t catch it. Were you shooting the draw stop in the extremely hard setting or hard setting? Also what let off were you using?
@@olehemlock it was 85% letoff. I didn't check the draw stop, but I assume it was extreme hard. That's usually how they ship. My personal bow I shoot 80% letoff extremely hard. I didn't want to change anything on the bow, since it belongs to the shop. I took it off the wall and shot it. The only thing I move was the sight and the peep. I am very impressed by the bow.
@ I’m left handed. Due to Hoyts Tec riser it is impossible for me to shoot one before I buy one. So I really rely on videos to make decisions. The way you shot the x2 is pretty much how i shoot my bows. I was really impressed how stable the bow is after the shot but I realize it also has a lot to do with your excellent form. I’m pretty sure I’m going to order one.
Great video and review. So for a 30inch draw would you strongly recomend ax2 over alpha x then? Where are you from btw? You sound south african but Im not 100% sure
@@edcunningham5562 yes, I'd go with the ax 2 at 30". You'll notice a significant performance gain. It will be faster, but speed is not everything. It will just feel better overall. I am originally from South Africa. I've been in the US for about 12 years. Good catch.
@@SeaSaltMud Are you mainly talking about how it holds in regards to feeling better overall? Nice, two great places to bow hunt! Are you left eye dominant btw? I notice you squint your left eye when shooting
@@edcunningham5562 when I talk about how it holds I am referring to how still the pin float is. The bow holds relatively still, even without stabilizers. I am left handed, but I taught myself how to shoot right handed. The lefty options are usually just to limited.
@@SeaSaltMud I thought they make nearly all bows in left handed configuration though? Im left eyed right handed but shoot righty, I started off shooting lefty but my right shoulder is much more stable so swapped. So I also quint left eye
@@edcunningham5562 they do, but few people stock them. And when you want to upgrade they're hard to sell.
Do you command the break at all or just pull until it breaks from skin friction?
@@timbow50 I do a bit of a hybrid method. I slowly squeeze with my thumb while still actively pulling through the shot. That said, I spend about 25% of my practice working on command shooting/punshing, so that I can utilize it in the wind if needed. I'm very fortunate that I've never dealt with TP.
@ was wondering because you shoot so well. I know what you mean when talking about the dang wind. I like the pull straight back style better as it’s easier for me to just keep my mind and vision focused down range on whatever. The pull is like an unconscious act in that I don’t have to think about squeezing my hand ? or moving some part of my hand. I shoot a lot of 3-d comp compared to like indoor dots because I bow hunt something year around ( wild pigs especially) and my technique just seems to give me the control I want. I try so hard to not do any kind of command shots? the wind makes it a requirement. 👍👍👀👀👀👀
@ I also swith between a thumb button and hinge release often. If I feel my timing with the thumb button is off I'll shoot a couple hundred arrows with the hinge as sort of a form reset.
Great video
Thank you.
Good to see back . Was wondering what/ where you have been? Enjoyed this video.👍👍
@@timbow50 I learned a lot making this. The next time I film a competition it will be a lot better.

@@ericmueller1987 good plan. I'll do that next time :)
Very cool
An angle of where the arrow lands would be good. Also, one of those fluffy things on the microphone would be an added bonus!!
Probably the most detailed hunting sight tape build on UA-cam I’ve ever watched. Excellent for hunting class equipment competition for sure. I used to build tapes with an old app but nowadays on my hunting setup I use CBE metal tapes which are fine for taking game. For me it’s easier and quicker to simply adjust my draw weight slightly and move my peep as needed so everything works together. I like to use 60 yards as max distance for this as it’s a distance I can still get solid feedback on where the pin was at the shot. At 73 years old I’m happy to keep hits inside 4” at 60 yards and naturally smaller at 30 or 40. Good Luck on your future pig hunt. Do a video on your broadhead setup and sighting in. 👍👍
Aussie here and proud and appreciative of your clip . Never mind the negative comment from Steve because your skill and videos present and back up your talent . I’ve added you to my UA-cam watch list and will look forwarded to watching more of your clips .

You are a very good shooter, do not let people put you off, I have only just started archery and every corner I turn there are people trying to stop me because I do not join clubs. I fish too and have the same problem with people and clubs. In the UK we are not allowed to hunt with a bow. I believe that is due to the toffs and greedy land owners wanting to keep all the game animals to themselves. God did not give one man the right have diminion over the earth and all that is on it. Sorry I am ranting now too.
Nice video. What model hoyt are you shooting. You shoot well and in the wind is not easy at 100 yards.
Thank you. It is a Hoyt Alpha X33. I'm planning a rig rundown video soon.
@@SeaSaltMud that is a great bow. I shot it at my pro shop and did a fast review on it.
By the looks of it you need to shorten your draw length. Your left elbow is not in line as it should be.
I have shortened it recently by 1/4 inch. I don't think it is a drawlength issue. Looking back over the video I realize my front should it way too high. It's interesting the form issues I spot reviewing the video that I never realized while just shooting. I'm gonna start using video a lot more as a training aid.

Well done and well said! 👍. Do you just shoot paper or do local 3-d events also?
I shoot my bow every opportunity I get. Target, field, 3d... In California we shoot Safari, it's the same targets as 3d, but scored 11-10-8-5, with the 11 ring being colored orange. The distances typically range from 2 yards to 101 yards. I've never shot 3d like ASA or IBO. I've also never shot unmarked yardage.
New subscriber. You are a nasty archer man. I hope to be where you are in a few years. Just start a year ago. Keep it up.
I'm far from where I want to be, but thank you. The more we practice, the better we get.
Awesome video buddy! If you don't have haters, you're doing something wrong. Keep up the good spirit 👍
I said your shooting is amazing. You need to shoot in a competition at a club and see how you go. Top shooters shoot all day 48 hours a week. For youtube. You can shoot 6 great arrows but shooting them consistently is hard. But again if you can shoot like that any where at anytime you will be one of the top shooters. The issue I have with videos like the one you produced people think it is the norm and what they can expect. But welcome your results in any shoot and I wish you the best. On the weekend I was beaten by a 16 year old girl who had been shooting for less than a year. She trains hard. I shoot every day. It does not mean I wish she did not shoot that well. I welcome her training and congradulate her. Her work and effort is paying off. I hope at the next week Nationals she wins.
Dude he has thrown up really good scores here in California. 3d nationals , state, and club shoots. What’s wrong with people watching a video like these and thinking they can do it? I work in a bow shop and tell everyone every day you can go far as you want to if you put in the work. Pieter is putting in the work and the results are showing. He is the product of growing group of what i believe is an elite group shooters here on the west coast. We shoot Safari & field same format as Redding / NFAA 3d nationals. Out here in the west coast he is one of the top shooters. Besides most of the top shooters out here don’t shoot WA / format or participate USAT ranking events. In the US back in 2019 I estimated it would cost 30,000 to go to every USAT , NFAA National event, and Vegas. Living on the west coast going to IBO and all the ASA would probably be even more. If I could waive a magic wand, and let’s say, I could shoot perfect at every event and win, Vegas being the only exemption, the prize money wouldn’t barely cover the cost of doing it. Without the help of the manufactures most pros wouldn’t do it. So here in Cali we play our own game. The truth is out here in cali we have some awesome shops with great techs and great teachers/ coaches. Lots of people shoot as good as him and he even said it a lot shoot better.
Great job Pieter. It sucks that you had some drama but sometimes drama draws attention. those of us who know you out here in California know that you’re for reals and know what you were trying to do. Keep it up.
Great video, I love it. 👌
Thank you
good job 🤠
Thank you
I enjoyed target shooting with my bow much more than hunting. Especially when shooting at long range. Most people dont realize what muscles in the back and rest of the body are used to draw a bow. I know I didnt until a diving accident that left me a paraplegic.
I enjoy target archery and bow hunting. The more competent I get a target archery, the more confident I feel when hunting. With hunting as a goal it gives my target shooting a little more purpose. Do you still do archery? How did your setup need to change after the accident?
@@SeaSaltMudI completely understand what you mean about it giving you confidence when hunting. My accident was 25 years ago and I'm now a T-8 paraplegic. I lost the ability to hold myself upright in my chair unassisted because my ab muscles didn't work as well anymore. I made myself a harness that held me up. I had to switch to a shorter bow, too, to be able to clear my knees. I was surprised at how much harder it was to draw the bow without the use of the lower back muscles. I haven't had a bow in years now and your video makes me kind of miss it. I rifle hunt and target shoot long range now and that is one hobby that's expensive enough!
I used to be into PRS and ELR, but then the archery bug bit. It surprised me how much crossover there is.
Wow! That’s a lot of testing and shooting. In my experience flight control and vane selection depends on what the arrow is built for. TAC events, unusually longer shots, might need lower profile with a smaller diameter shaft. When the bow and arrow combination are tuned together nearly all vanes will perform better than most people can shoot. Shaft diameter versus vane profile, IMO, is relevant to each other. AAE STEALTH is probably overkill on 4 or 5mm shafts but is great for larger( 19’s, 23’s, 25’s, &27’s) shafts. I’ve found very little difference in 3 or 4 vane out to 60 yards or so. I’ve tried these to 100 yards and the 4 vane consistently hits about 2” lower.
I agree 100%, you have to build the arrow based on the job it needs to do. There is no'one size fits all'. Every setup I tested works well. The differences are very slight, and some are very subjective... The placebo effect is real. There is no substitute for a well tuned setup. The better the tune, the more forgiving things are when human error sets in. In the end choose a setup you have confidence in, then perfect the tune.
