I make mountain bike related content and love riding bikes. I come from Calgary, Alberta and this is where I put some of my work, enjoy!
Long Live Kikapu: Bike Experiment Goes Wrong
My beloved Kona Kikapu recently got a crack in the frame. To commemorate this bicycle, I installed two vintage downhill forks and rode each one to see how they felt and ultimately, completely break the Kikapu frame. I installed a 2001 Marzocchi Shiver World Cup & a 2002 Marzocchi Monster T on my 2004 Kona Kikapu and things went not so well. In light of Kona Bicycles recently being bought back by the original owners, this bike went way beyond it's limits and was a great bike to have, and I believe Kona makes really good bikes.

On April 30th 2024, B-LINE bike park in Calgary, closed forever. I had the pleasure to spend some of the final moments making this video with Jack, who grew up riding B-LINE. This facility has created an amazing community of people and will be missed deeply by everyone. Thank you to Ryan Greenberg for everything you have done for us. Кона говно
Is this the new progression geometry? 😅
Респект Сигма момент
This Is the meaning of full sospensions
Lol
Congratulations your bike has now turned into a chopper🎉🎉
Haha
Die Federung ist besser als der Rahmen
Haha yup
Now thats real Slack geometry bike
The future is here!
I could already see the frame folded before you started pumping it but how did this happen.
Putting too big fork on this bike made the frame start folding in so I decided I would finish it so that someone else doesn't get hurt riding this bike, lol
@AndrewYoungOfficial oh
me trying to figure out what kind of frame😂
haha
Kona Kikapu
Goddamn thought that was the suspension...
haha
Oh well...
Yup, pretty dumb.
I love how you make this look TOO easy. LETS GOOOOO!!! NGL, I'm surprised we don't have any shale, gravel, or sand pits chutes or freeride zones off Moose Mountain. Any idea why?
This is incredible! I spent my season out in Loops and I've been looking for Gravel Pits-esque riding near my home, Canmore. This gives me hope! There's been so much resistance to freeride and dh trails in the Bow Lately. Many pirates are shutting down. Backyard builders are still building in full force. A matter of connections these days :(
I live right next to a golf course, you just gave me a idea
"On its way out"is a funny way to say "finished."
Haha
Cool
I literally bought a dirt jumper yesterday so I could start going to b line.. they closed 2 days ago I am razzed
Such a bummer
That groan at the end....😕
Sweet video
Thanks!!
In Germany we say: Fährst du Kona Brauchs du Schoner Und fährst dich ins Koma Das wusste schon die Oma
Hell yea
I have weld six bikes four of them was Kona’s!
Hahaha
That’s not a crack, that’s an emergency suspension and as a bonus your bike now has modern geometry and improved stand over!
Hahaha
this was mental!
Haha
That HT angle is so slack!
Haha!
That'll buff out. lolololol
F around and find out, I guess
True!
That was awesome Andrew! Loved it! haha.
Thanks Dylan!!
Rip kikapu, I have an old caldera in the same colour.
Thanks for the comment, was a great bike while it lasted.
Kona losing the headtube, the internet forum classic
Right? Haha
In russia 200x bike community exist meme "kona is shit" because of too many broken frames.
Haha
@@AndrewYoungOfficial there is a nostalgic video about it with photos of broken Konas ua-cam.com/video/VqaBe_YyjYA/v-deo.html
Dame, that could've been welded from the get go )
The top tube was super thin aluminum
@@AndrewYoungOfficial well, im sure the guys who repair aluminium knows some hows to that problem. Or maybe they don't. Anyway, good video. Nice to know that even cracked aluminium can still take a ride home. I don't think carbon can )
The issue is that these frames are heat treated from the factory. If you weld the area there's going to be a zone of stress where the metals crystalline structure is different to the rest of the frame due to the heat input leading to a huge weak spot. The only way to rectify that is to get the frame heat treated again after the welding which is just not cost effective.
Steel is real
Hell ya
bro gave it modern slack
Haha
riding full squish to dj screw such a vibe tho thought i was the only one
Hell yaa
She's slack now. Weld her up.
Reckless and unwieldy behaviour with a classic. You should be fined for destruction of a historic artifact.
I appreciate your concern. Bikes are meant to be ridden, not hung up on a wall. I got this bike used and rode it as a commuter and light mountain bike. Who knows what the previous owners did to this bike! The frame was damaged from using the bike and I am really bummed out that it happened, I really liked this bike alot. I figured a damaged frame however is unsafe to ride and instead of risking having someone ride it and hurt themselves I figured I would do the honor. It's calculated risks just like anything else mtb related.
a frame that dents from the sheer amount of riding and abuse is a sign of a well loved bike
Thanks for the comment!
now weld it stiff and you have a 2025 geometry before everyone else
Haha!
I used to have that exact model of Kikapu! 100mm travel with a crap undamped Marzocchi bomber up front. I upgraded the forks to a Bomber Z1 drop-off 140 and swapped the stock basic coil to a fox air shock that actually had adjustable damping. That bike rode really well, ended up swapping the frame for a longer 120mm travel Dawg Primo and kept that bike from 2009 all the way to 2020.
Wicked story, so cool. It was an amazing bike I just think the frame had had enough.
A problem take it to fabricator to cut crack, install sleeve and weld?
exactly what i thoughT!! wtf...
Kikapu got a 2024 geometry. Cool!
Haha!
Should take a welding class and fix that boo
haha
nicr
Thanks for the comment
You could says its Kikaput
Hahaha
Kickapu chucked its last deuce
Haha!!
