Human Data Science, by Prof. Robert West
Inaugural Lecture - Human Data Science
Abstract
Today, humans and computers inherently coexist. Not only do digital platforms capture human behavior, they shape human behavior. Much of human behavior is what it is precisely because it takes place on digital platforms. Therefore, in the 21st century, the study of humans and the study of computers are inseparable. In the EPFL Data Science Lab (dlab), we embrace the close coexistence of humans and computers and leverage the massive amounts of data that humans generate when interacting with computers in order to derive useful insights into human behavior, build causal models of human behavior, and develop practical tools, algorithms, and methods, with the ultimate goal of improving human lives using data. In this talk, I showcase how my lab works toward this goal by blending artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and computational social science.
About the speaker
Robert West is an associate professor of computer science at EPFL, where he heads the Data Science Lab (dlab). His research aims to make sense of large amounts of data by developing and applying algorithms and techniques in natural language processing, machine learning, and computational social science. Typically, the data he works with is generated by humans (e.g., natural language or behavioral traces), and frequently it is collected on the Web (e.g., using wikis, online news, social media, server logs, online games). Bob received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University (2016), his MSc from McGill University (2010), and his undergraduate degree from Technische Universität München (2007). He is a Wikimedia Foundation Research Fellow, an Associate Editor of ICWSM and EPJ Data Science, and a co-founder of the Wiki Workshop and the Applied Machine Learning Days. His work has won several awards, including best/outstanding paper awards at ICWSM’21, ICWSM’19, and WWW’13, a Google Faculty Research Award, a Facebook Research Award, the ICWSM’22 Adamic-Glance Distinguished Young Researcher Award, and an SNSF Starting Grant.

Inaugural Lecture - Multimodality and Embodiment in Vision Abstract The remarkable progress in Computer Vision and Machine Learning now enables us to automatically detect the objects in images, caption them, or estimate the 3D structure. But are we close to sophisticated visual capabilities, such as those that even simple biological organisms exhibit? I discuss two related directions as steps t...

Inaugural Lecture - Follow the Gradient: A Tour of Neural Network Theory Abstract With ChatGPT and the latest advances in Large Language Models, artificial intelligence is the talk of the town. However, the theoretical foundations of such large machine learning models remain unclear. In this talk, I discuss recent results that shed light on one of the mysteries behind this success: why gradient...

Inaugural Lecture - Complexity Theory Through Play, by Prof. Mika Göös Abstract Computational complexity theory addresses the question: What are the fundamental limitations of efficient computation? The foundational question of the field - the P ≠ NP conjecture - is the principal motivator for the research conducted in our Theory of Computation Lab at EPFL. I discuss recent results from our lab...

Inaugural Lecture - Differentiable Simulation of Light: why it matters, and what makes it hard!, by Prof. Wenzel Jakob Abstract The term "rendering" refers to computer programs that simulate light inside a virtual world to produce synthetic photographs. Their realism has steadily grown within the last decade, to the extent that renderings are now often indistinguishable from reality. *Inverse* ...

Inaugural Lecture - Vision and Language in Brains and Machines, by Prof. Martin Schrimpf Abstract While modern machine learning originated from the study of the brain and mind, it has long departed from focusing on the human implementation to intelligence. Today's AI models are thus argued by many to be inconsistent with biology. However, empirical evidence suggests that the latest models conve...

Bitcoin's energy use is not 'useless', since the currency is used by millions around the world, and the fact that it requires real-world cost to produce new coins is precisely what ensures that the system cannot be easily controlled by a single entity. The proposed idea of quorums makes no sense to me, what is the cost of being a node in such a network? Either there is no cost, in which case anyone can make as many nodes as possible to 'shout loudest', or there is a cost, in which case we are back to square one. If you need permission to join as a node, who gives permission? Not requiring permission to participate is also fundamental in bitcoin
