I had a couple of wheelbarrows. They are made to fall apart quickly. The handles are not pressure treated. They are made to rot out quickly. The slat that fills the gap on the bottom that rests on the handle rots away quickly. The tires never air up again. I raised hell at Lowe's and eventually they gave me a new tire. I finally bought a thick metal wheelbarrow with metal handles. It has a solid rubber wheel. This is the ONLY kind of wheelbarrow to buy. I leave mine outside since my garage is full. The only issue with the wheelbarrow is I backed into it and bent the right side handle. I almost destroyed the damned thing. The metal hand, which is square and thick, has a ripple. Maybe I could heat it up with a heat gun that I have and pound out the ripple. Anyway, the handle is bent down but it still works. I've been afraid to do anything to the handle. I don't want to crack the steel. I almost ruined a $85 wheelbarrow.

My 270 has been leaking since I bought it a year ago. Pretty sure Ive replaced nearly every hose in it and also rebuilt the entire hydraulic pump. They're a real b*tch to work on. Finally found a small split in the large hose from hyd reservoir to pump. Had to make my own 1 7/8" crowfoot wrench and reach it through the bottom. Real bast*rd. All these hoses have o-ring fittings and you dont have to get them super tight. I had to use a pair of 4 foot cheaters on a 3/4" drive to break it lose. Insane. Just pray you never have to replace one.

I'm new to have you machinery but it seems like everything is always in the way . I don't understand how you guys get wrenches into these places even up by the filter. I'm struggling. If you could reply with some tips that would be amazing.

Buying a barrow with a plastic tray certainly means you can't throw haeavy rocks and such into the tray. Do that and you have a high risk of cracking it. However, plastic barrows have the virtue of being quite a lot lighter than steel. Buy a barrow with a steel tray, and you may well need to take it apart an refinish the tray when it starts to get rusty. Yes, that's additional work, but a steel tray will take a LOT more abuse than a barrow with a plastic tray. But they will rust out if you neglect them. Take your pick.

Very useful as I have just purchased one with a mystery leak. I fear I must comment however on your comments over the JD techs responses to you. It sounds like they were trying to be helpful to you despite them trying to figure out the picture without the benefit of actually seeing your equipment. People are not all seeing and there is no magic answers to any problems with leaks. Most shops would not advise you to do anything but bring it in for them to fix it. You must have a great dealer in your area to take the time to try to navigate your problem on an old model with no monetary gain for them. I would give them a shout out for trying to help. Just my 2 cents Canadian.

Any brand is good, and they will all need maintenance and repair eventually, especially if you abuse them. Plastic trays are abused by throwing rocks and such in them and cracking them. Steel trays are abused by leaving them out in the rain and failing to refinish them when they start to rust. Personally, I favor flat free tires ---worth a few extra dollars. RELIABILITY is a vital feature of wheelbarrows. A wheelbarrow with a flat tire is useless. Wheelbarrows with plastic trays have the virtue of being quite a lot lighter than a steel tray. Steel trays have the virtue of being able to take a lot more abuse than plastic trays, but you may need to refinish them when they start to rust.

My! How spoiled! He can see the deterioration taking place but does no maintenance or repair before things fall apart. Wheelbarrows are vehicles, and they need to be inspected, repaired and rebuilt as needed. The manure causes the tray to corrode. Gee whiz! Perhaps you should disassemble, sand off the corrosion and refinish the tray before the holes corrode out. The brace fails? Replace it. The front brace keeps riding up? Tighten it properly, or add another screw in each side to hold it in place. You can easily drive a screw in through the front which will prevent it from moving around. Don't think it's your job to do that inspection, maintenance, repair and rebuilding? Fine ----keep buying wheelbarrows as long as you like. I'm not impressed.

maintenance is necessary for longevity. But, replacement parts are also necessary for proper maintenance. TrueTemper doesn't sell replacement parts. if something breaks on your wheelbarrow, its on you to source an aftermarket part or a diy repair.

@@bulfrog5 <<maintenance is necessary for longevity. But, replacement parts are also necessary for proper maintenance. TrueTemper doesn't sell replacement parts. if something breaks on your wheelbarrow, its on you to source an aftermarket part or a diy repair.>> I have rebuilt three True Temper wheelbarrows in the past year or so. One I bought new thirty year ago, and the other two rebuilt from wheelbarrows people threw out that I obtained for free on Craigslist. Two are six cubic feet and one nine cubic feet. Two are steel, one is plastic. I agree with all the criticisms raised in the video, and have experienced all of them myself. However, they are pretty easily remedied at low cost if one wants to maintain their equipment rather than junk it. The one exception to that is flat tires. I've replaced the tires with permanently inflated ties, but even these were obtained from wheelbarrows that others junked and that I got a no cost. Adding extra screws or bolts to hold the front brace in place is an easy fix. Having the axle come out is easily remedied --- I just pounded a piece of wood into the axle housing to hold it in place. I've found that old wheelbarrows are so readily available for free on Craigslist that I've never needed to buy parts other than new bolts. (The bolts get the threads rusted out over time and often need to be cut off) Personally, when refinishing trays, I prime with repurposed primer aimed at painting houses, and then used house paint for finish coating. The bolt holes rust out? Yes, they often do. You can buy oversized washers or just cut a piece of sheet metal and drill a hole in it to reinforce the hole ----- or drill a new hole in a somewhat different place and use a new bolt in the new location. Don't feel you should be burdened with such maintenance and repair? Fine ---- buy something else. I found rebuilding three wheelbarrows to be a somewhat satisfying hobby. And when I got through with it, I had enough extra parts left over that I put my own Craigslist listing for "Free wheelbarrow parts" and all the surplus parts I had went to others over a few days! A final thought: I've decided that I prefer steel trays to plastic. Plastic cracks too easily, although it can be repaired. Steel is a lot more durable if you decide to refinish it rather than letting it fail from lack of maintenance. The big advantage of plastic is it's somewhat lighter weight, in my view. A final final thought: I would like to see SOME wheelbarrow manufacturer use stainless steel bolts! Regular steel bolt get the threads rusted off and that makes it difficult to remove the bolts to refinish the tray as needed ---and it's often necessary to cut the bolts off and replace them.

  • @ciphercode2298

I've suffered the same problems with my true temper. When we bought this property 16 years ago there was an old wheel barrow that was missing some pieces, but very sturdy built here in our garden. I took the best pieces from it to help structurally reinforce the true temper, but now the tray is breaking around the bolts. Luckily my brother in law is giving me a Jackson folded steel construction wheel barrow that's very heavily built, but in need of new handles. I can get new ash handles for less than $50 and probably have a wheel barrow that outlast me. It's a shame what's happened to companies like true temper, smh.

There are some common errors made in this video so make sure you photo your Gland and Piston before you take each seal off on your project. Watch other videos to learn more. You want to be sure seals go back in the right spot and facing the right direction. The end dust seal inside gland is put in backwards at the beginning, at end they briefly mention this when gland will not go onto rod. The piece on the end near the nut is called the piston with the yellow teflon seal above the oring. I have better luck heating this yellow seal so it shrinks back to normal and fits tighter and better after installing. I cover yellow seal with electrical tape and gently use a worm drive clamp to help it compress gently in place as it cools.
