Best horse I ever had was a n Arabian stallion that had raced, then stood at stud. I got him when he was 18 years old and 2 weeks after I got him I felt comfortable enough to ride him bareback beside a busy road. He went over 2 lane bridges with 18 wheelers and school buses passing by and never even batted an eye. I give my horse lots of attention and ground work and love and he Blossomed ! I could do everything to him without a halter or anything on him , even paste worm him ! What a GREAT horse! and a very special gift to me.

Totally agree. Especially if you're going to ride off the property where you are likely to encounter other people's dogs or livestock. A number of months ago I was hand walking my mare before she was being ridden and the neighbors dog came running up, barking like crazy. They apologized and ran to get her but it didn't bother me because it was good training for her. Now when I ride her out, the community dogs that run around don't bother her at all.

I’m so glad you said this. I look at horse videos all the time and see some of the most angry, judgmental and divisive comments! Also people are often extremely insulting about techniques, opinions, etc. I never understood that! I am a newbie and trying to learn all I can.

Great points. Just like teaching them to stand for the farrier. If they don't want to stand, remove them from that location, do some circles, disengage the hind end, come back to the original location and look for that positive step in the attitude/direction you want. Always smile and be patient while making the wrong thing hard and the right thing easy.

Thank you for this ! I am 78 years young and have been riding since I was 8 years old. Most of my horses have been Arabians and I have ridden bareback in all gaits on an Arabian stallion that used to race before I got him, so I know how to ride ! The horse I have now is an Arab and the most Reactive horse I have ever had. I have worked with him for years on the ground and walking down a FM road with trucks and 18 wheelers going by (the only place I have to ride). He is SO Much calmer and spooks less or not at all when I am leading him. It is a Very different story when I ride him !!! I never know when the will spook Big and I have fallen off several times bareback. I now know I have to ride him with a saddle and it is a LOT of work to keep his mind on me. I don't Bounce like I did at 8 !! I sit a trot and a gallop bareback without my seat coming off his back so I am not a novice. I have his respect and he is bonded to me . I can do everything I do to him without anything on him ( tack him up ,pick out his feet, brush him spray him, etc.). . I am looking forward to seeing this because I hesitate to ride him because it is not safe right now !
