I could not read till I was 14 due to dyslexia but I was such a big fan of the LOTR films I forced myself to finally read the fellowship back in 2004. the one audio book I would recommend would be the over the actual book is the Martin Shaw version of the Silmarillion.

Reading the books with my daughter and watching each film as we finish the book. (Currently reading Half Blood Prince) and I’m so excited for the series so that the books can be honoured fully.

I prefer the movie over the book, except how they handled Wendy (and mistreated the actress). I thought Kubrick did a better job with the supernatural than King

The movie is a good one but it's a bad adaptation, if it was inspired by instead of based on it would work because the only similarities are the main idea and partly the characters. I hated what the movie did to Dick Hallorann his role was important, there was no character development in the movie, in the book you can see how the main three changed even Jack at the end of the book.

fwiw as someone whose favourite film is full metal jacket (by kubrick) but who also firmly believes the book it's based on is so so so so SO much better than the film, i think it's honestly a running theme with kubrick adaptations. the visuals are amazing and there's so much care and energy put into the film's aesthetic and music and energy, but i have always felt that the characters are what let these films down. i'm more familiar with FMJ/the book (the short timers by gustav hasford which is now out of print but available for free online as a PDF in case anyone's curious) but the nuance in the book is entirely absent in the film. in the book, just about every major character death is the result of a US marine accidentally or purposefully killing another US marine. it's a book by a vietnam veteran who was disillusioned with the US military following vietnam, and while FMJ to me accurately explores the horror of that war, i don't think it's a good adaptation of the book at all. key character moments with the main character were literally cut out of the movie entirely (e.g. one pivotal scene where he tries to reject a battlefield promotion because he doesn't want to take responsibility for other marines), and i think they're absolutely central to the plot and the character. in the shining, as you said, jack's alcoholism and anger issues are totally absent - i think they make him a much more sympathetic character too, because you want him to do well and feel better and not succumb to his addiction or his mental health issues, it's not that you just don't want him to like... go crazy. idk. i love the book a lot and the film is sort of empty of substance to me. it's pretty and the visuals are incredible, but it's a really thin story because the meat of the book just isn't there.

Wow, I must have a case of Mandela Effect as I vould have swore some of these were in the movies for a good few seconds before realising. I think that there was so much missing from the half blood prince. It is my favourite book but also the most disappointing film in my opinion. Would definitely tune in for a part two of the last two books for sure
