King Alfred the great rallied his troops, against the Viking and Danish invaders, by lighting a huge beacon on a hill. The ground at the top of the hill is now woodland. This ground proved too soft to build on. So the monument was built lower down. About 100 Meters lower. This is where King Alfred's tower now stands.
