    Rebuilding?? What happened to the original that was nearly complete? Did it ever fly?

    • @donfielden
      @donfielden 28 днів тому

      @TailwheelTimes We were almost ready to fly when we noticed the fabric seperating from the fuselage structure. We believe the Oratex glue was incompatible with the epoxy paint we used on fuselage cage. Many discussions with Oratex factory and much internal testing later, we finally "cracked the code". So, we are back to putting her back together.

    Any videos of retracting the wing? Do you need to disconnect flaps to get clearance?

    • @AeropupUSA
      @AeropupUSA 8 місяців тому

      Hello. We will shoot a video of retracting the wings on the Aeropup. Retracting of the wing requires the removal of four pins (two for the main spar attach point and two safety pins at bottom of struts) and swing the wing back towards the tail. There is nothing to disconnect. Reall simple and fast process.

    What's your complete toe-brake kit worth? I'm interested in a retrofit for an original Australian built AeroPup. Thanx Don

    Сегодня я подписался на Ваш канал. Я тоже строю самолёт. Это Питенпол Эйр Кэмпер с небольшими изменениями. В России. Я также пользуюсь эпоксидным клеем и стекловолокном. Я склеил по этой технологии бензобак для своего самолёта. Today I subscribed to your channel. I'm building an airplane, too. This is Pietenpol Air Camper with minor changes. In Russia. I also use epoxy glue and fiberglass. I glued a gas tank for my plane using this technology.

    What is the black stuff on the outside of the molds? Duct tape? Also what do you use as a release agent? Thanks.

    • @donfielden
      @donfielden Рік тому

      Yes, the black stuff is duct tape that is applied to the surface of the mold that contacts the fiber glass. No release agent required for this set up.

      Hello, thanks for checking in. We are getting very close to getting the Aeropup USA Demo aircraft in the air. We've been busy pushing Aeropup kits out the door to our customers and the supporting their builds, which has diverted attention away from completing the demo temporarily. I am happy to state that our very first builder has their Aeropup airborne.

  • @TailwheelTimes
    @TailwheelTimes Рік тому

    Can you supply any further info regarding the customer completed aircraft, such as engine used, empty weight, etc? Also how much longer before the demo plane is completed? I have been putting off purchasing until I can actually see and sit in one, and take a demo ride.

    • @donfielden
      @donfielden Рік тому

      Hello Rick. We are about two months away from completing aircraft and getting her airborne. We are adding the final touches, painting and doing the FAA paperwork. You can sit on our Aeropup now and even taxi it around the airport. Are you coming to Sun-n-Fun? I understand your hesitation to buy the kit without taking the plane for a test ride.

    • @TailwheelTimes
      @TailwheelTimes Рік тому

      Thanks Don. I'm not coming to Sun N Fun. Been there, done that. I'm waiting until the Aeropup flys before I come all of the way to Lakeland. I want to be able to see the real world performance, rather than the factory specs. I'm looking forward to when the Aeropup flies.

  • @TailwheelTimes
    @TailwheelTimes 2 роки тому

    Don, I love the plane. I am considering purchasing. It would be my second homebuilt. I also enjoy the videos, but if I may make a suggestion… hold your phone in landscape mode ( sideways) to get a bigger field of view. More pleasant to watch. (Some of your videos are in landscape and I’m sure you can see the difference). Not a big deal, but it makes the videos appear more professional. I am looking forward to coming in the spring to see the demo model up close and personal.

      Hello Rick. Thank you very much for the feedback and recommendations. I'm just amazed my ugly battle-hardened face didn't scare you away. I've never been accused of trying to make professional videos....LOL....my intent is to provide videos that are honest and true to the subject being filmed. I want my customers and builders to have a complete and accurate understanding of the subject being discussed. However, I see you your point about landscape versus portrait mode. I look forward to seeing you. All the Best, Don.

  • @RobertLBarnard

    I think this is the right way to go. A solid platform designed for easy maintenance ("easy" means it'll be more likely to get done on time, translating to safety). A design that trades a couple extra pounds and a little extra drag for safety, durability, maintainability, utility, and economy....without exotic materials or technology at its core. Steele is strong, durable, can absorb a lot of energy when it's being deformed, and will often bitch loudly to anyone paying attention when it's failing (i.e. doesn't tend to fail catastrophically). Adding a smart flight adjustable prop and pairing it with a modern engine, fuel injection, and (redundant) ignition and engine management firmware makes good sense (IMHO) as it is now well proven to be reliable and performant. It also allows for data recording which can be used to spot trends, and help diagnose issues and potential issues. Leveraging modern electronics for trim servos, navigation, and to help with awareness and simplify the pilot's workload is another great move. There isn't a replacement for proficiency, but amateur pilot's (for the most part) will always lack the skills and proficiency of professional pilots (yet we all want to build and fly an F-18 or a Warthog). Making an aircraft that builds in a fare amount of safety margin, remains approachable in multiple aspects (costs, maintenance, storage, etc), and provides utility beyond the $100 hamburger seems a more comfortable and obtainable dream. Regarding proficiency... I like to ride motorcycles, which is viewed by many as a risky activity. In fact, a motorcyclist is at risk of serious injury at a rate of 25 time greater that car drivers. Therefore I try to ride every day (here in the Atlanta Metro area), to maintain proficiency. So far (and knock on wood), it seems to work. This is how I manage the risk.
