A review of one of the most detailed gaming headsets of all time, www.audeze.com/products/maxwell-wireless-gaming-headset Update: I recommend using bass mode in the app as to my ears it sounds more natural, adding a tasteful, moderate increase in bass. You can use the app to eq the headphone further, but you run into digital clipping quickly if you push things too far.

    for the record, this one sounds fantastic if you change the tubes and op-amps, and doing so isn't very expensive, i use it myself. I am convinced the reason for the low price is because a lot of the default parts are really cheap, but thankfully easily replaceable, sounds nice and wide on my Takstar Pro 82's, which aren't a very "wide" sounding headphone on their own, so it definitely improves soundstage a fair amount if anything.

      I'm planning on getting one of these headphone amps and want to change the tubes/op-amp. I'm planning on starting with a pair of matched GE JAN 5654W tubes. Are there any other suggestions? Also, what op-amp did you use? How many does this Fosi need?

    • @opti6248
      @opti6248 Місяць тому

      @@andreblair6512 Those are the exact tubes I use and Fosi themselves seem to recommend it as well. I used LF353N op amps, accidentally ordered 5 thinking I'd need that much when in fact this amp only needs 2 lol. Pair it with a half decent DAC and you're set if you want pretty good "tube sound".

    Really great, honest review, thank you! It matches with my experience, and you say a lot of things all other reviewers missed, and describe things I experienced but couldn't find words for. I also missed some air and found the bass to be there but step back quite often. Those headphones are not bad at anything, good or very good at most things, but still sounded a bit boring to me as a result. I compared those with the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro, DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms, DT 700 Pro X, DT 770 Pro X LE, and a couple of cheaper headphones, including two DT 770 Pro knockoffs. In the end, the DT 770 Pro won for me, with the other two Beyers and this one being second, followed by the HD 280 Pro, and then the cheap ones. The DT 770 Pro might have a less smooth frequency response, but sound far more exciting and still very even and detailed. They have lots of air, but were not too sibilant, they have a wider soundstage, and better build. In comparison: - The K-361 sounded a bit boring, less detailed, less airy, sometimes a bit intense in the upper midrange in comparison (DT 770 Pro are slightly recessed there) but smoother and a bit more balanced - The DT 700 Pro X sounded more closed-in, less airy, still maybe even more prone to sibilance, but with a flatter, cleaner midrange - The DT 770 Pro X LE sounded a bit too V-shaped with lots of sub-bass, treble which can get pretty spicy, and recessed upper bass and midrange - The HD 280 Pro sounded too mid-forward with too little energy in the bass and treble, very closed-in, direct, in your face and therefore fatiguing in their own way - The cheaper options were sometimes great for the price but couldn't match the K-361 and the Beyers The DT 770 Pro were definitely the quietest and would benefit from an amp, but the 80 Ohms version doesn't necessarily need one, it still works great on my MacBook Pro and my audio interface.

    they sound good, they don't break, superb soundstage, detailed, 3.5mm detachable, they are cheap, material don't feel good and sometimes they squeek a little, but they are confortable. (3 years and they are like new and I use them a lot).

    Been looking at these headphones for a while now and this is one kf the better no-nonsense reviews I've come across. Thanks for reviewing them! Think I'll be getting these to replace my Hifiman HE400i ver. 2020 and the Bose NCH 700, since I want a real upgrade from my Hifimans but still want the convenience of wireless (since I don't really use the HE400i much at all since getting the Bose), and the Maxwell seems to be the only headphone that does literally everything (except ANC, but that I can live without) and is gonna be an upgrade without breaking the bank subbed!

And if so, should I connect it directly to the headphone out so I can have volume control (even though it introduces noise above 70%)? I want to drive a pair of edition XS. Thanks!

    I had the HD 800 S at one time and loved them for games and music both since the tuning was different than the HD 8XX. Good alternatives I recommend these days for a third of the price are either the Moondrop Para or the Aune AR5000. The Para are planars and have a similar neutral bright tuning to the HD 800 S, whereas the AR5000 are dynamics with neutral tuning similar to the HD 600 with extended bass. You're going to get 90 percent of that airy, wide soundstage of the HD 800 S with either pair, and you can't go wrong choosing either. I love my Para so much in fact that I had a custom leather suspension strap made for it and swapped out the stock pads for DCA Ether angled sheepskin leather pads, if that says anything.

      I think he meant they are good for immersive gaming (and I can attest to this) but if you're looking for accuracy (i.e. hunting those MF'ers down that done said those things about your mee-maa in the lobby) for pin-pointing gun-shots and foot steps, then this headphone isn't the best for that.

  • @tomdavis6371

    The cables aren't a cause of any driver issues. Focal has had some problems with blown drivers on the Elex and a couple of other headphones but not throughout their entire line-up. I have been hearing recently that the real cause of this problem is listening at insane volume levels with particular types of music, such as electronic EDM. They also have problems mentioned in forums having to do with their headbands snapping. I have little doubt that there are just certain people in the world who don't treat their gear very kindly and I've never understood that. I've been into audio for over 45 years now and have seen a lot of stupidity over those years. This is a great headphone which will give you a lot of years if just taken care of. Don't throw it across the room or drop it, don't wear it to the gym or on the basketball court. I love this headphone after two years of ownership but I will add that the material used in these pads, while unbelievably soft and comfortable, will attract any skin oil your hair and ears might produce and will necessitate changing the pads more frequently, not an inexpensive proposition, costing anywhere from around $50 to $90 depending on where you purchase them and which ones you decide to buy. Higher priced Focal headphone models such as the Clear offer suitable pads but cost significantly more money, around $200 while Dekoni offers pads which will work fine but change the signature a bit. Headphones.com currently is selling the Elex for $459, truly a great price for a headphone which will give you a huge percentage of the performance that the much pricier Clear offers. The cables are good quality but stiff and janky and a real PITA. I'd recommend Hart Cables, Periapt and Audiophile Ninja as very solid choices that won't break the bank and also add that Hart Cables offers an adapter kit which allows you to plug a standard cable termination into several different adapters with different connections, i.e. balanced. The Elex isn't necessarily an upgrade of the 600 series Sennheisers, it different. It does have a wider soundstage though and the bass output of the Elex is superior to that of the 600 series, though the newer 660S2 has addressed that by boosting the bass while also elevating the high frequencies, I think pretty effectively lifting the notorious Sennheiser veil. I've heard it said of both headphones that the treble is kind of HOT, or just overdone. At my age I appreciate the added "sizzle". I've heard that same remark about the Meze 109 Pro as well and disagree. The Meze is another exceptional sounding headphone. All of these headphones sound excellent either connected to solid state amplification (Burson Audio Composer 3 Performance) or tubes (Woo Audio WA-6 1st Gen). This is such a FUN hobby, enjoy it!

    I have one, and it is not for everyone. I have done 2 mods that have improoved my listening experience. I have removed the cloth from the pads, it's an improovement on openess and also confort (the cloth was rubbing my ear). The other is a 3d printed cover that sits arround 4mm away from the driver. It gives a litlle more punch on the mid highs that lacks without it. I have listened straight from the laptop, the cel phone and also using an external DAC/Amp (old Fiio E17) and on the main system (V-DAC + Sabaj PHA3 with russian tubes). It's easy to drive, but the quality, dynamics and impact is absolutelly improoved if you use good source / amp gear. It goes very well with prog rock, jazz and other kind of music that benefits from the extra hoomp on the bass.

    Supposedly, If you remove the sticker and adhesive on the inside of the cups, they measure almost the same as hd800s and with a little EQ to bring up the base and a few adjustments to the peaks around 5.5k and 10k, and they should be as close to perfect as 800s can get.
