How to make a Wooden Longsword // Full Tutorial // Woodworking // Sword making how to
This video tutorial will guide the beginner to advanced woodworker through the entire process of making a wooden longsword. I used oak for the blade and exotic hardwoods for the handle. Tools used include: bandsaw, belt sander/ grinder, drill press, & scroll saw. This project costs under $20 for materials and is suitable for sparring in HEMA. The blade is made from oak, which is the strongest wood that is easily available. The hilt is made from a variety of exotic woods.
The sword was designed with a gothic style in mind. It has an Oakeshott XVIII blade, a gently flared cross guard, and a disc pommel.
I would suggest learning sword making for anyone interested in eastern or western martial arts, swordsmanship, fencing, practice swords, decorative pieces, cosplay, theatrical prop making, historical weaponry/ warfare.
Please be sure to subscribe to my channel for more woodworking and metal working projects and instructions. I love to build things from wood and metal and will be posting how to videos and tutorials of the things I create such as Katanas, wakizashis, tachis, gladii, longswords, arming swords, daggers, Zweihanders, rapiers and side swords.
As a Houston based artist, I use Rockler, Lowes, or less often home depot for most of my wood. I enjoy working with all kinds of woods, some common woods and some exotic woods. Not all woods are suited specifically for making swords, but sometimes for other wood crafts. Woods you might consider using in your own woodworking projects might include walnut, oak, mohogany, maple, ebony, hickory, rosewood, wenge, padauk, purple heart, yellow heart, zebrawood, beli, leopardwood, bocote, ironwood, spalted wood, cedar, pine, balsa, birch, blackwood, or redwood.
I don't do quite as much metal working or forging but I also enjoy that type of craft and will likely have some videos on that at some point. If you have a forge , hammer, an anvil, some tongs and a quench tank, you can dive into some cool metal working as well.
In future videos I may use other tools such as a table saw, lathe, or a mortising machine.
I'd also love to hear from you about suggested projects or projects you yourself have been working on.
