    just a tip, on the c# roll in the first part mosen uses his three fingers. In the echo video it looks like he uses his index first and then rolls from ring to middle to index. It's a hard enough technique. The hand stretch is really awkward to get, never mind the speed and accuracy. Niall Vallely does it a lot too, and he does it on both sides which is crazy.

      Hey buddy, Rythm, tempo. You need to slow it down and be more precise with your tempo. When you play fast, it's hard for me to tell what the meter is at all. I would slow down, and work for a solid tempo. This is stuff I've worked on for years. Use a metronome, and that will help. I was just telling this to my sister when we last spoke. She's working on classical guitar, using tabs. She starts fine, then begins to speed up, and can no longer proceed. My best advice is to only play as fast as you can play the most difficult part of your piece. I hope that helps. I wasn't sure to say anything or not. I'm not a music teacher. I had two years of piano starting at 8 yrs. Everything after that is self-taught, but I'm a dynamite site-reader. I wish you continued advancement on those squeeze boxes. Merry Christmas. J. @@johnxavier8732 John, thank you very much! Advice, tips are always appreciated. You hit the nail on the head. I am painfully aware of my unsteady rhythym and tempo and I expect it to be the roadblock in my way for a while. I tend to speed up and slow down when I play songs and that's something that's holding me back. Picking the right speed that suits my current abilities for any song is the key. Anything faster than that is just enforcing sloppy playing and bad habit building. The only training I've gone through on the concertina is the Jack Talty's concertina course on McNeela's website and he made the same comment of not speeding up at familiar parts and slowing down at difficult parts. I started off playing trombone around 10 years and kept with it until I was about 18. Played in a highschool band setting. I picked up guitar for a year around the age of 10 but never stuck with it. My timing seemed better back then from my memory but obviously playing with others and perhaps a more structured regiment helped keep me in line. I used to sight read bass clef pretty well but now I'm poor at that. I can sight read treble clef better now but I still notate my sheet music with note names to help keep me in line. I struggle with a metronome as I tend to lose the song a bit with the clicking but I should keep forcing myself to use one. Slow it down to something that seems reasonable and work my way up. One issue I have is I'm tending to play a lot of different kinds of music. My irish music repertoire sees me in all sorts of key signatures and that compounds this issue. 4/4 timing at a decent tempo is something I can stick with but going into jig (6/8) or slip jig (9/8) or other complex time signatures makes me forgoe counting at all as I play. Do you have any comment on how to use a metronome to help with playing in time signatures outside of standard 4/4? I haven't used it much yet but, there's a website called ABC Transcription tools by a guy named Michael Eskin. It's good for converting ABC notation into sheet music but it has a built in metronome and tune player that I think might help provide a beat to play along with while still keeping in mind the time signatures required for some of these tunes that aren't in 4/4. I suppose I just struggle to line the metronome up and my playing with all the offbeat portions of the rythym if that makes sense. I feel getting a steady tempo down and learning to count better will be another step to enhancing my whole level of musicality. I need to practice the very concept. I certainly have it within me to do so. Thanks again, Merry Christmas!

    • @Whatzzzz999
      @Whatzzzz999 8 місяців тому

      Metronome, definitely. There is no hiding from a metronome! You can't fool it.. Your dexterity is excellent, it's only the time-keeping. Play a - say - 120bpm piece at 70 or 80bpm, play it perfectly, grace notes, cuts etc. When it's perfect, up the tempo 5 beats. Don't increase the tempo until it's perfect. Then another 5 bpm. Etc... you get the idea I'm sure. My favourite 'music practice quote' is: 'practice until you couldn't play it wrong even if you wanted to'. I'm trying to adhere to that one myself at the moment, ha ha... All the very best to you.

      Thanks for your comment. I had a Tai chi teacher; he was never into music. He started listening to Irish music when I started playing Irish whistle and Illean pipes. He wanted to play Bodhran. I purchased him a bodhran, and after a few weeks, loaned him my metronome. He gave it back a week later, and sarcastically said, "that thing is broken". Cheers mate. J. X.@@Whatzzzz999

      Thank you! I have a tunebook from Talisk that I purchased that's helped me figure out what tunes they are playing in each song. It's difficult though, most of their songs are in key signatures with 3-5 sharps and I'm playing on a 30 button concertina whereas the player in Talisk has more buttons with bellow reversals. Either way, they have some really fun to play songs and I'm glad to hear that some folks such as yourself think it sounds good!

      Thank you very much, Luke! Couldn't have learned this song without the help of your wonderful tutorial. I still struggle at times with the pace, how long to hold the chords for, playing a proper Eminor chord cleanly and not running out of bellows on the B part. It's not as easy to phrase the song on my baritone but I certainly get a nice clean sound when playing harmonically. I really enjoy this one and it's a privilage to have you comment on one of my videos. I wish I could ask for some tips to play this one more cleanly but I have a distinct suspicion that it all comes down to practice and technique!

    • @lukehillman
      @lukehillman 9 місяців тому

      @@Concertina_Appalachia practicing definitely makes a difference. I think, in some places, you're naturally speeding up because low reeds use a LOT of air, and, well, you have to get through the phrase before you run out of bellows! You could try playing as softly as possible and see if that makes a difference; otherwise, just practice using the air valve to maximize your available bellows in either direction. You can probably tell this is a much more noticeable issue playing harmonically than it is when playing melody only. But really, you're already sounding great!

    • @Concertina_Appalachia
      @Concertina_Appalachia 11 місяців тому

      Thank you! I actually play from sheet music. I found a piano solo for this song and started playing the melody. Once I have the song down the sheets become less important and its rather done a bit by ear and a bit by note memorization. I tend to drill the notes into my head in ABC format and then it sticks after a few days of repetition. This one likely needs some harmony behind it but that's rather difficult to incorporate with my limited experience. Practice makes perfect!

      @@aurelioc8858 Absolutely, here you go! blogs.bu.edu/rpt/files/2016/07/The-Office-Theme-Song.pdf Let me know if the link doesn't work I can find another way of sending it to you. It's such an iconic tune that I think most people recognize it and it really brings some nostalgia along with it. The more the merrier! I too have a duet (a 48 button crane) but I am drawn to the diatonic nature of the anglo and am far better at it than any other style of concertina. I reckon it'd be a lot easier to learn the tune with harmony on a duet and you might have better luck than I've had here. I would need to change all of my fingerings to match the bellow directions for each chord length and then it would be a matter of applying the right pressure to not run out of bellow movement. This version of the song doesn't have much by the way of chords, it's simply a 2 note interval diad progression. Just for reference, I've been trying to play through the first two lines, repeat the 3rd and 4th lines and then repeat back to the first two lines until I'm ready to stop the song and then I move onto the final line. Traditionally I write my ABC notation down to help me with songs but I actually figured this one out just from staring at the sheet music with a few a few hours practice. Come back when you've got a rendition and share if you would be so kind! Thank you!

I played a Stagi duet for years, and now I have a peacock duet from concertina connection. I've been fighting numb fingers for about twenty years , so that raises hell with my concertina, or anything else for that matter. Check out my Wreck of the Edmund Fitsgerald, the only concertina video I currently have on my channel. You've encouraged me to try some more concertina videos, happy Labor Day my friend.

      Thank you very much for the comment! I have been at it for just about 7 months now and it's been a great time. I actually have two anglos, a crane duet and a treble english but I'm partial to the anglo. The diatonic nature gives me a lot of control over the rhythym and I enjoy the subtle-ness of different reeds when approaching passages with alternate fingerings. Though a lot of songs seem more straight forward with a duet. I listened to a few of your songs and your Wreck of Edmund Fitsgerald; you are a fantastic musician. Great job on that duet concertina, I really enjoyed it. You play a lot of modern songs and it's really a treat to listen to such controlled performances while sounding beautifully authentic. The music needs to find it's way out, rather than be forced. You make it seem easy! Thankfully I am just started up again with my musical journey and my body still responds the way I anticipate; with a few more years and some good fortune, I hope to continue improving. Excited to hear your further concertina videos and anything else which you publish. Happy playing!

      Thanks for sharing some of your journey with me. Thanks so much for your kind compliments. That peacock surprised me when I got it, because I was used to the Stagi, which is good, nice sound, but the response time is so slow. The peacock the notes just jump out. The only problem is that when I play the Peacock the left side, where I play an accompanying bass and chords, it tends to drown out the right, or melody side. I'm going to try to just put a small towel over my hands to see if it dampens it enough to record with a better balance. Thanks again my friend, keep in touch. J. X.@@Concertina_Appalachia
