I did a video on this knife and came to this same realization. I ended up taking it to zero degrees and then convexed it. It's actually a very good budget blade for wood carving. I don't like the original grind, but it's really easy to reprofile . I'd actually like to see Ganzo use their D2 or 14C28N on this knife . Also, if they actually extended the tang and made a kydex sheath, they'd be a huge seller. Considering the Benchmade Puukko is discontinued, the door is wide open for Ganzo to make that thing better.

I've seen pictures of sheath modification of moving the retention stud over down the leather about a full stud distance away take care of the retention part and you don't have to cut another hole in the strap where it snaps over the stud, so it doesn't show the modification when closed. I have this same knife and I still haven't decided on what to do about it yet but I am going to have to sharpen mine. I think for the spine, I'm going to use a card scraper burnisher to burnish the spine myself and maybe that might help with throwing sparks, haven't tried it yet though. I don't want to have to buy another sheath for it because it feels like such a waste of what seems like really good quality leather, I'd rather modify what it came with and make use of it. Just thought I'd share what I've seen others do already that fixed the problem. Last thing I'd mention about mine: I don't have AC in my house, just open up the windows for air at night and close them up when it starts to get warm for the day, and it's fine. But the humidity lately has been going between %55-70 and the knife, stored in the sheath, has been flash rusting. I've been using a Sandflex fine grit sand block (it's kinda like a grit impregnated rubber) to knock off the rust and does so without affecting the factory finish at all. I'm currently looking around for ways to treat the metal to where I won't have to deal with flash rust too much but not sure what would be best yet. I did wash the knife off one time so far when I first got it, and the wood handle scales have raised the grain. I didn't soak it in water, didn't leave it in water at all, and I didn't leave water on it - it was just washed and rinsed in the sink, and the dried immediately afterwards. So, I'm going to have to sand the handle scales to knock off the splintery fibers to keep them from poking my hand, and I'm going to have to treat the wood. I have thought about treating the raw side of the leather sheath on the insides as well. Might use Obenaufs for the leather and some boiled linseed oil for the handle scales. If you find a way to replace the rivets with the screws like the other BPS knives use, let us all know! :)

Sdokedc is company like eafengrow etc so without PMI test or at least proper edge retention we don't know what steel it is.

Update? This just started happening to my wife's Outback.

I will stick with mora. The mora robust in carbon is a hell of a knife. I like puukko style knives and if you want a good bushcraft knife on the cheap, then mora is the ticket. That way, you could buy the Eldris, kansbol, robust and maybe even the garberg for the money that benchmade costs.

The Benchmade every time. Excellent knives made 100% in the USA with one of the best lifetime warranties in the game. That pukko is awesome and I like the way they do their 3v. It’s a little softer which is what I prefer on a hard use fixed blade.

Benchmade discontinued the Puuko in 2023.

I do not have the Izula (yet) but I just got my second Eldris. While I have no doubt that if it came down to an all out destruction test (like Joe X does on his channel) the Izula would last a bit longer than the Eldris, I can state categorically that the little Mora can work WAY above what you'd think its level would be. First off, the handle is ridiculously comfortable. I carved a tremendous amount of wood with the Eldris and never got a complaint from my hands. In addition, we all know the toughness rep of 1095 overall, and Esee 1095 in particular. What many don't know is that Mora uses Sandvik's 12C26 in most of their stainless (apart from the Garberg) which is such a tough stainless steel that a lot of machete companies use 12C26 to make the long, thin bladed machetes. It's tougher than you'd ever think a stainless steel would be. The Izula is a great backup knife. However, I have no qualms putting my trust in my little Swedish knives as my bet-my-life backup.

Menards has a smokeless fire pit the same size as mesa for substantially less

I bought one off AliExpress. Really like it for backpacking/hiking. Don't need a big blade for that and the handle is sufficiently long and comfortable

Just pull down on the survival kit hard, it will pop off. So will the plastic ring with the leather loop attached

Everybody’s greatest criticism of this knife is the sheath and how easily the knife can be pulled out. which has nothing to do with whether the knife can fall out . the last time I checked most of my knives were vertical being worn and I’ve never had a knife fall out vertically even more so with the dangler on it. quite frankly, I think these criticisms for the most part are simply made up. I’ve never had a knife fall out in a vertical carry, whether it was a belt, knife attached or on a dangler.

Nice review, my friend. I enjoy reviews after guys have obviously actually used the piece of equipment. Far too often the UA-cam "reviews" are just unboxing videos showing brand new products and the dude reading some marketing bullet points LOL. I like to see actual use. You can't ever go wrong with any ESSE knife. Quality stuff. Sadly I don't currently own any myself. I'm using an Ontario Knife Company model in a very similar role that you describe using your ESSE 5. I mainly just baton wood with it. It rides in my box next to an ax and a chainsaw LOL.

Yeah, supporting people who are stealing other people's designs is unethical.

It literally takes 2 minutes to start a fire and you don't need even half of that much tinder. You're outside guy but your fire starting skills are kind of weird and I'm a chick from Queens play the fire at no point needs to be spilling over the rain you started that like you're starting a bonfire or a campfire and that is absolutely not necessary at all. This is for hand warming or ambience but not a cook stove

DC53 is a little better than D2 in every way.

Mine came razor sharp right out of the box. All I did was strop it .

I had the same issues; thus, I returned it. The second I purchased worked fine as far as throwing sparks and leather sheet retention

Put a pebble or two in the container with the eggs and shake it... it will help beat the eggs up.. tried this a few times before. 👍

I've had an Eldris since 2018 and I just don't love it. It carries bigger than it is and feels smaller than it is in use. I find myself reaching for a folder or my Companion. The Izula 2 has been on my radar for years, but I have never pulled the trigger. That said, your SDOKEDC has me thinking in another direction, lol. Anyway, off to check out more videos. Keep up the good work, it is apricated.

I’m a huge fan of this knife, but as usual Benchmade has shortchanged us with the sheath. I have never yet seen a decent sheath from Benchmade, and it’s kind of infuriating at the prices they charge. As for this knife, I’ve paired it with my Bushcraft 162 after replacing their sheaths and they are absolutely amazing in the woods. I use the Puukko as a neck knife and it is extremely versatile for small tasks, while the 162 is a wood processing monster that can get a fire prepped and going in no time.

feathersticks yes baton no doesnt have enough mass if you are gonna skin an animal or fiellet with it id just keep it for that, that being said dc53 is beast for knives if its quality crafted.

Thanks for the review! It seems to me that it's actually not bad that there is a cheap alternative to the original. In any case, true fans will always choose the original. But for example, in our country, sellers ask $180 for an original knife, which is 2 times more expensive than the one on bladehq. Perhaps it’s not worth having a knife lying around in a box of fishing tackle, so I’ll definitely choose a Chinese clone

So I’m going to be honest I really don’t have a problem with buying overseas products when it fits Now esee kinda came up with a good design here with making a outdoor beefed up paring knife but then they gave it a thick stock and soft heat treat at 57-59 Where’s these guys jumped onboard and made their own interpretation with some micro changes to design But they used a better steel and more importantly they ran that steel at what they’re claiming to be 60-61 much much better and you get it at a quarter the price Esee could give it to us at probably half what they charge but because they have a big name now they charge what they think we will pay for that name Na the value is in the clone in this instance like I said no brand loyalty here I’ll take the better knife at the better price

You can turn the sheath around and stick the Eldris handle into the socket(with a nice satisfying snap!) to extend the grip by quite a bit. One knife is $20-ish and the other is $80-ish. But, who cares, right?

In all reality, you're probably better off with the SDOKEDC brand. After all, a lot of people don't know that ESEE doesn't have one piece of manufacturing equipment in their facility. All of their knives are made by either Rowen Manufacturing or White River Knives. A lot of people assume that they're a manufacturer, but they aren't. So, in reality, at $25 you're probably paying the same price that Esee pays Rowen for their OEM branded knives!

I was looking at that knife for a small fixed blade but I wanted a little bit softer steel that was also stainless and also wanted an overall smaller knife. I went with the Tonife Nova. I highly recommend it, it's a hidden gem IMO but it's more of a neck knife. 20 bucks, can't beat it.

Good solution, but it's still a horribly designed sheath.

Too thick, too heavy, too big (just like the BK2), & too expensive. A 1/4” thick slab of 1095 steel should be durable, if not than nothing will be. The fact that you don’t carry it much and it only excels at battoning really says all that needs to be said. A knife is a tool for slicing and cutting, not pounding and prying. Much better knives available.

Such a solid knife brother. I own one esee only but it’s a tactical knife. This is a beast blade. Definitely a hard core batoning blade. It’s like those beefy Becker knives in its thickness.

Looked like a nice trip and a great campsite. The Chimneys are really neat. I dont know if they still do it, but they used to have jousting tournaments in the field there. Pretty wild.

Awful knives, you could buy three mora robust knives for the same price, well in the UK anyway. I'm not influenced by the Ukraine, Russia propaganda when purchasing a knife. In my experience the steel used for making these knives is awful, utter rust buckets.
