Do Teleconverters Affect Image Quality?
Переглядів 2,3 тис.2 роки тому
How much do teleconverters affect image quality. I test the Sony 1.4x TC and the Sony 2.0x TC on 3 of Sony's most popular wildlife telephoto lenses, the 400 2.8 GM, the 200 - 600 G, and the 100 - 400 GM.

Love the photography , great photos!!!
Really need to get out in my kayak this year with the camera
I thought this was about low light
great work!!!
Is there a way to put the shift settings into some cardinal terms. The camera asks for an ordinal scale 1 -10. What does that mean ? Is 1, 1% of the distance, 10% of the distance ? a particular mm distance ? Seems to me you need to know this to determine the number of shots. Comment ?
great opportunity.
My Sigma Art 28mm f1.4's sharpest resolution is f5.6 & i bought a D850 this week..ill be using 28mm at F5.6 & focus stacking. 16-35mm f4 @ f5.6 also.
Great footage! Last year I got my first spar on video. It was so awesome. Thanks for sharing!
I use a hiking pole on each side of the chair to lift it off my head so I can turn without moving the blind. Awesome piece of gear if you are going any distance from your vehicle.
My wife and I tried your setup on our kayaks. We found it a bit tippy. Our kayaks must be a bit narrower. We found free handing it worked best for us, especially for birds in flight. We gave it our best, but we like it freehand. Thanks for the tip. Good luck. Thanks
Almost that time of the year!
Thanks. It really helped. Appreciate and wish you always good luck finding the right animals to shoot.
I find that my 2x teleconverter with my 70-200 GM II is probably the best combination. The 5.6 aperture is pretty good especially in well lit scenes. Any other lens other than the primes I think would not be worth it.
I appreciate the review. All the images seemed excellent with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters on all three lenses, particularly on the 400mm GM and 200-600mm. The 1.4x teleconverter proved especially effective.
Amazing Video! Wildlife photography is such a challenging task. I'm trying to do it myself and I commend you on how effortless you make this look! Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing!
You can do it! Thanks for watching!!
Very simple and detailed
What is that device you're using as an auxillary LCD viewer?
I use a Atomos Ninja now, that was a cheaper version of one.
I’m getting into photography and I’ve been curious about these. My only comment here is that our screens aren’t really able to see any significant difference in clarity here. As an absolute beginner really, I don’t see any difference even though I know the f stops and amount of light would be a huge factor.
The 1.4x works well on compatible lenses. On the 400 prime, it is barely noticeable.
Your video was very helpful. I have been debating to buy teleconverter for my Sony zoom telephoto lenses and now I decided not to. To my eyes, cropped view looked sharper even at the same ISO. Who knows what the images will look like once ISO goes up with teleconverters.
Glad it was helpful!
Question about your set-up. I guess the tripod is just to hold THE CAMERA still relative to the kayak, but I imagine the kayak is often not very steady? Please comment. Also, does that set-up raise your center of gravity in a way that makes the kayak tippy? have you ever gone over?
Yes the tripod is just to hold the camera relative to the kayak. The kayak can be very steady on a lake with no wind. The center of gravity is still low enough as not to have a great effect on balance. Fortunately I have never tipped over. I carry insurance on all my camera gear.
I found my 70-200 GM2 to pair with the 2x teleconverter quite well - the degradation is minimal and the resulting 140-400 f/5.6 is useful. However the IQ suffers greatly with the 2x TC on my 200-600, as you show.
So anxious to bring my cameras on a kayak...living vicariously through your video til I work up the courage:)
I've been using one for a few years now. I did however, modify the front window to my liking. But, really excellent for ground shooting.
This is probably one of the best vlog+birds+cinematic feel+best audio vibe music combinations I’ve seen in quite a while. Very Nice Work! I’m definitely going to be a new subscriber and watcher.
Wow, thank you very much, I appreciate it!!
If you went further, you'd have seen some very tall waterfalls. The tallest is about 100 feet tall, according to elevation readings on Google Earth.
Really informative tips Steve. Thanks
Thanks!
what lifetime kayak is it please?
It’s an Emotion Envy. Thanks for watching!
I want to do this, where I live there are many lakes, I am new to photography and bought some excellent equipment and time to learn. Great inspiration thank you.
Affinity- SO MUCH BETTER FOR STACKING !!!!!

Nice! Photo days in the forest of Maine are my favorites. Thanks Man!
Thanks very much!
How ya travelling mate? Been a while. Cheers to ya.
Doing okay, thanks! Cheers to you as well.
Have a water reservoir up the street from my house probably about 3 miles. And I get beautiful egrets and great blue herons. They can be a little cumbersome because I have to shoot from the side of the road to get the birds and usually I have to use my rf800 mm. But I've gotten some rather good pictures these last few years and it's right up the street so I can go all the time. Recently I was cracking up and walking away in this beautiful eagle fluoride pass my head and normally I would grab my camera but I had missed the shot. Lo and behold he went down and made a u-turn and came directly back in my direction. So I grabbed my Canon R5 with my 800 at-ats to it and started bursting away 20 frames a second. I got some prices pictures and absolutely and thrilled that we now have an evil in our neighborhood. Funny thing is I live 20 miles outside of Charlotte North Carolina and usually don't get Eagles here. I do live in the countryside of Mooresville North Carolina so we have lots of deers, turkeys, coyotes, foxes, and all types of birds. Just today I got a beautiful owl and a hawk in the same Tree in my yard! That's not everyday though and it is rare but it does happen. Thank you for your upload I really appreciate the content
That is so cool that you have access to all those birds so close. We have lots of eagles up here but not always good opportunities for good shots
@@stevecookphotography unfortunately they only come out on rare occasions BUT I'm always in the look out!!! 😉
My only complaint is the birds like turkey key on movement and this would definitely scare them off.
Yes, it certainly is not a perfect solution, however it is very portable. Thanks for watching!
Nice shots.
Thanks very much!
Great video and useful info, thank you!
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks so much for watching!
Great heron images. Nice work

I carry a small Tough 5 for the wet shots.
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome video sir, when i was living in Co the rut was always a great time. The bugling is a really interesting call lol
It's great to hear it echoing off the hills! Thanks so much for watching!
Excellent video and photos! However, my cat didn’t know quite what to make of the elk bugling sound, so funny🤣
My dogs howled the first time they heard it last year when I was edting another video! They are used to it now, LOL!
Fantastic video! And some awesome images! There are about 3 or 4 images that are definitely award winning shots!
Thanks very much Steve! It was one of the best weeks I have ever had shooting wildlife with all the different conditions.
Super shots of the Elk!
Thanks very much!
How do you get f/4 from that 200-600mm lens?
I was shooting with my 400 2.8 with a 1.4 teleconverter. I was using the 200-600 for video only on another camera body.
You guys (In America) are extremely lucky with birds. You can get to them in open so close. This year I was in Henderson Swamp LA for couple of hours and got plenty of heron shots. Blue , Great(white) and snowy. In here where I live (central Europe) those birds are extremely shy and vigilant. I cannot approach them in open. I have to wait hours in silence in the hide for them to come to me and even then, even slightest movement or sound may scare them.
It is very interesting how birds/animals acclimate differently to humans in various regions.
