Hi, i am starting clinicals in a couple of days for an mls program and I wanted to ask if you have any advice? This program has been challenging for me because it is online (full time) and I'm concerned wirh how well i will do in clinicals being that chemistry is my weakest subject and the course i have spent the least amount of time working on prior to chemistry clinicals starting.
Hello ma'am I'm a Medical Laboratory Sciencientist from Nigeria, can i have your contact if you don't mind
Is working in a specialty? and doing generalist as prn less stressful than if i Just did full time generalist? I don't ont want to experience the stress and burnout that everyone speaks about in the field
I don’t think it makes a difference. I choose to work prn generalist to keep up with skills. But, a lot of things lead to burnout 😭 I think having to constantly work a dept you really don’t like could lead to burnout. And for some, it might be too stressful to manage two jobs based on work schedules - that can also lead to burnout.
Congratulations!!!🎉🍾🎊 ❤
Thank you!!! ☺️
Hi Dominique! I love your content, I am a Pharmacobiologist Chemist in Mexico, it is similar to the MLS, I would like to certify my degree in the USA, could you help me? I need the ASCP BOC in PDF format ... Thank you 😁🎸
I don’t have it on pdf. I bought it on amazon
Thanks! What was your post-bacc program?
Thanks for your insight! Can you say more about your program's research component? Is it a thesis program? It's page doesn't mention that
It's non thesis, but the research is course based. I'm doing the microbiome concentration and it's bioinformatics related classes where I'm given data generated from the research labs to analyze as research if that makes sense.
Thanks!
Lovely! What are you studying for your masters? Or is there another video dedicated to that?
I'm studying microbiology for microbiome/bioinformatics studies! I just changed to this concentration over the summer, so I don't have videos for it yet.
@ cool!!
As a complete novice how do you make a blood smear
@@MarkTilsed I found the easiest way - rest the smear slide on the table and put one drop of blood on the slide. Grab a second slide to "push" the blood forward. Hold it with your thumb and middle finger, use your index finger on top to keep it steady. Rest the push slide on the smear slide at a 45 degree angle towards the drop of blood. Move the push slide forward and it usually create a smooth feathered edge for me. Very hard to explain in text. 🤣🤣
Hi Dominique. Sorry to disturb you. I just would like to know, as a person who is doing à bachelor in biochemistry do you think she could find a job in mLs ?
@@mercykaglan8418 yes with formal training to get certified, depending on if the employer requires it
I just got mine today! Unboxing now

forgot to order slides lol I have some coming in on Thursday. Have you looked at what colloidal silver looks like at a cellular lever? I’m really curious

Hey, im a junior soon to be shs , im planning to take medical scientist or medical laboratory scientist. I love ur videos. Is it hard to study for mls?
No it isn't hard but it can be alot of work at times. It's alot of information within a short amount of time
I'm thinking to take this exam soon, you gave me motivation
I will be taking my ASCP Phlebotomy exam in a little over a month. I intend to move upwards, towards my MLT cert shortly after. Just getting my foot in the door. Thank you for taking time to upload. Appreciate you, girl!
@@sheeplestrafer9413 good luck on your exam! That’s a great way to start getting experience in your lab journey!
I’m O negative so I can only get O negative.
I love this video. You are wonderful, intelligent and charismatic. I am still on the fence on going back to nursing school vs. MLS school. I failed my first semester of nursing school due to life events, not because it was hard. I also, like you, kind of realized I did not like dealing with patients, and am fascinated by diseases, infections, viruses, etc. I am more of an introvert, and would prefer a quiet setting. Nursing is still an option, but I find MLS fascinating. Thank you for your video!
I am a final year med lab science student, I cant wait to be a med lab scientist.
Good luck on your journey!
I'm interested in becoming a medical technologist. Do you have to do anything during or after schooling to start working? I hear a lot about rotations and such but idk what that means. Please be specific or maybe provide a few resources so I can maybe research about this. Thank you. Great video.
@@arbitrarylib clinical rotations are usually required depending on where you live. It’s like an internship where you go learn what it’s like to work in the lab
I have various revision books BOC 7th edition and Quick review cards...anyone interested hmu.
I hope you will drive more people in science and in amateur microscopy! Love from Montréal
Thank you for the kind words!
Really enjoyed this. Thank you

Can I apply for Msc. Med lab tech with a Bsc in Applied Health or public health?
Sure, it just depends on if you’ve taken the required classes for the specific program you are applying to.
Do you have notes of biology anatomy and physiology? These are my next classes and i am terrified. Also do you offer tutoring
Do you have notes of biology anatomy and physiology? These are my next classes and i am terrified. Also do you offer tutoring
My schedule is a little tight to do tutoring because I’m working on my masters, but I don’t mind helping 🙂 I don’t have any notes, but maybe we can video chat and find helpful resources online for bio and a&p. Just let me know!
@domilarae okay thanks so much. I'll reach out a few weeks before to give you time but it won't be for a few months. I was wondering ahead of time. Thank you so much.
You mentioned you worked from home during the shutdown. What type of work did you do?
I taught part time at a college and worked as a case investigator for the public health dept. I had my biology degree, so I was able to find jobs during Covid while going back to school. I’m hoping to go back to teaching at the college once I have my masters
@domilarae ok that is good you were able to continue working and able to use your biology degree. I am trying to get some ideas of my next steps while I am studying for the ASCP test while working as a MLS. Thank you for the information and good luck on your Masters degree journey!
Have you looked into lab assistant/specimen processing? These jobs would be most flexible with mls studies!
This was extremely helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your journey 🎉
So glad you found it helpful!
Here in mexico my salary is 6,036 usd anually :( Is 502 USD per month :((((( ! I wish i knew that career was gonna be poorly paid. 😢
Is that normal salary for healthcare jobs? Would you be able to pivot to other healthcare related jobs?
You're very articulate and have a beautiful smile :)
Thank you so much!
Please can a General Art student become a MLT?
Yes, after going back to school for the MLT classes.
Guys can I get advice I’m starting this major in spring can u give me advice on which books to get to learn before starting
My advice is take a break! You’ll have plenty of time to study while in the program.
Hello if i need to start preparing from tomorrow what tips would you recommend me go through the old topics as i am in my final year and just want to prepare it before graduation.
It might be helpful to begin practicing questions. And Get a copy of the exam outline for ASCP and go through the topics and see which ones you don’t understand/emember and go from there.
Hello I am new to the channel and I plan to take the exam in March 2025. I am taking separate exams (chemistry and then hematology). Can I still use these same materials (polansky cards, BOC text, Labce, etc)? Or should the materials be different since i am not taking the entire MLS or MLT exam but just chem and hematology? Thank you.
You should be fine. Each materials you listed cover all medical lab science topics, just focus on the exam you’ll be taking ☺️ good luck! Maybe a textbook for hematology and chemistry so you have a reference book for the review materials
Thank you for this information! It was very helpful.@@domilarae
Hey do you still work micro?
Yes I work full time in micro and prn as a generalist
@@domilarae how do you like it? Will you consider being travel tech?
@@Lamar-n6t I like it! I probably won’t travel. I think I’ll most likely pursue higher ed to lecture college classes, especially if I can find an mlt/mls program.
Hi! I have a question: why didn't you go for an MD? Or a PhD?
I don’t want to be a MD lol. I’m studying a masters in bioinformatics, so maybe I’ll consider a phd in the future.

You’re inspiring me to go into MLS. As an epileptic I don’t want to give up on the medical field, but I don’t want to work with needles. Thanks for your awesome vlogs and insight.
Thanks for sharing! I will say that we still may use needles to do certain testing, we just don’t have to stick patients
Lovely microscope. Just wondering if the SW380T came with a camera to connect with a laptop? Thanks again
That’s awesome! I wanted one with a camera, but it wasn’t in stock at the time. I’d love to know about your experience with the camera!
Hi thank you for your video i have my biology degree Was told i have to go to school one year for MLS program I am so tired of school my question is will lab hire you just with bio degree And is MLS program class hard ?
Yea, I went back to school for it. It really depends on your area that you live in, if hospitals will hire you or not
What is the difference between clinical vs medical lab tech?
It’s the same thing
@@domilarae ok, thank you so much for clarifying that. I’ve been googling and could not find an answer. But to also clarify, an MLS is more higher up than an MLT, right? Like, an MLS needs a B.S. and an MLT can secure a job with just an A.S. right?
Yes! I understand, it’s so confusing. To add more context - The jobs in my area are “Medical Technologist” for BS degree and “Medical/Clinical Lab Technician” for AS degree
Dominique, I just want to say thank you… about a year ago I graduated with a degree in psychology (kind of fell into it) and suffered a lot from imposter syndrome. I had little interest in the career fields posited with my degree. After much, much searching and pondering on what I wanted to do with my life, I found your channel! Your diaries and general storytelling of your experience working as a MLS, and after much researching, I’m going for my bachelors in microbiology and pursing a certificate in MLS afterward. Would you recommend this route for me? I know it’s a loaded question, but I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons of how to achieve this goal. Thank you again! I finally feel I have a purpose because of your content.
Awee thanks for reaching out and sharing! Maybe consider a bachelors in MLS? Mainly if your end goal is certification, it would be faster and possibly cheaper. You could always minor in micro if it’s offered. Only suggesting a traditional route because I went the Bs in Micro to certificate program, and it added on an extra 18 months of school.
Thank you so much for the reply. Yeah, I think that’s the cheapest/time persevering avenue to take. Say if I wanted to go on and be a clinical microbiologist or work in cancer research, will my experience as a MLS be considered favorable?
Yes! Especially if you are able to do research in undergrad and find a mentor. You’d be looking at the phd route. I work in microbiology now with a clinical microbiologist, they are phd level - usually conduct research and act as a liaison between doctors and lab within the hospital setting.
❤❤❤ first and super cute dragoncon fits!
💕💕 thank you!
Hi! I just watched one of your videos from like a year ago and you said you were gonna have BioChem study guides. I just wanted to ask, how can I find it on your page? Thanks 🙏🏽 ❤ I already love your videos now too lol really glad your keeping it going🙌🏾🔥
laraeslab.wordpress.com/medical-laboratory-science/ I created a website with tips and resources! It's still a work in progress, but check it out when you get a chance!
@@domilarae Thank you so much! Again love what your doing it’s very inspiring🤗
Thanks this was helpful. What percentage of your time would you say is "screen work" e.g. report writing versus other tasks e.g lab work. THank you
That’s a good question, I spend the whole shift staring at screens haha. Maybe 80-90% of my work is in the computer to report results and in the screens of the analyzers to perform testing. The rest is the actual hands on work.
