A lone and sad person looking up to the sky asking if god has forgotten him. His heart also yearns for love. As god has so many angels in heaven, could he send just one of them to him.
Amazing Grace

Today I'm posting the well known Hymn "Amazing Grace". Some people find peace by singing the words. I find calm when I close my eyes and play this simple melody. It brings up pictures from all the beautiful places in my memory.

This melancholy tune comes from an old book of German Kitchen songs. It laments whoever invented parting never thought about love. The Seekers also used this tune in "Now the Carnival is over"

A beautiful Menuet by the composer Hanni Weinhart, who lived on a farm in Allgaeu/German Alpine region. Her compositions are melodious, uncomplicated and easy to play, based on the rich tradition of alpine folkmusic. I met Hanni in early ...

Schweizer Marsch

Today I share with you a lively Swiss March. It brings back happy memories of Switzerland: walks in the beautiful mountains, zither seminars I attended and lovely friends I made. The song talks about a jolly Swiss boy who has a habit of sleeping too long, but should get up because his cows are already in the meadow. There are lots of repeats of the refrain, which reminds me of a persistent alar...

"O du froehliche" My son Nigel provided the organ and trumpet backing track for my last video "O du froehliche". Here he is playing one of my favourite trumpet solos at a Christmas Concert in St.James Church, Sydney.

Here is another traditional Christmas song, to which my son provided the organ and trumpet backing track. This song reminds me of people filling churches and cathedrals to listen to the great sounds of organ, trumpet and choirs and then joining the joyous sound, singing along.

👏👏👏👏👏👏
Today played it!
Congratulations!! You are prepared to work hard and stick to it, so it payed off. But you have good prior knowledge playing Guitar and Accordion.Watch out for my next tutorial next month.Showing how to play chord accompaniment by memory in any key.
Ilse, that was exactly what i was looking for. My wife found a vintage W. Fischer zither and was having a headache tuning it. Thank you do much for your great video. All the best
Thanks for watching, glad I could help.Where in the world do you live and can you play zither or plan learning it, or play another instrument? Lots of other help videos on my channel and also a beginners teaching book(in Engl) and play alongs (Book and CD). Cheers from Australia,Ilse.
@@zithergirl I live in England, although I was originally born and bred in Rome, Italy. I have been playing guitar for 45 years, most of them professionally, and I also play bass and a plethora of exotic stringed instruments (oud, bouzouki, Arab-Andalus mandole, sitar, banjo: I have a strong lifelong interest in Arabic, Indian and African music). The zither is such a beautiful instrument, but learning to play it seems a daunting task, with all the coordination between the fingers. Moreover, I have three small children, and the time to even practice my own instruments is so very limited. I followed your channel for quite a long time, just as an appreciator of zither music. I just love all your videos, performances and tutorials alike. They bring me an enormous degree of pleasure, and for a little bit make me forget the outside world. Keep up the excellent work, Ilse, I love it! What about you, which part of Germany (or Austria) do you come from, and how long have you been living in Australia for?
My mother taught piano for years and that was one of the beginning students' pieces. I had no idea it was a German folk song!
Thanks for watching.probably in other languages as well.
Bravo!!!!
Thanks for watching.
There's also a Russian folk song with the same tune, with words written in 1883 by Dmitry Sadovnikov (look up "Stenka Razin" in Wikipedia, the song is mentioned in "Stenka Razin song" part)
thanks for watching. Yes I am aware of the Russian version, probably the original and also melancholy.
Beautifully played. Totally enjoyable. Hope to see more videos like this.
Thanks for watching ❤.
Very nice! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching❤
Very beautiffull
Thank you❤
Bravo!!!
I know the tune nut can't remember the words in English. I remember it being beautiful ❤
Thanks for watching. Its from my album "39 Great Folksongs for zither". The Seekers" used the tune in "The Carnival is over/Say goodbye my own sweet lover……Pierot and Columbine"
Çok güzel

wow this is wonderful thank you!!
Thanks for your reply, glad it helped. Are just starting the zither?
@@zithergirl yes I am a singer and piano teacher and paint instruments too and found one! I believe it is a Mandolin Guitar Zither. I am trying to restore it as best I can and am stuck on which strings to buy though ! I have tried to use standard harp strings to test if it will even work!
Thanks for looking at my channel.Look at my video"How to restring a concert zither" it shows that I order my strings online and I use Lenzner strings. Details on how to order in the video. Send a photo of your instrument with measurements, they will quote, accept PayPal and send by airmail, anywhere in the world. What country are you? Also on my website are the LINK Pages for Lenzner and Lorenz Muehlemann(Switzerland) check out his website,he also runs seminars and sells the sheetmusic for the Akkord zithers.Good luck. Ilse
Sehr schön gespielt liebe Ilse 🎵🎶🎵🥰
Danke Andrea
Brilliantly clear instruction, thank you very much!!❤
glad it helped, thanks for looking at my channel.Write if you have any other zither problems, I'll help if I can.
A beautiful and great recording! Very well played! Big like #20! Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Germany! 👍
Thanks for watching. I also checked out your channel and it's my kind of music. When I'm not playing zither I play bass clarinet in a chamber music group, Mozart, baroque, renaiss. etc.
@@zithergirl Thank you very much for your kind feedback and your support!
I play this on my Hawaiin slide guitar using 'slants' etc. Took me ages find out the title of it
Should sound great on slide guitar, why dont you post a video? Song got lots of verses, in Hawaiin, English, German.Popular with sailors.

The F A & C Sharp Accompaniment Strings are Colored Red because they actually act as "Separator Strings" to help w/ finding the right notes.
There’s a similar melodic phrase in Sonntag by Brahms. I wonder if there’s a connection!
Thanks for watching. There could be a connection, also melancholic.Parts of German Lieder and Art Songs where often simplified, shortened and became popular as folksongs eg Winterreise:"Am Brunnen vor dem Tore"; Heidenroeslein "Sah ein Knab ein Roeslein stehn"
Very nice!
and easy to play. Thanks for watching.
Wow. I think The Seekers did a version of this song called "The Carnival Is Over". Did you know that the popular 'British Music Hall' song, "Down At The Old Bull And Bush" was originaly a German Beerhall song?
thanks for watching.Yes lots of interchange between German and British music.
Die Melodie kenne ich gut seit etwa 60 Jahren als Kind.
Ja, damit bin ich auch aufgewachsen.❣
Sounds beautiful. Keep it up
Thanks for watching!
my favorite Christmas carol! whenever and where ever
After practicing each day little bit as beginner it is getting better. Simple Melodie’s are possible and few chords also work, but needs training for finger 2 and 3 to handle it more constantly and gradually faster. It was not easy!!! Patience and strong will was necessary. But feel good about each little betterment. Greetings from Germany!
Thanks for explaining it! Now tried it with one note melody. It will work well soon. Than want to try the second note. So far it is helpful that I played it with accordion and guitar too. It was like a dream to be able to play it with Zither. Now it is a good beginning and practice each day some time and feel it is getting better especially with chord strings. Which is not easy. Fingers are not used to it. But try it even if litte pains start on the top of the fingers and try to play notes as clear as possible with no disturbing sounds. It is a great Challenge. Greetings from Germany.
What a wonderful 88th birthday party, Ilse!! 🎉Wishing you many more! 😎
Thanks John! Yes I feel lucky, beautiful Sydney weather, great friends and my own family band.
Congratulations and many happy returns, Ilsa.
happy St Patrick birthday to you ENJOY down under

I LOVE THIS❤❤❤👍👍👍
After I tried little bit to learn few basics on Zither 6 years ago, but dit not continue since many years. But now wants to start again. And your lesson is exactly what I needed to begin with. Now I have 3 Zithers. A class mate from nearly 60 years ago brought me a Zither few days ago. His grandmother in Poland passed away and they wanted to throw away that instrument, so I came into his mind as musician and brought it to Germany. I hope in near future a few easy sounds may come out. I practiced a couple of different string instruments and that may help little bit for understanding the melody strings.
good luck! slow and steady does it.
Great way to start the day.
thanks for watching!
Wonderful playing..enjoyed listening..🥂👍🎶🎵awesome performance❤

2:19 The Ball end of the string goes over the pin
Yes Silent Night (it's a Very good English Translated Version of Stille Nacht) or as it's called in Spanish Noche De Paz. I can actually sing this one while strumming along on my Zither because the Zither can also be used to accompany the human voice & it's also great as a Singer-Songwriter instrument.
Thanks (Gracias) for watching. Yes you can use the zither as an accompaniment instrument, similar to a guitar. You can play chords both on the open strings and also on the fretboard,(see my instruction video). Helps if you have a good voice though .😏
@@zithergirl It can be used as an Accompaniment instrument like a Guitar, Piano, Piano Accordion, or even a Mandolin. I have a great singing voice & lucky me I can use Finger picks on all 5 fingers to strike the strings more easily & get a sharper attack out of the zither.
@@zithergirl Strings for German Zither actually have Ball Ends on the ends of them (they're Flat Ball Ends) that go over the pins. The Fretted Strings can be Phosphor Bronze Flatwound, Nickel Flatwound, or Silver Plated Copper. The Unfretted Strings are Silver Plate Copper wound around a Nylon Core, a Nylon & Steel Core, or a Silk n Steel Core (Green, Blue, & Red).

Hi Can I switch between Monachium/Viennese tunings on concert zither? Which of these tunings is better for learning modern songs?
the different tunings mostly affect the fretboard string on which you play the melody.Switching is not easy and takes time, you might have to start all over again. Vienna tuning is still played in some Austrian countries, but Munich tuning is now considered the STANDARD in most countries like Germany, US etc..It is a bit like imperial versus metric measurements. Imperial (inches, feet, miles) is still used in some countries but metric is replacing it. My book"LET'S START THE CONCERT ZITHER" is in Munich/Standard tuning for absolute beginners, it is available as downloadable file with mp3 audio file on which each exercise is individually recorded on zither.
@@zithergirl thank you :) Your video with tuning was very inspiring to renew my grandpa's zither and start learning. I tuned most strings in Munich by ear. I have some materials of a Pole called Alfred Plohn with excercises + also some old German/Austrian Polkas, Marsches, hand written songs. For now I have only problem with all 32 gauges, as it is not shared anywhere and I have to replace at least 4 of them. Some people advice to use guitar/mandolin gauges instead of buying expensive whole 32 stringed packs. I realize it's risky for wood and tuners but maybe there are some cheaper alternatives from other similar instruments. It's hard to measure mm of the current strings as I am not sure of their origin.
Very nice indeed!🎉
Especially the nice backing track❤🎵🎼👍thanks for watching and listening
Gorgeous 😉💗
