    Hi Thea - super idea with the black cork and the sheer fabric. I've tried fairy lights several times, but its difficult to find lights that have a function that isn't the frenzied on/off flash action. I like how you mix things up each year. I do the same - in spite of saying at the end of the current year's build I plan to use it for several years. I've been on my build for the past week and have one section completely built and ready for staging. The second section will reuse components of previous years with the only build being a tunnel with open portals giving visibility to the trolley and vendors on the rear side platform and passengers on both. The third section is completely new as an expansion. So I'll be watching your progress and look forward to picking up some new techniques. Glad to see you're back...

    what is the pink stuff you put on the foam before painting?

    • @TheasChristmasVillages
      @TheasChristmasVillages Місяць тому

      @@cathyedwards-n9r it's called poly-filla or spackling. It comes in pink or white. The pink changes to white as it dries, that's how you know it's dry enough to paint. The reason I use spackling is to seal the styrofoam before painting. Otherwise it just soaks up the paint which then disappears (learned that the hard way🙂)!

    Is the spackling for texture or making the mountain sturdy?

    • @TheasChristmasVillages
      @TheasChristmasVillages 2 місяці тому

      Hi Heather, the spackling is applied to give the styrofoam a better base for painting,. If you apply paint directly to the styrofoam, it tends to soak in and disappear. The texture the spackling leaves is also beneficial, makes the "mountain" look more realistic. Hope that helps.

    Congrats on you new adventure! I know with your creativity level, your products will be stunning just like your Christmas villages... Gardening/chickens fill my spring summer and fall. However this summer here in TN at the higher elevations has been awful.. May was constant rain/storms overcast. My weather station measured 15.87in of rain. May's monsoons gave way to June's storm and massive heat waves ith triple digit heat indices with muggy humidity. Half of June was near drought and July brought violent thunderstorms. That weather flowed into July and now while it's still 90s the humidity and temps are coming down with NO rain in sight for over a week. I abandoned my summer garden and plan to plant for Fall. All was not lost as I was able to redesign my village, add a north pole section and spend hours on ebay buying up a storm. Glad to hear you'll be back with a village this year. I always gain different perspectives on the various aspects of Christmas villages and even learn a few new techniques. And that's all on top of enjoying your journey.

      Thanks for your congratulations. Part of the fun of having a channel is connecting with other entrepreneurs like yourself! My daughter is like you, her gardens and outdoor activities, and she and her family are currently on the lookout for a bigger property to accommodate her green thumb. She is hampered by a small city property that doesn't have the space she desires for her flowers and veggies. She wants to get chickens as well. With the weather we've had in Canada (lots of rain every week again, and a hot, hot July), gardens here are like jungles right now. The landscapers in the area are run off their feet with maintenance. It a crazy year, not only with weather, environment but also politics all over the world. Feels like we are spinning faster and faster, right? My redesign of the 2024 Christmas village is still only in my head. I have completely different ideas for this year. Next month I will start slowly rebuilding the seasonal display! Cheers, and thanks for reaching out!

    Your talk about the trai reminds of a time when I made a scene where a train was coming out of a tunnel but I made it look like the tunnel caved in and part of the train trapped and rock surrounding the opening. Trains are difficult to keep going and not de-railing. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Maybe one day I will be able t get some Hotwire tools to aid in my village construction.

    • @TheasChristmasVillages
      @TheasChristmasVillages 9 місяців тому

      My biggest issue with trains in tunnels are the cords for the lighting that need to go to the power bars in the very back. They need to go under the track bed. And that means sorting out the cords even before the tunnel is closed up and levels built. Makes it awkward to get a smooth track. As soon as the track isn't completely smooth, the train has trouble. I could go electric train but somehow the expense doesn't make much sense anymore. I probably only have a few years of village building left. 🤭

    Throw away stairs??? Why may I ask?

      Because something that works one year doesn't work for another. And styrofoam stairs do not store well , they look quite ratty the next year. I have saved them before, as well as platforms to raise buildings, and I never end up using them again. I prefer to make fresh every year. Tailor made for each new layout.

    hello, love all your tutorials, they have inspired me to do more. I was wondering if you had one on making a tunnel for the train. Ive looked but don't see one from you, I must have missed it . Thank you again for the great instructions and all the time you spend to explain how to do....

      Thank you!! I'm glad you can benefit from my videos. To build the tunnel I simply glue several slabs of Styrofoam together, place them on the base where I would like the tunnel to be, put the track on top of the slabs, trace out where the track would go, and use the hot Styrofoam carving knife to carve out the walls of the tunnel. I typically do not glue the level down to the base, only because the cords for the lights of the houses that are standing in front of the cliff need to go underneath that level. Then I lay another thinner slab of Styrofoam on top for the roof of the tunnel. I do not glue the roof down because it needs to be accessible in case of disaster in the back of the tunnel. Then I place several narrower slabs of Styrofoam (glued together) on top of that, to produce the second level. At this point, if you wanted varying levels for the buildings, you would add them now. Here are the links to two videos that show how it's done: ua-cam.com/video/vGmNwRV_7sw/v-deo.htmlsi=cCBeJPuc2Lzwhn1x ua-cam.com/video/HTF4YHl_1rk/v-deo.htmlsi=rmiyNnTzPbshr6v6 Happy New Year!!
