John Deere D170 Mower vs. White / 16 year old / THE HILL TEST PART.1
I'm not sure how steep your hill is without actually being there but I usually mow a hill horizontally unless it's incredibly steep and in that case I don't mow it at all, I weed it it. A mower that heavy should not capsize unless the hill is more than a 45 degree angle. I lean my bodyweight to one side for extra insurance. I've mowed steep banks on ponds with a big tractor and brush hog but people have been killed doing that but you are sitting 7 feet higher with a much narrower width to height ratio than a riding lawn mower.
My Yard-Man has the same setup as your White Outdoor. Just different color hood and design of the hood from the top. Mine is a Yard-Man 21hp 46in
Change the filter and fluid in the transaxle and clean the magnets, did it with mine and it works perfectly .
i added a weight bracket and 2 weights to go in the bracket because the tires spin out on steep hills without it. Also if your drive belt is not tight enough and good quality it will slip. I have a S 170 and it does pretty good up hills. You need also to shift your weight on the seat to the highest side to give traction to that wheel.
It sounds like the drive belt was slipping. But it's also scalping, the decks too low.
not sure if the deck hit that time , but I could take the deck off and it wouldn't make it. If I mow low I watch and raise the deck accordingly. I still have bothe mowers , but I use a Cub XT3 60" deck ( it will climb a hill but the cut isn't great , and I am not real big on the electric deck raise-er-upper ...hahaa) Thanks for the reply.... I made this video a few years ago....I am having a new drive belt put on THIS week ! I will make a video of it to report back. Thanks Again....
@@thenatureboy11 Id watch the update. Cool that you still it running.
check it out, this guy made it up the hills with his S100. starts at about 25:00 in this video ua-cam.com/video/jK7h1VMl7uA/v-deo.html
Drive belt has stretched. Also check your drive pulleys for excessive wear
sorry if i havent kept up on all replys , but just to make it easier , this mower was picked up by the local J.D.. dealership , serviced , with them checking over tran / their sticker behind the seat on body , they said thats just the way it is , nothing can do about it. they are located within 2 miles of my house. j.d. mower wont pull hill with mower deck in up position and disengaged. i still have both mowers , i still use the white to mow inclines , the j.d. for flat areas .. .its a sad mower ! i had planned on trading it this year , and money got tight...see what happens.
this D105 can go up hills with a big fat man ua-cam.com/video/52LXMo0qBM4/v-deo.html Tell your John Deere dealer they're full of shit. Your transmission probably just needs to be taken apart, cleaned out, resealed, and refilled with synthetic 5W50 oil. check the drive belt too and the drive pulley on the top of the transmission. The splines on the drive pulley might be stripped and if they are, you'll need to replace the drive pulley. You'll probably need to find a small engine mechanic to do this because those John Deere assholes designed the fucking mower so that only a mechanic with the right skills, tools, and equipment can service the transmission. For the average homeowner, the transmission is unserviceable. They do that deliberately to get you to buy a new mower shortly after the warranty expires. fuckers...
Like everything else today is made much cheaper. The K46 transmission on this D170 literally failed.
The drive belt is slipping. My D110 did this when I bought it brand new; it wouldn't even make it up the driveway. Thankfully JD came and got it and fixed it.
this D170 made it up the hill ua-cam.com/video/4nBiyJWe2uk/v-deo.html what's up with your mower today? still running?
Should any rider make it up a hill like that? What should be the minimum I should be looking for? Thanks!
@@mct8888 just do like the guy did in this video. compare it to another tractor. if an older cheaper tractor can make it up the hill, then a newer more expensive tractor should also be able to make it up the hill. if it can't, it's either defective or it's a fucking piece of shit to begin with.
@@mrbubetube hahaha ok ok. Thanks! 😂
you said the transmission does better when it's cold. have you tried changing the transmission oil? www.tufftorqservices.com/instance1EnvEEdefault/FlatHTML/TechInfo/ttcoil/pdfs/OIL%20CHANGE%20FREQUENCY.pdf
You get it fixed yet?
Simple fix...replace the drive belt
when did you start using that mower on that hill? Did you try it early in that mower's life like less than 50 hours, or did you first try it after 120 hours?
i have mowed that hill since '75. and have mowed it "hot" , mowed it "cold" , mowed it "early" and "late" , mowed it "on a full moon" , and "jumped on one leg 5 times , flapped my arms like a bird , while singing "Amazing Grace " ......conclusion is "That model John Deere is JUNK "....and i bought it new , still have it AND the White mower , and The White mower mows better by far
@@thenatureboy11 check out this video. this guy says he was having the same problem and when he checked the transaxle oil level it was fine BUT he discovered it was filled with a lighter oil than it was supposed to have. Apparently the K46 transaxles aren't always filled with the proper oil at the factory! ua-cam.com/video/sxfWmMEU3YQ/v-deo.html
@@thenatureboy11 Here's another guy who says he discovered John Deere sometimes doesn't put the correct oil in the K46 transaxle, causing it to fail. ua-cam.com/video/LPZEPNTfvyw/v-deo.html
Change the trans belt I have this same mower I mow steeper hills than that here in Wichita falls texas and my d170 has 375 hrs and goes up hills just fine change the belt it may do better my dealer told me that they have been swapping out those transmissions with better ones cause they have had issues the mower being a deere ain't your issue it's either the trans depending on the year or u need a new belt
here's a 40 year old 7hp John Deere 110 having no trouble at all going up a hill while hauling a load of wood. ua-cam.com/video/pCV-EH27nqk/v-deo.html and this is a 20 year old 18hp John Deere 322 mowing up a hill no problem ua-cam.com/video/KhtaxTaJIuU/v-deo.html
Looking at what Rod has posted about it, it sounds like he is hitting high center, I believe he's talking about a ground clearance issue.
this guy made it. how much do you weigh? 400 pounds? ua-cam.com/video/52LXMo0qBM4/v-deo.html
You can hear the drive belt slipping.
this video is about it making up an incline. it wont make it up a hill, ask your local J.D. dealer , THEY will tell you this video is correct. the whole mower slips....backwards when its going up a hill. ( not my first rodeo , I maual adjust deck when mowing )
I have about 100 hours on the D130 I bought in 2013 and my club has about 140 hours on the D110 they bought about a month before I bought mine, both are hydrostatic transaxles. I have 2 fairly steep hills in my back yard I have no trouble with, my club has a hill which isn't as steep as mine but runs about 1/4 mile, no trouble going up it either. I don't need to ask my dealer since I have personal experience with two different hydrostatic John Deere's, neither has a problem with hills, they both have the same Tuff Torque hydrostatic transaxle as yours.
I think it may be the fact that the D170 has a 54 inch deck, the extra weight has gotta be the issue. I'm not an expert but that's what I think it is.
I would definitely stick with the White mower, but in case it does ever break down, which, I'm pretty sure it won't because I've heard those old White mowers are INCREDIBLY reliable. Just in case it does though, or you want to replace the Deere, I recommend getting a different Deere with a smaller deck. See if cutting down the weight helps.
No ...the smaller , White deck probably weighs the same. Better product. I can remove them and weigh them.
It doesnt make the hill on highest deck setting.
You are scalping at the top and bridging the machine , raise the deck a notch or 2 as you go over the hump! OR its your motion drive belt.
Try putting it on idle and take your fat ass off the tractor ua-cam.com/video/ZHl5QmYambE/v-deo.html
try this with your white tractor ya little bitch! ua-cam.com/video/1pgGGvlr33k/v-deo.html
why won't it get up the hill? lack of horsepower??? I find that hard to believe with 26hp. Are the wheels spinning? Is the transmission slipping or locking up? Is the mower deck catching on the ground? Did you have enough beer in the beer holder? Have you sent this video to John Deere and asked them to come out and test your hill?
Cause its not well made
or maybe the rider weighs 400 pounds
280 and 6'3" , I am NOT a lil' fella @@mrbubetube
@@mrbubetube I think your missing the point , the smaller mower pulled me up the hill with no problem. or did You just want to know what I weigh.
drive belt slipping, my old 97 murray lawn tractor used to walk a wheely going up hills...never quit climbing....NEVER BUY A JOHN DEERE FROM LOWES OR HOME DEPOT....ALWAYS BUY AT THE JD IMPLEMENT STORES....THEYLL WARRANTY IT
Red Blue40 this John Deere was delivered from the local John Deere dealership located 1 mile from where this video was taken....and was checked out by them as well....thats why i made the video....the series is junk
I agree with you, my hill is about 10 to 12 degree incline at 20 feet long. Everybody I talk too have the same remarks, don' buy. I have 12 hours on the mower, I'm sure glad I didn't buy the snow blower! I had a old Bolan's, pushed snow, tiller, and a aerator never had a problem, engine started blowing oil (should have got it. Fixed).
