Staring into Oblivion: The Full Texhnolyze Retrospective
Hello everyone, and welcome to the belated Halloween special! For this episode, I wanted to talk on something appropriately frightening and noteworthy, and that led me to talk on Texhnolyze. Now Texhnolyze is a fascinating and somewhat misunderstood piece that while obscure, lives on and is worthy of an in depth look, and while it is dark, I do not think it a piece of nihilistic rhetoric as some may claim. I've wanted to speak on it a while, though I always wanted to do more than a one off, and yet didn't want to spend 2-3 months on a full retrospective. So instead I used some new production techniques and got it done in a month (I need some sleep). Also I know the main character's name is Ichise, so please forgive every time I say "Ichinose" reading is hard... And of course.....

Does Ghost in Shell Arise Arise to Expectations?
Переглядів 5173 місяці тому
Welcome to another one off everybody! I've been feeling like watching Ghost in the Shell for a while, but of course wanted to cover something more obscure than one of the most well known anime productions of all time. As such, I've embarked to talk on the, somewhat controversial, Ghost in the Shell Arise prequel. Is it good? Is it bad? How is it as a member of the Ghost in the Shell Universe? A...

Hi Everyone and welcome to another supercut of a previous retrospective, and this one will be on one of my favorite series, the oft maligned Ergo Proxy. While some might hold the series to be a pretentious and depressing slog, I will attempt to prove why it isn't and is actually a beautiful tale of rebirth and endurance. Please enjoy! Welcome to the full Version of Wrestling with RahXephon, an in-depth retrospective on one of the oddest obscure animes out there. While some things about the series are clear, like its divisive nature and great technicals, many things are not like much of its writing and whether or not its actually "good". Here we will try to add some clarity to these points by examining some of the series' plo...
When Reach Exceeds Grasp, My Final Thoughts on RahXephon (WwR 17)

Well. Its finally time. After having spent way too long examining and analyzing RahXephon, its time to finally call it. I've spoken on all I've felt like and all that's left is to give my final thoughts on this odd art piece of a series. Its not great, sometimes its not even competent, and yet its oddly captivating in its own weird way..... And of Course. Dog Footage from the amazing TV pilot "...
RahXephon's Failed and Fumbled Themes (WwR 16)

Hi everyone, its time for the "theme component" of the RahXephon Retrospective. As I have already spoke on the idea of duty in the intro video, and how the series promotes poor mental hygiene in the Haruka and Eva Vs RaX episodes, this one will focus on a few smaller thematic elements I picked up upon. Please enjoy as I prepare to wrap up this series. And of course... All properties shown here ...

Well folks, we've finally done it, we've finally got to the main character of RahXephon and he's... here. Here we will see how, And of Course... All properties shown here belong to their respective owners. "RahXephon"...
The Curious Quandary of Quan (WwR 14)

Hi everyone, and welcome to a video about one of the oddest characters I've ever looked at on this channel. Now as a character Quon, isn't that weird, but from a writing stand point she very much is. Her place, role, and character feel very experimental and even if its not always a successful experiment, this experimental nature is still interesting. While she initially simply feels superfluous...

The Soundtracks of Evangelion and RahXephon are both delights to listen to even if RahXephon as a series is rather flawed. Please enjoy this low effort edit I cobbled together in the 4 hours of free time I had this week. I had to pull ...

Ever since the beginning of this retrsopective, I knew I would have to prove why RahXephon isn't just an Evangelion clone, and I think I have. While the two share many visuals, at there core they are very differnet and here I will elabotate as to why. His everyone, and welcome to a special episode of Wrestling with RahXephon. This was originally the video on the tertiary cast, but a small rant about motivations in it got me thinking about why everyone in RahXephon wants to re tune the world. I too saw it on Toonami, like some other commenters. I thought it had an iconic look and a plot far too complex for my tiny brain to follow, and now as an adult thats the kind of thing I've come to seek out and dwell in. Mysterious and shadowy rabbit holes of my past with no clear start or end, no clear meaning. A vague name on the edge of my tongue. (It also happened when I tracked down a great time travel shonen with psychic powers called Psyren from my recollections of long gone Jump issues) I figured I might come out the other side with my own interpretation. And I didn't. I came out the other end confused, bewildered, and totally in love. I love multilayered pieces. Bleach being written with a 3 layered approach, metaphors and themes telling more of the story than the characters being a big factor, cemented by cutting my teeth on things like Angel's Egg (brilliant movie, looking forward to watching your video on it) I suppose this being the opposite experience to that structure (something that also entices me, character studies and character focused pieces) only helped further cement it as something I will definitely watch again, and appreciate all over again. I think I agree with Roger, I don't really have to fret too much over what the show is telling me, or what the plot is. I'll always be interested of course, but no matter what it won't stop me being confident in Big O. Fin

    Considering how Chiaki Konaka said the ending was supposed to represent how we should stop obsessing over the past,it is very apt to end it this way. Kinda sad that we have no future to build towards nor do we learn from past mistakes.

    He is peetty great if, over his head and always a bit on the edge :D , i mean him nd Hitomi kinda traumabond a lot even.If its pretty much since the start. And he is, yeah has fears opening up due a close persons betrayal :( and interesting how good the writing is how he and his brother are close to catgirls and it rarely comes up. I mean Merle does serve as good confidant too.

    I love his character , and he even is likable and a decent bloke, who is kinda a player and womanizer? Who is still , he deserves love but its very fitting its familial that actually lets him have that, and talk about his issues. Also while he is a not great love interest, he is a adecent bloke still doing his duty and trying to help? But yeah its fitting the white knight is not ending in a romantic pair. And his issues and latching on any romantic maybe not great person isnt great, like him and van bounding is actually unproblematic. He is great because he is real and still a decent bloke with issues? I dont think he is a dont be like that character per se other than , yeah he clearly being not a good love interest, but i found him very real and how he , if you relate to him, please work your issues out and dont try to solve them with anything romantic ok. Its what Allen needed even hey. And i cant say ihe is dont be like that characte ras, he is a decent bloke he just has issues too to deal with and Hitomi really brings them out that he , has to deal with them.

    Honestly yMilerna and Dryden even end on a note that, maybe they will end up together or whats hinted there, or its not, but she needs really figure herself out and he is damn mature enough to not force anything, whenever that should be or nor. So it even kinda does leave room but , yeah he sure wont hold her back figuring herself out. So he does the mature thing. I mean he likes he still, right. He just also wants her to be happy and it not be based on duty. So its still kinda a romance but a mature one, kinda, while leaving he rto figure out who she is? So its not even an unromantic ending its just an, we need room and i want a honest relationship not one you feel guilted, whatever will be, so its fitting and leaving room for a future one?

    Yayy Folken the pretty amazing character that is pretty morally complex. <he seems to be willing to be tool for the empire till at a point he is fed up by twisted experiments, which some patience might be given he also got saved apearently by it, and he weems to prefer to win with little force and, yeah he is very interesting as antagonist that really turns around to on his own motivations becomes a great ally, even does lead kind of the efforts against his former boss. And Vans relationship even more so as Van really acts out against him and is angry at him and wants him dead, but really because he is mad hoe he betrayed him and how hurt he is over it because he admired hin.

    I miss the old artstyle, also definitly something for eveyone, hell the first episode has a cool teenage dude slaying a dragon, mechs, an good fights too. Plus trauma, war and that Also its nice hor Allen and Van can be friends, and rivals and never fight over her, sometimes they just spar even. And what any love triangle should have, dont do any party dirty which they dont. Also nice how that magucal pendant gets somewhat maybe explained? And her powers that probably rely on Gaea?! In that the Fate maschine And Gaea has weird energy that probably gavce her and her grandma with that pendant powers? Maybe how it came to be made it a magical charged celestial object. In german too, granted the series is very much the same bzut the trailer sold it more action focused , and it has , and it didnt , ok it did somehow cut the final 2 episodes, but yeah the trailer was mecha action heavy.

    It might be whats said how he takes from both ethics as orgama is , ethics, and reason, , like he does accept the technology, he is kinda 3 and became human, maybe that he was dehumanized is that , he became human, And its tragic but he found a life worth living even if he tragically lost it and, made his peace enjoying life as h could? Oh have you ever watched lexx, its not an anime but, very unique, and also oddly hopeful and the dark humor helping a lot. And pretty good philosophic too with, between raunchy horny and high concept scifi thats weird but pretty inspiting in a cartoonich intentional dark world where everything goes bad, And its fun. And really a good take on that philosophy i think. With very inspiring how that misfits still neve rgive up and keep the bits of morality they have. Also Miachael Mcmanus is a gem. And kubera the last god, a webtoon thats better translated on mangadex that, is, very very , its fun, a great drama but fun and a masterpiece that is, also good mystery paying off layers sucwessful like a puzzlr and, really great emotional too. And so deep even and very philosophical as well. And gets dark, very dark, but still fun with some hope through that could be just wishing that characters have some bittersweet not tragic end? And the cynical unfair world and psycjhological stuff, are also having humor and good to have. Its great. Also the worldbuilding is amazingly fleshed out and brilliant over insane, its truely an epos that is so thought out from the start in details even that, like its big, its has various races and magical system interwovewn that, never falter ever, which is insane as ww get viewpoints in conflicts a lot.

      I think I know that it'll never happen but I'm curious how the creators see this for humanity's sake. Let's not kid ourselves that this is a post-apocalyptic scenario. Rebouncing back to industrial levels will take centuries, if at all.

    Blue Gender is the type of anime that made me want a 'Day after tomorrow' short story. The Blues end into their voluntary extinction, humanity is back at the basics of primitive technology & economy (supposedly), and the main characters end up in South America. I kind of wanted an ending to the ending, something into the far future, where Yugi & Marlene already are into their 40s or 50s. What are they doing, how are they doing, how is their kid doing, and so on. Is Yugi happy for real and found his peace? I know there won't be a final addendum but, +20 years later, I want the writers to offer their own opinion whether his sacrifices eventually paid out for him. A closure to whether it all mattered, not as a result of a consequence of tragedies along the way.

      It is a tragedy of many obscure pieces that the ending is what you get and that's it. I understand that very often something of an open ending is intentional, and yet every time I watch a series for this channel, there's always that moment in the next to last and last episodes where I go, "we got 42 minutes here, how are we gonna wrap all this up, where are we going?". Sometimes its great sometimes its horrible, a lot of times its competent. This kind of ending is one of the trademarks of shorter pieces for me and something I Love, even if not on a case by case basis.

    They have space lasers that can cut through or shoot down space corvettes, but nobody thought to combine lasers & electricity into effective weapons. That soldiers & their mechs don't have laser weapons or electric burst plasma weapons shows that there is, at least storywise, an intentional handicap. Ammo logistics shouldn't be a problem at that point, yet it is. Like you said, they should've won already over the Blues or require the 'B cell' supersoldiers as the final marginal superior firepower for a final KO.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 21 день тому

      I think the writers had a vision in their head of a human resistance based in space fighting this desperate war of survival and its gonna be epic and gritty, and awesome and futuristic and advanced, and then never reconciled the schism between how futuristic the setting is and how lacking Earth 2's forces are. Its a glaring example of creative vision overlooking/ignoring/failing to explore realistic logistical stuff and kind of a detriment to the series. It doesn't ruin it for me and does a decent job painting the council as bad, but yeah there seemed to be a conscience decision to prioritize the vision over the realistic result.

    The character of Tony Frost is the Joker version of the series, an agent of chaos, even if presented in the middle of the story up until the near end. An agent of chaos, a force of nature almost. The thing that it isn't implied and not really expained, is until his and Yugi's confrontation: his motive(s). His common complaint, which motivated his vice, is that he's bothered to be in this world. He is bothered that he was woken up in this world and tasked to clean it. He doesn't want anyone because misanthropy already got to him, and because he's the agent of chaos, the _how_ and _why_ don't matter in the end. There's one more layer, that the Earth wants humanity gone and he's the "messiah". Seno Miyagi eventually confirms it after the battle. It is said, in regards to human will, that there's a profound detail about hypnosis: a person isn't hypnotized unless that person agrees subconciously & unconciously to be hypnotized. Tony Frost repeating what Earth wants and he want to be the messenger boy is, at its core, the confirmation that he knows he's being 'manipulated' by Earth and that he accepts that to fuel his misanthropy & justify it. A person that wants to do harm will believe in something that will allow & justify doing harm, so it is a self-confirmation bias that works just like hypnosis. So in the end, he serves nothing more than an agent of chaos.

    • @obscureanimememories6697

      I really wished Blue Gender leaned into this from the start. I think if Tony went full Joker mode from the start and they never tried to frame him as Yuji's friend he would have made for a much more entertaining character, and I honestly don't know what the intention was here. Splitting the focus between Tony being Yuji's 'friend' and the Blue Joker doesn't really work for me because of how slipshod the execution of the prior is and its obvious that this was only done to try and add some kind of emotional tension here. At least thats how I see it.

    I feel like that, narrative-wise, she's the expose answer to that old question: what would happen if a caveman would appear in our world. She doesn't belong and I think that it's an answer to people's obsession over the past or the future, with the answer being, per Alisha's character story: whether past or future, none of us would fit in. Maybe we shouldn't obsess nor entertain such scenarios and just live for how long we're supposed to live, in the world/generational segment we've been acclimatize into. I guess that people will be bothered by this, because it implies a subtle element of uniformity (often confused with conformity) but I took it as an example against self-destruction. Why against self-destruction? You know how you enter into somebody else's home or some establishment, and use their kitchen, or toilet, or living room? You know it's the same thing with what you have but intuitively you don't really feel comfortable, while putting up the facade of normalcy. She's exactly like Yugi but, because of age differentiation, and how each came to be, she's the caveman that can't really stick to the times. All of the women in the series are portrayed as in their 20s or older, while she's a teenager or young adult. Not comparable, yet again. Every person belongs & fits to his or her generation, more or less. The writers intentionally crafted her character to not fit in and have all these flaws intentionally, while communicating their own answers to "what ifs..." In the end, like all tragic characters, she suffers the most but she doesn't care.

    • @obscureanimememories6697

      This is why Alisha's character never bothered me. I know her character gets a fair amount of hate because of how useless she is, but that's kind of the point. Her presence is intended to show how bad everything is and kind of deconstruct the trope of a wunderkind anime protagonist. She's supposed to be useless, but she isn't malicious or anything, just a realistic portrayal of how the trope would work in real life, and why it doesn't. I honestly think her presence is one of the most clever parts of the series as it shows some writing nuance and self awareness, as well as tying into the generally grounded nature of the series.

      Blue Gender's Ending is kind of a mystery to me. I think it is in line with the idea that humanity is not the be all end all/must respect the larger environment, and yet it does have an odd air misanthropy. I don't hate it and think it appropriate and hopeful (for the few that survive) but won't deny it does feel kind of rushed/weird. There is a definite divide and difference in feel between the first and second half of the series.

    "An Evangelion clone" Whoever said that about this series, is probably retarded. If anything, it's an Armored Trooper Votoms clone... and the Starship Troopers OVA.

    I got recommended this video 4 months ago and I wanted to post a comment when I finished Rahxephon before so I could have an understanding of both series first. I finished it today and trust me it costed me a bit due well having to have taken breaks between First of all both have quick ass openings... but Hemisphere is not as catchy as Cruel Angel Thesis. Second obviously Evangelion has better side cast where Rahxephon has somewhat mediocre sidecast and forgettable since no one has a decent mech but the protagonist or any plot relevance TBH most of the side stories felt like... so why do you put this in here.... Third, Ayato gets shit done, Shinji doesnt, I liked him more as a protagonist than Shinji but I do understand why that was a flaw because he was the chosen one from the start and everything centered around him, anyone who is not Ayato is doomed to fail, just like in the ending pretty much most of the cast died and I did not feel anything unlike the end of evangelion movie... when they just started killing off characters i was like oh Ok... xD. Fourth, the plot in Rahxephon is all over the place... it feels like... I Cruised through the first 15 episodes and I was barely with a MEH. It did not feel urgent or anykind of stakes raised or anything.... Well it kind of plays into the story because what everyone was waiting was for Ayato to awaken so.... still it made it in some sense a bore watch. But is it true that in the end the end of Rahxephon felt a bit meh, everyone got what they wanted and it was a happy ending.... nothing bad happened and in the end everything worked out as intended.... And this is where I bring a curious point... it felt too similar to the.... EVANGELION MOVIES.... might be inspiration or not but this completly felt like I was rewatching those all over again. Everything what we wished in Evangelion, a competent protagonist... and all of that... we got it wayy before with RahXephon even the ending.... Idk if he got inspired to do this by Rahxephon but thats some conspiracy theory. In the end I do undertsand when Evangelion thrived Rahxephon failed specially in deliver a kind of organized story. Some plots were.... stupid in Rahxephon... specially the whole D stuff and some of the final deaths... I do agree Evangelion felt more complete by being an incomplete mess than Rahxephon which was aiming to be a complete experience but an incomplete mess. At least we did not get a lot of +30 years of people being obessed and theorising about every aspect of Evangelion like we did with Rahxephon. Plus the Rahxephon feels like an ok design just a bit off and weird....

      Thanks for coming back to watch! I think you bring up a really neat point and that is that Eva works as what is because Shinji kind of sucks. While this can make him unlikable and weak, it also allows the other members of the cast to do more and generally feeds into all the emotional drama present. Since everyone in Eva is super flawed it kind of forces the cast to distribute the work. It forces more emotional involvement from the viewer as even if you don't like Shinji that's more than the meh I felt every time say Itsuki showed up in RahXephon. Meanwhile in RahXephon yeah everyone kind of revolves around Ayato, and while he is a fine protagonist, he is let down by a cast that again revolves around him. Eva is so memorable because of how imperfect and incomplete all its characters and even the series itself feels, while RahXephon feels kind of meh at times because it is 'too perfect'. Eva often feels tense and ominous while RahXephon can feel meandering and blase. Again what people want out of a show is up to them so its fine if people prefer one or the other, but for my money, I much prefer the questioning and character drama of Eva.... And that gets me to the movie. I don't know if RahXephon provided any inspiration on the Eva movies, but it is a good point on how similar they are. The new Eva movies do feel much more 'perfect' than the original product...and I think that's why they have never sat well with me. I don't hate them, but they always feel off to me knowing how different they perceive and approach the central themes of Eva. Often times stories should show progression, some kind of new status quo, and while the end of RahXephon and the new Eva movies have this, it just doesn't hit as hard in my eyes... Thanks for watching!

      In some ways I think that the limitations of a craft can be a great source of charm. When we see a lot of stuff from the 90s it isn't as polished 100% of the time as some newer things might be, but that's because the technical limitations made reaching such a standard super labor intensive. It makes the really stand out and polished moments even nicer. We can see the labor in the final product and I really Love the passion we can see in this kind of animation.

    When I think of it now, I feel it has more of a "The Good Place" vibe, in a "Westworld" and "Dark City" setting. my head cannon is that "The Event" was an attempt to escape, or take control of this "World" or Hell and the after effects of the failure to escape. Example would be making Michael from "The Good Place" also forget that he is not the director.

      The extent to how aware the cast is of their current living area is a fascinating one. Shwartzwald questions the most, and is even allowed to see the truth, but he isn't fully aware, and watching everyone pull back the curtain, gives the show an ominous air that mixes really well with the nior stuff and punctuates the context of the story. Thanks for watching!

    Rahxephon is like the INFJ's version of Evangelion, which is very heavy in its whiny INFP monologues about self worth and esteem. And, this is coming from an INFJ myself. Evangelion was very heavy when it comes to the Introverted Feeling(Fi) function. Rahxephon seemed to be more focused on fostering the growth/respect for others, instead of for the self. Rahxephon was never really about the self or the psyche of the self, but placed more emphasis on understanding other people and how the world around them affects them. The main character also makes more of an effort to understand and love others, and the viewer is also left with this task when it comes to understand the symbolism this show displays. Lots of Ni(introverted function) utilized both in the show and by the viewers. It does indicate an auxillary Fe(extraverted feeling) function. This show delves deep toward themes like everlasting love and the importance of remembering the bonds you have with others. While I do think that the way Eva's plot was executed supported its main themes about self esteem and depression well, I just don't personally agree with the excess focus it has on the self. Seems very selfish to base your life solely on developing your ego and self esteem. It should, instead, be focused on understanding others and strengthening your bonds with others by caring more for their well being than you do for yourself.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 Місяць тому

      I always understood the point of Eva being people have to have a certain level of self respect and love and development if they want to form healthy bonds in order to live a good life. Most of the cast in that show are miserable because they cannot form solid bonds because their self esteem is too low and causes them to act irrationally or in ways people dislike. I don't think Eva wants to create people focused solely on themselves, but to recognize people have to build themselves up to some extent in order to establish and maintain healthy relationships with others, things that truly give life meaning. A relationship of any kind is not a simple "instant happiness card" but instead a living and dynamic construct that must be maintained and taken care of. It is a two way street that requires work from all involved parties and I think Eva says that having a solid level of self esteem is important because realistically anyone's partner cannot "self-esteem" for them. Understanding and supporting those around you of course is great, but Eva wants us to realize that doing so often requires a certain level of inner strength.

    I only fondly remember arise, Idk what to say about it lol, I had low expectations but it was higher than what was said about it. I don't like the antagonist but i like myself some flawed major even tho i think SAC one is also pretty flawed emotionally, She can become impulsive and overconfident at times eg, Her fight with that tank from SAC s1 episode 21, Shows how she was outsmarted by a low tier hacker and was going to get destroyed then u can see her ego getting hurt, Even the 2nd GIG has many instance of her character flaw, That's why i think its pretty strange when ppl say sac motoko is not flawed and really perfect, thats just inaccurate NGL. Maybe she is not physically cause she is like a war veteran and one of the smartest detective in the series, Btw SAC and 1995 are my personal favourite that's why i feel its kind of weird when ppl say that about SAC motoko ppl even rate SAC lower cause of Fanservices, I just dont get it, Those fanservices aren't even bad lol

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 Місяць тому

      Its always been really weird to me that Ghost in the Shell as a whole is something unafraid to push boundaries and try new things (kind of a core theme here) and yet some people are adamant the Major has to be the "right one". SAC's Makoto being a little arrogant is a good point you bring up and is a great example of a flaw of hers, but I think people overlook it because SAC's Major is played "cooler" I guess. Like her writing is generally a little distant, less emotional, and she's just "cool" so arrogance isn't seen as an emotional issue by some? I guess some people see another interpretation of her which expresses itself more as "uncool", but I don't see the issue. I don't think Arise is as good as SAC or the original movie (extremely high bars) but its still very fun and its version of the major is still great.

    I think as gentleman and being men for woman of class, we can all agree and meet in the middle somewhere: that ergo proxy's vision outstrips its grasp; it is indeed a dark emotional piece of art, an honest work of pure passion done as best as these artist were able, given our human limitations. Could it have been better executed in many ereas? Well of course. THIS is all i have to say for now. I have spoken, so shall it be.

    • @obscureanimememories6697

      I don't think its controversial to say Ergo Proxy is at the very least divisive or has some objective issues. I don't mind some of the concepts and lore going over my head, but I don't think that makes such things objectively ok. There are spots where the production can feel a little loose and that means more to some than others and that's fine. Taste is subjective after all. Thanks for watching!
