A recap of what I listened to last week. I went on a wild goose chase in search of Strawbs' Deadlines on vinyl, an album I could swear I had in the collection, but couldn't track down. That led me to some finds: an early Strawbs LP, Dylan on vinyl, Bruno Walter, Eugene Ormandy, Barry Manilow, a Grants Christmas album, and Christoph Eschenbach's Mahler 6th on SACD.

    Washing Machine is not my fave Sonic Youth album but I have fond memories about it because it came out the year I graduated high school (over here we call it "junior college"). I went to their concert a few years before I got conscripted. They made it all the way to the Far East. The first incarnation of Foo Fighters opened for them, and they played in an arena that had since been torn down and rebuilt (they love to do these things in Singapore). I had to go because I missed REM because of my exams. So the nice thing about all these noise rock bands is that you can buy the cheap seats, sit at the back, rock out and still retain your hearing. Sonic Youth are what they are... it was a good concert, they recreated everything on the album pretty well. Great experience. Seems like yesterday, where did all the time go? Sonic Youth, I think, has a pretty good Chinese / Japanese following. I think some of the traditional Chinese music has some atonality and we just pick it up, we're used to it already. And who's not to say that they that maybe they were popping by NYC's Chinatown, heard some Chinese orchestra and it didn't influence them in some way?

    Cool cd music haul. In my youth I used to listen to Sonic Youth quite a bit, that Day Dream Nation and Goo are the best. The John Prine cd is his second album. I’m a huge Prine fan with all but two live lps in my collection, all on vinyl. He is one awesome artist that doesn’t get mentioned at all in the VC. ?? Not much country Americana ever does. I used to have that Frank Z on tape and listened to it constantly. Now however I find Zappa’s music either too odd/eccentric or very immature and juvenile. That whole 22 CD’s cost less than a cup of Starbucks lol 😆.

      Well perhaps saying Americana does not get much love on the VC may not be completely correct. The only CDs I buy these days are classical music to fill out my collection and pick up cheap symphonic cycles or collections by composers/conductors/musicians I like. The medium has never mattered to me all that much. When CDs arrived, I got rid of my LPs because I was sick of how crappy the quality control was on them. People sentimentalize vinyl records these days, but I think it’s mostly nostalgic and reactionary: I think CDs - and really, digital - were a vast improvement, both in sound and convenience. I now own a little Onkyo bookshelf system that plays CDs and streams from Bluetooth, and it sounds spectacularly good to my nearly 70-year-old ears. (My car also only streams these days.) So, I’m not fussy about the medium as long as I’m surrounded by music. BTW, that John Prine CD is his third record, and it’s a minor gem. It’s also the album where he first showed his slacker tendencies and his strong desire to do things his way, traits that served him well the rest of his life. Enjoy!

    re CDs....I think about how I might want to give up streaming to save money, so I want to keep essential CDs. Plus the albums that are available on streaming can come and go. And the streaming versions of older songs are sometimes rerecorded so that the artist gets the royalties they don't get from having the original played. I haven't checked recently but two examples were Lobo's "I'd love you to want me" and Roger Whittaker "The Last Farewell" -- a couple guilty pleasures of mine. I want the artist/songwriter to get royalties...but I also want the original!

    • @songtripping4165
      @songtripping4165 Місяць тому

      All important factors. I like that the artists get some royalties, albeit measured in micropennies. I don't like the come and go nature of streaming. Things pop in and out of the library randomly.

    I haven't listened to that Robbie Robertson in its entirety in ages. It has about 3 or 4 incredible songs, but some other songs I really can't stand. So I usually just listen to selected songs on streaming. Yes, his first solo album. Broken Arrow is my favorite song. Love Steeleye Span - they were still at it recently at least. I don't have all of their albums, but always looking for good copies. I have the Mofi of All Around My Hat. Maddy Prior is one of the great singers and interpreters of folk music. Great finds. Those first CD releases of Randy Newman albums were really well done. 12 Songs was one of the first CDs I ever bought and I remember how much better it sounded than other CDs of classic albums that were coming out.

    Great update! Wow, congrats on finding the gatefold of Deadlines. That really does look fantastic. It's on the list! I've never ever seen it in a store or record fair, so I might have to go online as well. I'm sure people have ranked Hipgnosis covers...but I wonder how often this gets included. It has gotta rank pretty high. Getting more in to Jethro Tull is on my list of things to do. I've gotten into specific albums a lot in the past, but never their whole classic catalog. I have the little 33-1/3 book about Avalon by Simon Morrison, which is fascinating. I've had several versions of In the Court of the Crimson King over the years, including a picture disc CD that was stolen in 1999. Up until recently all reissues used a later generation of the tapes. But, as seems to be a common occurrence , the originals were discovered and the very latest reissues are from those. I have yet to get one of those. My go-to is the 40th anniversary CD/DVD-Audio boxset from 2009. And I found the 1982 Mofi LP a few years ago...which was a bit disappointing sound-wise, but pretty rare nonetheless. Certainly an album ingrained in my psyche ever since listening to my brother's reel-to-reel recording off the radio over...and over...and over. There's a great King Crimson documentary on Netflix. Highly recommended.

    You know I think I know why I listened to Burning for You and Deep Cuts more than Deadlines back in the day. It's because Deadlines came out at the same time as the A&M "Best of Strawbs". So for the year or two when Burning for You and Deep Cuts were the latest albums, I didn't have much to compare them to, not having explored the back catalog yet. But I probably bought that Best of compilation around the same time as Deadlines, so they were competing for my listening time. And as great as Deadlines is, I'm sure it struggled to compete with "Hero and Heroine", etc. Maybe that's another reason Deadlines struggled in the marketplace. Given the choice, buyers chose the Best Of.

    You are correct to focus on this record. For me, all of Springsteen’s albums through Tunnel of Love have great stuff on them, though like most artists, his best stuff is early on. This record and the Seeger Sessions represented a short reprise of his early energy and, yes, magic. Lyrics aren’t quite up to the early standard, but are very good. Radio, Girls, You’ll Be Comin’ Down, and Terry’s Song are the highlights. As far as the mastering goes, it was Bob Ludwig, who did most of his records. So these were likely conscious choices. I always saw the muddier mix and in-your-face sound as Springsteen recognizing that he just didn’t have the fireworks of his youth anymore, but still wanted the blast, and gave himself a push to get there.

    I'm in the group that says the whole album is political. It's a perfect outgrowth of The Rising. Both albums layer political songs with personal anthems. Love, loneliness, terror, betrayal. Last to Die is both about the death of love as well as an echo of John Kerry's remark about Vietnam--a dark mistake that led to violence at home and abroad. Magic is all a political response to Bush gaslighting. Trust nothing. Same rifts are widening at this very moment.

    As a huge Springsteen fan but someone with zero knowledge of 'loudness', could you explain what the fact that it's 'loud' matter? Wouldn't you just turn the volume down? Serious question, not being a dick. Loved your video!

    • @songtripping4165
      @songtripping4165 Місяць тому

      Thanks for the question! Loudness in this context relates to how the music has been mixed and mastered. Engineers use tools like compressors and limiters to crunch dynamic range and then crank the overall volume, so even when the music is at lower volumes it sounds loud. If you're listening in headphones such music can quickly become fatiguing. Not a technical explanation, I'm afraid, but I hope that helps a little!

    • @FromTheRightAngle
      @FromTheRightAngle Місяць тому

      @@songtripping4165 Thanks for the explanation! It seems like a contradiction to say something can be played at a low volume but still sound loud.... so I will do a bit more reading to see if I can make it make sense to me :) Thanks again!

    • @PhilSmithRHR
      @PhilSmithRHR Місяць тому

      @@FromTheRightAngle The objection to “loudness” is that all the sounds are pushed up, so there are fewer dynamic contrasts in the music. It is more noticeable in music that has both quiet and loud passages. To me the production sound of this album is typical of Brendan O’Brien: see also Mirrorball by Neil Young and Pearl Jam.

    I just started revisiting Magic this year and it’s become one of my favorites. I don’t really mind loudness of the mix/master (although I’ve never listened on a real HiFi system), and I think the production has aged much better than all the E Street Band albums since Born in the USA, except for probably Letter To You. Also it helps that the album is concise - no need for a 1 hr 10 min album! Great review!!

    Love Eschenbach, for one main reason. In his first season with the Philadelphia Orchestra, 2003-2004, and the inaugural year of the orchestra in the new Kimmel Center, he featured many Olivier Messiaen symphonic works. Massive, often very long, meditative pieces. That had to piss a bunch of people off because it is not what you would call standard repertoire! But I was thrilled. I also think it's cool that he's a piano virtuoso. The highlight of the season for me was his performance of the Quartet for the End of Time with him on the piano and principal members of the orchestra. I have the Eschenbach/Philly SACD of a Tchaikovsky symphony. Would love to find more of those.

    Isn't bubblegum a bit of a reaction to the late-60s seriousness and a throwback to the 50s? Sugar Sugar is as catchy and trite as Splish Splash, etc. but to me, is a more interesting song. Bubblegum could take the same simple fun ambitions of 50s teenage songs and add a touch more depth just by being created in the post-Sgt Pepper world.

    Glad other people noticed - seriously weird duff mix? Maybe time constraints... hard to imagine. Some appalling tunes too. Supermarket? Few others. Pete? Was that on this. Girls too very weak, back of the draw numbers saved for Contract fulfilment. Sheesh. Prince had several of these. The 3 cd set!? was hysterical. Just to get out of the obligations. Then renegotiate.

    Devils & Dust's sound quality is the worst. Needs a remix and remaster in my opinion. It's not limited to the proper level and during Leah, which I think lacks compression and some EQ, oversaturates and almost clips. I have no idea how that slipped like that. Amazing I've never seen that Jimmy Webb songbook album before. On the must-find list! Appreciate the Khatia Buniatishvili tip -- I'd not heard of her, but sounds right up my ally. Wasn't Face Dances the first Kenny Jones album? I think that made it a tough one to like.

      Yes, Ace Records UK has an awesome series of songbook CDs. I have several of them. There's loads of Khatia on UA-cam to sample. Yes, you're right. Face Dances was Kenny Jones' first with the Who. I can't believe I didn't mention that on the video! I'm more accepting of his drumming now. Back in the day, he was in a no win situation. Nobody can sound like Keith Moon! I believe Pete Townshend's first solo album overlaps with Face Dances, and I actually think that's the better album!
