Porsche 996 wrinkled dashboard root cause

Leather covered dash on Porsche 996. Was wrinkled and lifting. Here is the root cause after I removed the dash. The backing material got hard ridges that lifted the leather.

Were you able to determine the brand of the aftermarket IMS? Seems like something to avoid.
Great question. It appears to be an early generation LN engineering retrofit bearing. Obviously no idea on exact bearing mileage. Thanks for watching!
Did you manage to fix this? have the same thing...
@@niklaslofgren2889 I removed the dashboard, cut out all the raised, wrinkled sections of material that was lifting the leather. Then sprayed glue under the leather to re adhere to the dash. Then a year later the leather started lifting where I didn’t get full coverage of glue. Not an easy fix. Also Consider buying a new dash
This currently happened with my 2019 Cayenne and I'm in discussion with Porsche at this time because this is due to no fault of my own and their claiming because I don't have a warranty anymore that I'm responsible to cover the damage which is insane for $100,000 vehicle with only 19000 thousand miles. And by having two Porsches, you would think they would appease a good customer. Even the cheapest of vehicles are not poorly made to this point where the dashboard starts to wrinkle. If you're spending that much money on a vehicle there is no way such a defect should ever exist because obviously that's a manufacturing error in whatever they're using.
Nice video.....wish it was longer. I have to replace the variocam pads on my 01 boxster.....so, thanks for the education
Thanks Brian. Any updates on how the car is running?
Running like a champ. That said I just put the car back on the road so only a few hundred kms. Amazing how much smoother and quieter start ups are now.
What timing lock tools did you use?
Appropriate size bolt to lock the crankshaft pulley. DIY made the cam lock tool. There are some drawings of the tool online. I have access to machining equipment at my work.
I think it ended up being coins caught in the coin trap!
Now that you're done, do you wish you would have lowered the engine and trans and worked on it below?
I researched how much work it was dropping the engine. I think this method is still overall less work. However more awkward body positioning, especially without a lift.
Great video. Can you confirm for me that variocam pads are different than the cam chain guide rail pads? The way your video describes the process is that these are the guide rail pads for each bank, where as, I thought that the variocam was a single set of pads for the adjustment.
The chain guide rail pads are long parts that don’t see the hard wear the small variocam pads do. My long rail pads were barley grooved at 115k miles. The single set of wear pads your thinking of is the IMS chain tensioner pads, which can only be changed if you tear the engine completely down.
@@tuul75 thanks, for whatever reason it's tough to find a diagram of the different pads. I am chasing a deviation issue, my chain guide rail pads, as as well short chain were replaced, but my deviation is still at -5.25 on bank 1. I think my next fix is going to be cam chain tensioners and variocam pads. I don't have CEL, so no immediate issue, but my bank 1 deviation has gone from -4.8 to -5.25 in 1000 miles.
Impressive work
Let’s hope it runs😅
It runs! Nice job!
lol nice video, thx for sharing :)
@gtarbmx its not tuned badly, its not the nitro version. its the brushed electric version. the motor and ESC are not much better than the one in the lunchbox(assuming he doesnt have a MSC in that) and the volcano is a bit heavier.
i have a hopped up lunchbox and i love it. i also have a volcano epx pro(brushless version of the truck in vid) its WAAYY faster. but both trucks are lots of fun. my lunchbox pulls wheelies like crazy. but the volcano is more fun off road and for jumping.
