The Building of Garrison Dam
You can't dam the missouri river without some serious engineering. Peter Kiewitz Sons Company and Morrison Knudsen Company Incorporated are up to the task, with a massive operation of men and machines moving earth at a record pace. A key to their success is a preventive maintenance program that keeps the machines running smooth day and night. When finished, the Garrison Dam will be the largest rolled phil earth embankment in the world, standing 21 stories high and half a mile wide at its base. The reservoir it creates will be 390,000 acres big, with enough power generated to supply more than 1 million people.

Construction workers in the early days of filmmaking wore soft caps, not hard hats
Переглядів 222 роки тому
In the days when this unique film was shot, construction workers wore soft caps, not hard hats. There was so much construction work to be done that many of those early machines looked as though they might have been made up as they went along by the magnificent men who drove them.

A hundred years earlier, harvesting grain was done with a man swinging a scythe all day to cut an acre of grain. Then it had to be bound up into hand tied bundles an tossed into a wagon, if you were lucky to have a horse and wagon. Then the grain had to be threshed by beating it by hand or having animals walk on it (You shall not muzzle the kine who teadeth out the grain..) Then wait for a windy day when the grain can be repeatedly tossed into the air to winnow the chaff from the grain. I don't think we can appreciate how much hard physical labor went into just harvesting grain.

State of the art in its day. But today’s combine certainly saves a lot more time. Which is still many hours of work that’s involved in harvesting.

My grandfather and father had one similar but powered by a cub engine in the early 50s. It was a “sacker” instead of a grain tank

From what little history I could find on this machine, this video would have came out around 1942. That guy that came into the film at about 5:30 made about as much sense as Kamela when she talks. I don't understand what the merit was of bringing him into this?

These little machines fit a lot of farms of the 40s. The farmers were transitioning from horses so the farms were small, 120 acres or less. Our first combine was an Allis Chalmers 40 inch cut about 43. Our second combine was an IH 52R about 1948. These little machines filled our need since our big fields were 12 acres.

<<That guy that came into the film at about 5:30 made about as much sense as Kamela when she talks. I don't understand what the merit was of bringing him into this?>> Displaying working people and mechanics as fools was the entertainment of the day, apparently.

I really like these old promotional films about farm equipment. I grew up on a farm years ago and I know farmers loved any equipment that would keep them from the drudgery of doing labor intense field work.

Just watched a clip of the AF11 with 61’ header. Looks cool but there were a lot more people making their living on the farm when that four footer came out. Not sure progress is all it’s cracked up too be. Actually seen one of these old girl’s work when I was a kid. It was on it’s last legs then, I guess I am now🤓

These rigs are just for show on a real job the rear engine radiator would have a guard in front of it and the mud flaps would be torn off the first day and the dif lock would have a bolt under it so you can't use it to many people apply it and turn and it destroys the planetaries and that is a major repair in all not a bad viedo for a beginner A company like Kiewit construction would show you a viedo like this if you went to work for them to run a push poll.
