    Hi, i am starting clinicals in a couple of days for an mls program and I wanted to ask if you have any advice? This program has been challenging for me because it is online (full time) and I'm concerned wirh how well i will do in clinicals being that chemistry is my weakest subject and the course i have spent the least amount of time working on prior to chemistry clinicals starting.

    Is working in a specialty? and doing generalist as prn less stressful than if i Just did full time generalist? I don't ont want to experience the stress and burnout that everyone speaks about in the field

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae 6 днів тому

      I don’t think it makes a difference. I choose to work prn generalist to keep up with skills. But, a lot of things lead to burnout 😭 I think having to constantly work a dept you really don’t like could lead to burnout. And for some, it might be too stressful to manage two jobs based on work schedules - that can also lead to burnout.

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae 15 днів тому

      @@MarkTilsed I found the easiest way - rest the smear slide on the table and put one drop of blood on the slide. Grab a second slide to "push" the blood forward. Hold it with your thumb and middle finger, use your index finger on top to keep it steady. Rest the push slide on the smear slide at a 45 degree angle towards the drop of blood. Move the push slide forward and it usually create a smooth feathered edge for me. Very hard to explain in text. 🤣🤣

I failed my first semester of nursing school due to life events, not because it was hard. @@domilarae ok, thank you so much for clarifying that. I’ve been googling and could not find an answer. But to also clarify, an MLS is more higher up than an MLT, right? Like, an MLS needs a B.S. and an MLT can secure a job with just an A.S. right?

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae 2 місяці тому

      Yes! I understand, it’s so confusing. To add more context - The jobs in my area are “Medical Technologist” for BS degree and “Medical/Clinical Lab Technician” for AS degree

    Dominique, I just want to say thank you… about a year ago I graduated with a degree in psychology (kind of fell into it) and suffered a lot from imposter syndrome. I had little interest in the career fields posited with my degree. After much, much searching and pondering on what I wanted to do with my life, I found your channel! Your diaries and general storytelling of your experience working as a MLS, and after much researching, I’m going for my bachelors in microbiology and pursing a certificate in MLS afterward. Would you recommend this route for me? I know it’s a loaded question, but I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons of how to achieve this goal. Thank you again! I finally feel I have a purpose because of your content.

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae 2 місяці тому

      Awee thanks for reaching out and sharing! Maybe consider a bachelors in MLS? Mainly if your end goal is certification, it would be faster and possibly cheaper. You could always minor in micro if it’s offered. Only suggesting a traditional route because I went the Bs in Micro to certificate program, and it added on an extra 18 months of school.

      Thank you so much for the reply. Yeah, I think that’s the cheapest/time persevering avenue to take. Say if I wanted to go on and be a clinical microbiologist or work in cancer research, will my experience as a MLS be considered favorable?

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae 2 місяці тому

      Yes! Especially if you are able to do research in undergrad and find a mentor. You’d be looking at the phd route. I work in microbiology now with a clinical microbiologist, they are phd level - usually conduct research and act as a liaison between doctors and lab within the hospital setting.

    • @domilarae

      That’s a good question, I spend the whole shift staring at screens haha. Maybe 80-90% of my work is in the computer to report results and in the screens of the analyzers to perform testing. The rest is the actual hands on work.
