Teenage Engineering OP-XY Music Sketches | Experimental Beats & Sounds
Here are some sketches I made while I had the OP-XY. It’s a cool device, but I decided to return it due to some UX decisions I didn’t like. I might reconsider if these issues get improved.
The main drawbacks for me were:
- You can't seamlessly chain projects.
- There's no way to shift all notes on an active track one step left or right.
- The scene workflow needs improvement

Op1 - Field /// trk10

Been busy with other music projects but coming back to the op1f for a bit. Here's a small jam. Tip: Did you know that the endless sequencer is quantized to the tempo when manually triggering the hold parameter? (As long as you start the tape from a beat grid marker). OG op1 didn't do this AFAIK. Little bit of a cool performance feature.

It's a shame about the UX issues. Still, however, the best music I've heard come from this device! How did you find the sequencers and synth engines otherwise?
The synth engines are pretty good and a definite step up from the OP-1F. My favorites were Prism and Wavetable, while my least favorites were Hardsync and Dissolve. The sequencer is solid, but it’s difficult to tell when step components are enabled and switching bars is a bit clunky. I didn’t use the Players much, like Arpeggio or Maestro, but I did use Hold for some ambient drone stuff.
Dude! Where is your bandcamp/soundcloud/whatevs, you make some really killer tunes!
This is brilliant 👏👏
Wow, amazing track! Subbed :)
Very cool, very Aphex Twin in cadance and delivery!
Incredible
Wow! Mind blowing
Sounds great!
Damn, that was amazing! All from the Op-Z synths and samples?
yes!
Awesome!!!
Smooth performance 👍🏽
u wicked man, gonna b getting 2 kno ur traks next week @ work thanks 4 sharing, legend
"busy with other music projects" - does that mean there are more oxvac projects coming soon??
Under a different alias!
Gotta know that alias - please link or lemme know here!
Excellenet again!
👍👍👍
Nice track! Do you mean it's quantized when you play keys in real time to transpose it? (if tape is running, if started with HOLD)
I guess what I mean is that when turning the hold parameter for the endless sequencer (while tape is playing) you don’t have to worry too much about your timing when doing that (as long as the tape starts from a beat marker). The og op1 was way less forgiving… you had to perfectly turn the knob right on the beat.
@@sudolorenz Thanks for teaching me a new word, I thought you were just going nuts with the English language lol. Nice jam too!
Sick
Awesome
Are you using external samples? Or all originated in the op1?? This sounds great man
A tutorial on IDM on op1 would rock. No one is doing that.
This is like a whole new style of drum n bass music! Love it man, i used to love dnb but got burnt out on the repetitive nature of every song… this is fresh!
Would you be open to doing a video on how you constructed this? Awesome piece 👌🏽👌🏽✨
Nice work! You are getting A LOT out of that machine. Impressive. What BMP? And are your managing different tempo shifts?
Thanks! Don’t remember the exact bpm but maybe 160. Not doing any tempo shifts. It’s mainly the endless sequencer being recorded at different note intervals
do you have a background in music? this is very nice.
Thx! Only background I have in music was I used to dj before starting to produce music. Really just self taught.
That was hard af
Question: is your workflow a LOT of time spent with the sequencer? What you are doing feels very very hard to do with the OP-1 (and really impressive and awesome that you're doing it!)
Yes, it is. Endless sequencer mainly switching between 16th and 32nd notes in random mode and recording different layers of that. And since it’s a breakbeat chopped up you can just randomly hit keys and most of the time it sounds ok.
I'm asuming that's dor the drums mostly? @@sudolorenz Do you also use the endless sequencer for the melodic elements too?
@@jonajhiggins I think for this track the melodies were made with the arpeggiator and endless.
So glad you’re still making videos. OP1f or not these are fantastic tracks and would love to listen to more of your material. Would happy part money for albums on Bandcamp etc. so keep it up!
aphex vibes <3 how did you programmed the drums?
Endless sequencer
Always look at ur vids for inspo on my OG OP1. Still need that tutorial to drop! You make exactly the type of music I want to make on mine
hell yea man, one the best op1f users!
Nice ! Tutorial -tutorial !
dude! do some tutorials!!! these videos are some of the best of the OP-1 Field! Do you mainly use your own imported samples? Or the on board synth engines & samples along with Dbox?
A bit of everything
dude this is sick 🤢
I love that! Keep it up! Subbed! ❤
Great sound design!
Did you sell you OG-1?
Yup
@@sudolorenz i was about to sell mine today but i froze. ill give it another go.
Would like to see a video on the making of this track on the op 1f
"op1 is a toy" haters are gonna upset about this one. great song!
I like your videos. Subscribing.
Keep these coming, you're a virtuoso on this device! Subscribed!
Hauntingly beautiful; eerily atmospheric. Love it!!!
this shit is so fucking tight
subscribed to hear more in the future
incredible
so good
I cant believe this is mostly internal sounds, ive been wanting make a song just like this on my OP1. I would LOVE if you dropped a tutorial about your process? Keep it up!
you're good!
This is brilliant. Would love to see a breakdown of how you use the OP-1 sequencers to such great effect.
Thanks. Maybe one day I’ll do some quick tips or something. It’s really just a lot of experimentation, layering and picking the right sounds until it sounds good to me though.
@@sudolorenz please do a tutorial! I just came across your channel and I've been wanting to make songs just like this on my OP1 but I'm lacking direction. Thanks!!
@@sudolorenz I definitely second the idea of you recording some of your creative process because god damn, these tracks are all so good. I would listen tf out of your soundcloud if you have one. I am so curious how you create your drum patterns because that is definitely a style I would love to learn how to create and i just cannot make since of how to get started with making drums like that. But yes, great job dude. Some top tier creations coming out of you, cannot wait to see more!
Did you create a pseudo shift register with the endless? This is so awesome
dude you got to make some Drum & Bass😎😎
