Why You Shouldn't Use Tap Water for Pinter Brewing | Essential Brewing Tips
There is a crazy deal on the pinter right now. Just ordered one. I'm really excited. My friend has a great cider recipe that I would like to try. Would it be possible to back sweeten in the pinter?
@@bfohl1 The only way I can think you would be able to back sweeten a cider in your Pinter, without losing the pressure, would be to use an empty hopper bottle from one of the beer kits. But it’s not something I’ve experimented with myself. 👍
Wow amazing channel and details into stats and editing and costs. Easiest sub or the year KEEP making more of these with different hop and grain blends, MAYBE buy your own grains and follow a recipe you think looks great. I’m so curious how the cost would go down buying your own grains and measuring yourself. Pleaser try this!!! You can even rate your favorite of the recipes you find online and experiment with different measurement’s and grains. so we know what you’d love best for the best price. You’d eventually have a good supply of your own grains and could experiment with making your own recipes. I can promise you EVERYONE would LOVE to see this, you’re great at being clear with the stats and data and costs. You would probably make 10-12 pints for only about $6-8 a batch
@@808JuJu Thanks for the detailed feedback. Very helpful 🍻
I just bought one of these kits and thought about doing this for the future. Thanks for making this video I look forward to seeing more of these in the future.
@@christopherestevez4857 Dividing the 40 pint kit into 4, produced a beer that was lacking in flavour. Probably best to split it into 3 for brewing in your Pinter 👍
Why do you have a washing machine in your kitchen did you need a 2nd washing machine or brits don't have washing machine rooms?
@@nightraver56 It’s very common to have a washing machine in the kitchen over here. Definitely better to have a separate room if you can afford it. House prices are crazy high. To buy a property with a separate washing/ laundry room over here, you’d need a considerable amount of money.
Very clear videos and easy to follow. I wish I saw your videos before starting my first batch in a Pinter last night! I'll be prepared for my second brew though! You got yourself a subscriber 👍🏻

Question - Did you remove the dry hop addition after fermentation, when you removed the dock? Sorry. I'm new to brewing. One of the reasons I bought a Pinter is because I only want small batches for myself and to be able to brew easily from grain.
@@01gaffer Hi, no I didn’t remove the dry hop additions after fermentation. They stayed in for the full duration of conditioning and drinking.
Have you ever tried an abbot ale clone in the past with this method at all? I’m liking this style of video where by you post up the information at given times, great work 👏👏👏👏👏
@@tonyroolze Thanks Tony. I’ve not yet tried an Abbot Ale clone but definitely would look at it when I get the chance 🍻
Great work. Moving from extract to all grain is fun. I 100% recommend figuring out your water chemistry. pH management is a must to get a good tasting mash.

@@madnlooney Haha, I have left a brew overnight before and carried on the next day. I certainly find myself doing these videos at some strange hours that’s for sure!
Very cool. The only thing I guess we cannot do is adding the dry hops later into the fermentation. Have you tried opening the pinter 2-3 days into fermentation and then adding hops?
@@amrith10 No I’ve not tried that. I think the pressure loss might prove too much. I am looking at making fresh ‘hop shots’ using an empty Pinter hop bottle. More on that in the near future!
i did this with the mangrove jacks kits. undocked it and put the hops in the dock then back on to carry on fermentation. came out ok.
@@madnlooney I suppose that is another approach. I kinda like the hop bags myself 👍

Thank you. I’m a home brewer that just bought two of these to hopefully get some friends into brewing. I had questions on that carbonation dial and the plug next to it. You answered those questions and taught me about the removable feet. Thank you Sir. It’s to bad that there isn’t a user manual for troubleshooting.
@@richardeldridge1099 Hi Richard, glad I could help. Maybe I’ll put it all in a book one day as a complete user guide 😎
cheers mate. I've only ever brewed the official pinter kits but feel like the price doesn't match the quality any more. was looking for alternatives and came across this. does the mangrove jacks kit have that 'home brew tang' taste?
@@danielbyrne470 I actually believe that most of the time when people refer to a ‘home brew tang’ or similar, it’s down to the water used and not the beer kit. MJ’s tasted legit to me. 🍻
brilliant, thanks. how would you recommend improving water quality to remove this tang? I'm up in Scotland and thought we had really good water up here
@@danielbyrne470 As far as I know, all domestic water supplied by tap is treated with chlorine. So even if the water is great quality, it’s the chlorine and chloramine that causes the issues, and off flavours. Best way to find out is do a brew using bottled water and see if you still think it has a home brew taste to it. 👍
@@PinterBeerChef thanks a lot man 👍
@@danielbyrne470 You can also buy tap water treatment to take care of the chlorine if you’d rather not be buying bottled water. But I’d recommend you still do a test with bottled water for comparison first.

What strainer was that you were using when you transferred from pot to pinter?
@@beachdiggerdetecting5569 Hello! I tend to use the Kilner wide neck funnel: amzn.eu/d/80EWPLn along with a fine mesh filter: amzn.eu/d/3dnSL7T
The equivalent sanitizer in the US is StarSan. I would have popped the tap parts into the sanitizer before reassembling the Pinter. Might mot matter very much. Shaking occasionally would be just as good as tipping the Pinter from side to side. The surfaces just need to stay wet.
@@BobZed Yes, Starsan is a good one. 👍
I'm guessing you cleaned the other part long ago? How did that go?
@@BobZed I clean the dock as soon as it is detached from a brew. I clean it out with hot water running from the tap with a little detergent. Repeat a few times, then rinse thoroughly.
If I try this do i need to buy anytiing other than the kit and hop bags? Cleaning granules and yeast included or needs ro be bought separately?
@@nimdy2012 Everything is in the kit except sanitiser. Best to buy some liquid sanitiser if you want to do alternative kits to Pinter fresh press.

@@PinterBeerChef Your very welcome the video was to the point and I enjoyed watching it!
@@alanradcliffe1 Great stuff 👍
I tried a George - it poured quite flat - not sure if it was because the room T was 18 OR it’s a faulty printer OR I kept To the 5L volume … Good to expt tho esp if you’re only pouring away £7.50 Might try it again one day but MJ next and homemade cider One day I’ll Get this right!
@@brendanfox8945 That’s a shame. At 18c fermentation takes longer. And with the 2.5g yeast provided, this would require further additional time. So, probably 2 weeks + fermentation required to get the job done. I went with room temp of 22c and 6g yeast with no issues to report. Fermentation 9 days.
Saw A&Edo brews vid - where the pressure dropped so far they had to bottle the last 5 pints. Maybe due to the fact that they had undocked inbetween to put hop pellets in rather than muslin bag them etc? Did you have enough pressure for all 10ish pints may I ask?
@@brendanfox8945 I would say there was reduced carbonation in the beer towards the end, but it was still drinkable and all ten pints dispensed no problem. It wouldn’t put me off doing it again. 👍
Great video, and prefer your hopping method to that used by A&E. Is as per the MJ instructions or an adaption of the recipe by you?
@@andywillis2870 Hi Andy, glad you liked the video. The dry hopping would normally be a late addition, which is not an option with the Pinter. So, I basically just went with the method I thought would give the best outcome. 🍻
Thanks for the info. I just ordered a Pinter for my son. There was an insane deal thru the AHA: $49, with free shipping and two free beer kits. They automatically signed me u p for a subscription to two kits per month, but I cancelled that because I knew there had to be a better way. Filtering the wort is a great tip. I think I'll tell him to filter before chilling to avoid sanitation issues.
@@BobZed Glad it was helpful. Yes, that was a great deal 🍻
Really interesting - from what you said you ordered the recipe yourself and didn't use a grain kit? How did you scale the recipe for the pinter? I'm just learning but would really like to be able to take one of the brew recipe databases - say brewfather - and have it auto-scale the recipes to order on the malt miller. Is it as simple as taking a 40 pint recipe, dividing everything by 4, and using 9 litres water, aiming for around 1 litre left at the bottom of the pan at the end, and around 5.5litres of wort in the pinter?
@@MatthewDurkin Hello! I have fallen slightly short on wort when using 9L of water a couple of times, so will probably try 9.5 or even 10L of water with my next all-grain brew. As far as scaling for the Pinter, I have found that taking a 20L recipe, dividing everything by 4 to give a 5 litre kit, THEN, add 15% to everything to make a 10 pint kit ready for Pinter. Hope this helps 🍻
@@PinterBeerChef that's great thanks. I was just playing around on brewfather and worked out how to do it there as well. Very useful to know about the water volume - I guess quite a lot is lost during the boil. I noticed that it's also much better value to make up kits this way than but then ready made, so once I've had a go with a few kits I'm keen to give this a go. Thanks for your help and great videos 👍
@@MatthewDurkin I’m glad you noticed that. Putting through your own recipes is often up to 40% cheaper than buying the equivalent pre-made kits! 😎
Just put my 2d brew of MJ on, Hop bags on the list for the next one. I'll try having them bagged, How long did you end up brewing & conditioning for?
@@madnlooney Hello! I gave it 9 days fermentation and 5 days conditioning 👍
Another great review, great channel. I’d like to try different brews through the Pinter 3 once I’ve got a few successes under my belt!
@@bigj0nny Definitely. Experimenting with different options is loads of fun 🤩

@@davidtowers3731 No worries, glad you find them helpful 👍
Hi just done my first two brews followed your instructions to the letter. Is it usual to have some bubbling from the pressure valve? Have got them both as finger tight at 5 as I can get them?
@@timclarke8775 Hello! that’s perfectly fine and a positive sign that vigorous fermentation is taking place 👍
I don’t understand how the hop oil drips into the Pinter when the Pinter is pressurised, I would expect the brew to push back into the hopper
@@RicFX The internal design of the hopper valve must be designed in a way to prevent this from happening. Maybe incorporating a one-way or similar.
Do you think a 50/50 split would work?
Yes I do. And if you did split into 2, the amount of extract would likely be adequate that you wouldn’t require any DME at all. So, perhaps just add 75g of sugar.
Thank you for making this channel. You have pretty much sold me on purchasing the Pinter3. Keep them coming. Subscribed!

@OysterBoysBrewingCo Thanks. The MJ kits look decent, so I’m looking forward to trying them out. The George’s 5L kits are worth a try too. Have you considered trying any of the Pinter range of beers?
Hi there. So what do you do to maintain the optimum condition time? Bottle them?? As you say you cant down all 10 pints at the optimum day lol. And of course as each day goes on you could continue to lose flavour? Do you recommend 5 days 2nd fermentation when bottling, or would you add an extra couple of days onto that too? Thank you
@@gdyufe Hi, the quality is more than acceptable for the time it takes to drink 10 pints, so personally, I wouldn’t try and maintain any particular ‘optimum’.
If I wanted to add in mango juice etc into the pinter mixes is that Just a matter of me adding in say a litre of mango juice into the pinter while adding in the mix and yeast?
@@gdyufe Yes, that’s right. I’d recommend that the mixture is throughly mixed first, then add your yeast. Allow an extra couple of days fermentation, because there is a lot of extra sugar in the juice to be fermented 👍
Thank you. So the pinter 3 holds about 5 litres. So 4 litres water and 1 litre mango juice, Plus the mix. Mix thoroughly and then add in the yeast
@@gdyufe Yep, that’s correct. 👍
Better check the 5L bottles before you buy if it isn’t the ones you’ve mentioned - I got home to realise that my Aldi ones contain 11mg/L - Fortunately I have access to the purest sterilised and deionised water on the planet and shall be using that from now on!
@@brendanfox8945 I think you might be getting confused between Chloride which is naturally present in fresh bottled waters with Chlorine which is added to tap water to make it safe to drink. Chloride is not an issue for brewing and can actually have a positive effect on the process.
@@PinterBeerChef excellent point I hadn’t even thought about that and I’m a science teacher!! Thanks again
