    What about if picking the reserves path if youre already in your 30s and have a professional career in a certain field already? Is it better to just go in as an officer as you're already mid-management level at your civilian job and just continue in that capacity in your reserve Regiment and shoukd you pick a trade similar to ehat you already do, so it serves as a crosstraining opportunity or is it better to join as an NCM/"Digger" and go in as infantry, since it's part-time and the only job you cant have the chance to do as a regular civilian, albeit being alot more physically tasking than say taking up a Digger role in Signals or something else ?

    • @rhysdowden

    Hey mate, I’m a chemical engineering student and will be graduating in 2026. It’ll take me 12 months to get into the reserves infantry at least, having just started my application, so should I just wait until I’ve finished my degree and then go full time infantry? I can always get a civvy job as an engineer later.

    • @rhysdowden
      @rhysdowden Місяць тому

      Hi mate, it shouldn't take you 12 months to get into reserves (hopefully!) so I'd probably just do that. Then, once you finish your degree, which by then you wouldn't done 18 months or so in reserves, you can decide if you want to go for selection. Attempting selection from reserves is a valid option and one that many take... and many are successful. Send me an email mate and I can explain further: rhys@operatoredge.com

    No personal history with SF, but I've encountered this attitude with other selection processes. I always point out that standards being lower doesn't actually help put you any higher on the list ie if the pass criteria was 7/10 and its now down to 6/10, sure you've 'passed' the minimum, but all the blokes who were putting in the work to get 7/10 before are still getting 7/10, and when they go down the list to pick who they want for the job all those 7/10s are going to be ahead of you

    Thoughts on the importance of TAG E/W with AFP TRT, and state police like TRT/SOG/CIRT/SERT being pretty decent nowdays is TAG rotation a waste of time

    • @rhysdowden
      @rhysdowden 2 місяці тому

      TAG is still very relevant and important. TAG's capabilities/responsibilities go beyond domestic duties. I could definitely envisage a situation that would go beyond the abilities of a PTG that would require TAG's help. TAG enhances an operator's skillsets and it's great fun too!

    • @JohnRobertson-ie5eg
      @JohnRobertson-ie5eg Місяць тому

      AFP SRT and "most" state tac elements have it in the bag now. TAG E/W is a waste of time and detracts from both units ability to focus on current threats. Having to maintain a team on short notice for domestic duties puts too much strain on the already undermanned, under resourced command, overall diluting capability. Because the command is so under resourced. The capability is mainly held and argued for because there is a dollar sign attached to holding that capability for budgeting etc.. And besides if you go to the command with the dream to conduct domestic duties.. you'll be frowned upon... go join the cops...
