Did u project render passes on 3d models?
Yeah I did, but also some were projected on cards
how can a cgi called a "3d matte painting" when they all just CGI itself? 3d
I think 3d matte painting is more to 3d element in the background. The most common matte painting just uses a 2d element. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The left structure would typically be a 3d projection at that distance, feel the card a little too much. Also note the black levels around the bottom of the same card / element, aim to ensure the black match the plate.
Try to respect real world scale as much as possible to ensure more accurate sense of world space and camera move.
