Allegheny 100 Challenge: 25 Miles Attempt
Переглядів 1813 місяці тому
Allegheny 100 Challenge: 25 Miles Attempt The Allegheny 100 Challenge (A100) has been running annually for the past dozen or so years. People have 50 hours to complete 100, 75, 50, or 25 miles of North Country Trail. This year about 200 people took part in the challenge. A surprisingly large number of people, almost 90, would attempt to travel 100 miles and almost a third would complete the cha...
Niagara Falls - May 12, 2024

Niagara Falls - May 12, 2024 Niagara Falls is three waterfalls. On the American side are the American and Bridal Veil Falls; Horseshoe Falls occupies the Canadaian side. Horseshoe Falls is , by far, the more impressive waterfall probably accounting for about 90% of the volume of water that pours down. During peak tourist season on the order of 2,800 cubic meters per second of water pours over N...
Total Solar Rclipse - April 8, 2024
Переглядів 345 місяців тому
Two friends and I went to Side Cut Metropark in Toledo, Ohio to watch the total solar eclipse. While my shots of the sun aren’t much, it wasn’t really my plan to get good shots though I could’ve done better, you should still get a sense of things. A total eclipse is markedly different from even an annular eclipse. It’s worth seeing and experiencing.
Cold Weather Survival Skills and Camp

On the weekend of February 3-4, 2024 Andy and I took part in a general skills class targeted towards cold weather survival. The class was organized and taught by Michael Neiger and some fellow associates. Michael has extensive outdoor experience including considerable work in search-and-rescue. I certainly do not think I know that much about backcountry survivial and my experience is a match f...

Trip of Conspicuous Consumption: A Day in Boulder, Colorado
Переглядів 3510 місяців тому
Between leaf peeping season and ski season there must be a lull in travel to Denver, Colorado. Frontier Airlines runs round-trip flights between Detroit and Denver for about $50. Of course, that’s just the base fare. If you want to check a bag or even use the overhead you are going to pay more. However, with a bit of care and maybe not too much conspicuous consumption you can make a quick trip ...
Overnight at Blind Lake, Pinckney Recreation Area, Michigan

An overnight backpacking and then packrafting trip along the Patawatomi Trail to Blind Lake and then Hell. But things don’t quite go as planned…. By the way, I do know the audio is slightly out of sync in the clip where Lil is enthusing about the food. It was be out of sync or chop off a big piece of video. Not ideal either way. Release the Salami (and BBQ Beans)
Переглядів 53Рік тому
Beef Summer Sausage There are numerous recipes for making summer sausage and similar things on the Internet. This is my first attempt and it is loosely based on ideas I picked up from Food Wishes Summer Sausage and Duncan Henry’s Wild Hunter Salami. My result was pretty good. But, I can see room for improvement. For example, I would use more pepper in the future. I also would definitely try to ...
Dinner Outside: Pesto Smoked Cheesed Baguettes and More

Quick Pickles These should be kept in the refrigerator. They are a quick pickle recipe that uses vinegar to create the pickles. Dissolve the sugar and salt in the vinegar (you can do this faster by bringing the vinegar to a boil), add the water and other spices. I filled my jars with the cucumbers and placed slices of garlic in the jars at the same time. After tightly filling the jars with your...
Dinner Outside: Smoked Shrimp, Broccoli, and Pierogis
Переглядів 74Рік тому
This meal took place the first Sunday of February. The snow was lingering on (that wouldn’t last) and the afternoon was mostly cloudy and just a bit above freezing. Since I was just back from the pretty much endless sunshine of SIesta Key, Florida it was a bit of an adjustment. However, the fire within my Breeo firepit and the comfort of easily prepared food made this a lovely afternoon.

Hiking All Around Sackrider Hill

There are numerous primary trails, side trails, game trails, and even two-tracks worming through the forests and fields that surround Sackrider Hill in Waterloo Recreation Area. Many peter out at the edges of private lands liberally dotted with “no trespassing” signs. If you decide to explore these paths you are bound to have many out-and-back walks. But, you will also be able to walk off many ...
A Weekend Along the Manistee River Trail
Переглядів 77Рік тому
It is the first weekend of December. The ground is dusted with just enough snow to liven the scene up some. There are probably places where the trail will be icy. It’s overcast, a bit blustery, and right around freezing athe the Manistee River Trail terminus by Red Bridge. I am planning a conservative, read short, backpacking trip at least as far as mileages go. While Andy will finish his NOrth...

I was there circa 1960 when they had all of the tunnels open to the public. I believe several of them are closed these days. I recall getting soaked to the bone despite heavy raincoats and black rubber boots they issued.

First visit was in the summer of 1969 while the US falls were turned off. Passageway to see the third view port was open, but not all the way as some cracks had appeared. The funicular to the boats was not there, as it was closed at last visit. We had to wear heavy black rubber rain coats and boots in 1969, and there were two change rooms to put on the rubber attire. No one got wet like they do with the cheap blue plastic ponchos.

Just like when I’m up very high and able to look/lean against the top floor windows, such as during dinning at the “rainbow room” or “windows on the world” at the lost World Trade Center” towers, whenever I’d visit NF or The Grand Canyon NP, I’d always get the peculiar feeling of wanting to jump… I’ve heard that this is a common sensation that many experience?

This is a great video. Shows all the interesting outlooks of the Falls, short and sweet and to the point. My grandparents vacationed there for their honeymoon in the 1920's. There weren't the big resorts of today. Just nature and you. There is the Marilyn Monroe movie that was filmed there. It was a very good movie thriller that really never got much attention. Can't remember the name, probably Niagra. IMDB it and rent it.
