Interesting video! I think that Johnson's story is so intriguing (indeed, how many stories of other bluesmen have made it into civilizational consciousness?) because it's an archetypal story. You've got a guy who has to make a choice (the crossroads) and he chooses to follow his passion (the devil) rather than a more conservative path. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Johnson did have a choice. He could read and write (which was was rare) and had a stepfather who owned a farm and wanted Robert to work on it and lead a more or less normal life. However, after Johnson saw the fame and money earned by Charley Patton at Dockery Farms, he knew the direction he wanted to take. Whether there was an actual crossroads with a devil or not, he made a decision and after he did, things did move quickly for him. He went back home to Hazelhurst and immediate met a woman who took him in and sustained him while he practiced. He met a guy named Ike Zimmerman who taught him new techniques and forms, and, after only a year's time, returned to Dockery (where he had been laughed at previously) and blew them all away. Eventually he traveled far and wide (as far as Buffalo, NY) and recorded (thankfully) in San Antonio, Texas. As far as his death was concerned. The bar owner of his last gig (near Greenwood, MS) was threatened by his wife's attraction to RJ (there may or may not have been anything going on other than flirting) and tried to get rid of RJ by putting some ground up moth balls in his drink. Doing this was a common method of getting rid of unwanted customers (it makes them sick) back in the days when a sheriff may be a day's ride away. The bar owner's intention (as I've read) was only to make RJ sick so he'd go away. The issue was the RJ had an ulcerated throat and the poison was able to get into his blood stream and kill him. While it's more logical to dismiss the mystical aspects of the Johnson story, it's a lot less fun. And furthermore, there's too much symbolism in play to not accept the mysticism of the story on some level. It's just a beautiful, poetic...and American...story, and I'm glad we have it.
