Makapuu is one of my favorite places on the planet-! Epic thick swell,perfect for boogieboarding/ Bodysurfing- Ide been bodysurfing all over Oahu for 3 years- & there I was, spring 1987, finishing work around 2pm,heard the surf report saying a hurricane swell was hitting Makapuu from 800 miles away ,coming in at 8-10 feet,which is unheard of at Makapuu- I drove straight there, put on my Navel Orange Duckfeet ,hopped in,fought thru 10ft walls of mons ter mush to get out to the breakers, saw what looked like a perfectly shaped wave for bodysurfing,swam aggressively toward the more crucial section, set up & timed my take off just right & the wave was so clean & steep & fast that my entire body skipped out of the water 3 times at the very beginning of the wave, then an epic left across the entire bay, eventually finding myself locoking at the 20 ft jaws of the shorebreak ( fyi- in HI, you double the swell size to get thface) starting to curl ahead of me, used my speed to escape out the backdoor at the last possible moment, putting me 10-12 ft underwater suddenly,watching the wall of oxygenated white water slammiing to the bottom 5 feet away, popoed up , let out a tribal scream as I was spinning around in the water from the eddies of water that form when a huge wave breaks - I felt very fortunate to have such an experience being a Howlie & all! Lol😂

nice as always! how do you guys protect yourself after sliding down the face and inside the barrel, the wave is eventually throw you toward the beach although i know you are not getting thrown by the lip which is to be avoided at any cost.
