Production Notes
- As always, I set myself some challenges with this track. I wanted to make something tribal, chilled out in the style of "shemanic tales" by Astrix, or "stardust" by ETN. Both which are exquisitely produced tracks that I later learnt were in a subgenre of psytrance called Zenonesque. Very different from things I normally listen to, or would ever think I could make to any degree of success. I also wanted to throw away the rulebook when it came to bass. The main bass is a) synthesised using a square wave, which is not commonly used in psytrance b) sits all over the top of the kick drum, which a mortal sin in psytrance c) has a lot of analogue-esque slides to give it a more natural feel and d) seemingly simple, but ever evolving and multi-faceted with layers - although it only has 3 variations in pattern.
- With this being produced over the black Friday season there were a lot of stupidly good deals on synths, which all got rolled in to this project. This includes heavier use of Omnisphere, but includes UVI Falcon 3, Meteor, Asteroid, and World Suite 2. I also purchased I Wish and Manipulator from Polyverse Music which are used more than you would image. One of the main synth patters is me rambling in to the microphone and altered using Polyverse software to give it an Infected Mushroom or even Shpongle vibe. Sound-wise I'm happy with how the track came out.
- I committed to not using copyrighted sounds for this track - any samples aren't from licensed packs, or my voice, are from UA-cam videos that are flagged for Creative Commons usage. It's here that I've tapped in to my wife's heritage and used rural and rainforest soundscapes from Philippines - hence the chickens. The flutes and tribal singing are also filipino in origin.
- Flow-wise, this track definitely has some energy level issues. The track starts and stops and starts and stops, instead of consistently building to peaks. But this somewhat fits with the zenonesque / tribal subgenre, but also with the story of the track - drinking shots Lambanog... :)
