If you increase air pressure while keeping your lips the same you will increase the amplitude of vibration, not the speed. That means loudness will increase, but not the pitch. In the same way, a guitar string will not vibrate faster by striking it harder. You need to tighten it or reduce the vibrating length (that's what you do when pressing it against the frets) If you want your lips to vibrate faster you need to tighten them, no matter what these experts say. Physics is not what you feel when playing after you developed a strong embouchure.
It is very common to see pro players saying air pressure is all you need. They just seem to forget the big amount of hours they spent to build a strong embouchure in order to feel it relaxed when playing. Everytime they say not to train your embouchure thery are just not being true. Embouchure strength is a essential part of the game.
Isn't this the same as "Maynard Ferguson protocol"?
Thank you

James Morrison is their any difference between wedge mouth piec and a regular 3C mouth piece? Does, a wedge mouth piece help you too play higher notes?
I have been playing for awhile, and I have that same problem with high notes.thank you I'll try your idea.
Awesome! Thank you.
Muito obrigado pelo video! E ajudou demais. Obrigado, obrigado!
Guilty guilty!!! Great explanation, Thank you Mr Morrison!
LOL - range on the bass trombone means the low notes. Just saying.... (grin)
Me, a piano player: *_Interesting_*
You should have been the dad on Bluey.
Thank you.God bless you
Tremendo maestro mi. Saludos. Para ese gran profesor saludos desde santo domingo república dominicana siempre activo y bendiciones
As a sax player this is actually quite eye opening. Playing overtones on saxophone you're supposed to avoid squeezing the reed. This way of looking at trumpet seems to explain it: you want the depth of sound from the reed freely vibrating, so instead of using your embouchure you increase your air speed!
Happily I am long acquainted with and practised in ‘belly breathing’* ie count 6 inhale slowly and calmly for count of 7 hold, & then smoothly exhale using your now lifting / raising diaphragm for a count of eight. I use the same technique before the effort stage of lifting a weight during weights muscle strengthening. I also use it (with engaging the abs ie core) for proprioceptive balance awareness and execution. Also employ it when doing rehab neck exercises especially neck-chin-head retraction-extension. Finally, during those pesky tv 📺 ads, hit mute, then do last exercise incorporating belly breathing O
Thanks Aussie, from a Kiwi across the Deetch / Dutch. The next time I take my horn outta its case, will literally be the second time. So discovering you so early in my brass section career is serendipity to the max. I’ve found the ideal teacher at the ideal juncture. I commit myself to aiming to be the ideal student
In linguistics phonology, we would term ‘buzzing’ ‘voiced bilabial fricative’
Perfectly explained. Obrigado grande mestre Morrison 🙏🏽
Excellent!
That will be embarrassing in a glass of water 😂😂😂
If I was a trumpet player I would totally give up if JM was my teacher. He's just too good.
This looks like gold. Need to try tomorrow (because it’s 11pm and I don’t want to scare anybody)
i play trumpet & one day ill be as good as james morrison the problem is it will take bout a million years
I played trumpet for over 12 years and never knew this before! I even had several great trumpet instructors, but increasing range never worked for me. My range plateaued senior year of high school and never got better, regardless of how much practice I did. I always knew there was something fundamentally wrong with my techniques/principles but no one could tell me what it was until now. Too bad it's after midnight where I'm at otherwise I'd try this out right now lol. Can't wait to start practicing again
I love this guy
Video is so good
ROFL 20 minute warm-up heck I am done.
Thanks Phil for posting these, really good guidance.
This is the only video that can be watched my an absolute beginner or an expert
this the type of teacher that won't let you play your trumpet until you know how to clean it
master great .....
James Morrison is a genius!
You are remarkable. I am an old-frustrated trumpet player. Probably got the wrong instruction when I was younger. But the range and endurance was a problem. To late now. I enjoy your technique.
its never too late. I just got a bunch better, learning this now, after playing for 20 years. It's all good fun!
True, but then someone plops a piece of sheet music in front of you and then you can sort of figure out a crude approximation of the rhythm, but no idea what the melody is, so then you toot each note to find out what pitch it is and then tie the notes to the rhythm and then slowly you start discovering what that tune is about.
These videos are helping a lot thanks
As a horn player for 6 years… let’s just say I think I’ve got the pre-hearing down 😂
Thank you Mr Morison's, I Love to here you play jazz, I'm practicing Jazz scales,I want to be the best that I can in the name of Jesus Christ
Come on, if it were this simple everyone would be playing double Cs.
I had James’ DVD until I loaned it to a ‘friend’ and never saw it again so thanks for posting.
There's a reason he/she didn't give it back...
Excellent
