A Ray of Sunshine a.k.a. back from the dead
7-28-24
A look at my sad excuse for a greenhouse that I had become disengaged from after a devastating winter loss of most everything. But There is a spirit of survival in these plants which is like a ray of sunshine to me. I can now envision a return to lushness.

Black Jack fig with twins
Переглядів 189Місяць тому
6/22/24 Today I noticed that my Black Jack fig tree has quite a few twins or Double figs from one node. After I made the video I realized that it is pretty much limited to one branch. I wonder if that branch is a sport and, if I air layer it, will I get a tree producing doubles?

Grafting Pawpaws (Asimina triloba) with a little help from my honeybees
Переглядів 1703 місяці тому
4/27/24 Did some grafting on my seedling pawpaws. I added the named varieties: Taylor, XL, and Rebecca's Gold. I was not very impressed with my grafting tape so I utilized some beeswax that I had handy. Hopefully it all goes well!

Update on reshaping the White Sapote trees
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
😲 so awesome!
He wasn't finished eating lol
I bet he was thinkin jackpot!
***UPDATE*** I never rewrapped the grafts after this video. A few days later a storm came through and dropped a branch from a nearby tree across two of my pawpaws. I lost the Rebecca's Gold graft and one of the two '1XL' grafts. 😢
Question if you graft different varieties of pawpaw onto one tree? Would they fruit?
That is the purpose of the grafts. Similar to my apple and pear trees where I have multiple varieties grafted to one tree. I am hoping it will help with pollination and also allow more varieties to grow in a smaller space.
Try air layering on the suckers
In the past, I have successfully done both air layering and rooted cuttings. This year I plan to just let them do whatever they want

Nice video Stephen did the Paw Paw leaf out?

@stephendunn4942 Thank you. I am trying something new. Have a seedling that split into 3 equal branches about 2ft off the ground. I grafted 3 varieties one on each branch and they all leafed out about 2 weeks ago. Not sure how this will work out. Thanks again and good luck 👍
Cây ăn trái của bạn mới trồng nhưng phát triển rất tốt 👍.
I live in north FL about 30 miles from the GA line, and the Texas Everbearing has been a big disappointment for me. I've read that it is just another name for brown turkey? Anyway, it died back to the ground three years in a row, regrowing to almost 6 feet all every year and has NEVER made a single fig. I managed to save it from freeze damage this winter and we're starting from 5 feet tall this year but so far no signs of any figs... Thanks for your video!
@quintyoung have you fertilized it at all? I don't really like to use man made fertilizers, but I have struggled the last several years so I did take some advice and threw a handful of 13-13-13 around each of my figs. It does seem to have helped.
Why don't you put a plastic bag over the graft scion? This is done with pecan grafts and seems to work well. It helps retain moisture and the buds seem to break faster.
Yes, I have seen the bags used by others. However, I seemed to have problems doing so. I do prefer to wrap the entire scion in a layer of parafilm, but did not have any during these grafts.
better late than never. glad your are doing well. wishing you a speedy recovery.
Yes, thank you!
They were delicious this year!!!
Were? Mine still are! LOL!!!
@@stephendunn4942 well all our wild berries are stalled out but our thornless are makin
They look good and healthy! I hope to complete our fig tour videos in the next week or so. I heard you mention the pawpaws . I've tried a couple times and failed with them ... But man I want to grow some so bad
I was able to figure out what one of the "forgotten" varieties are in the video; LSU Gold.
Here is the pawpaw video I made the same day as this fig video. ua-cam.com/video/MxsXIXdKQvw/v-deo.htmlsi=vVVIagDSRfi66wDl
Nice :) look at that JH ! Is the JH crunchy?
Not so sure I would call it crunchy. Last year I thought the heat had made it a little tough on the outside, but in hindsight it may just be what I would consider a "chewy" fig. Here is a link to last year's tasting. ua-cam.com/video/JHetALbJoEw/v-deo.htmlsi=SnQJujmxX0iRcMwF
i think that kind of fish dont like duckweed but trying to breathe on the water surface.
With some research it will be seen that goldfish do like to eat duckweed. That is the reason it was put with them. They actually ended up eating all of it over a period of time as I did not replenish the duckweed.
@@stephendunn4942 Thz for reply. I think either it likes or not you should support plastic ring floating on surface which is free from duckweed. so fish can choose air or food. thz.
Looks good. Amazing. That must have been how they did it back in the day.
Thanks! Not sure about its past use, but seems to be working so far.😊
What a deal. Couldnt even buy the oots for that price
I also have not liked the grafting tape from Amazon!
Where did you order your scion wood?
Crickethillgarden.com
Nice😊
Thnx!
Very nice, just getting into citrus growing.
Amazing! Although I would scoop out the pelets if they're left uneaten. Duck weed is amazing, but far from a conplete diet. I do love growing floating plants with my goldfish, because they tend to only eat the duckweed whilst leaving the rest behind. Your goldfish is adorable!
I went out to a local farm last weekend and the guy had some citrus in full bloom and I fell in love with that smell. It was amazing!!!! I planted a Celeste fig tree last weekend, fingers crossed that it doesn’t die on me. 🤞🏼
How big is it?
18ftwidex40ftlong 8.5ft side height Approx. 12ft center height
How can I go about purchasing some Golden Limbertwiga? My grandpa talked about them. Very interested!
my dog ate my homework - LoL man.
The water is bad the fish is so stressed the fish didn’t eat the duck weed. Water temp is Bad Nitrites in the water is very bad thats fish gasping thats why the fish ignore the fish food.😢
Actually the goldfish do eat duckweed and they were happy enough to breed in the tank.
How is there a nitrites if there's so many duckweed?
This is an awful comment.
You can see the goldfish actively shoving its face further into the duckweed, rather than keeping in the open spot it made for itself.
Wow im just telling you the right way based in my experience the tank is lack of oxygen, it’s not the way how goldfish eats, you need to stop them sucking some air to avoid swim bladder decease, that’s air gasping, search and learn more, i want to share to you the exact way on how to keep a goldfish. Awful comment? Nah That’s real talk, have a great fish keeping you’ll.
that stinks. perhaps it is a blessing in disguise because now you got lots of room for more plants, lol shopping spree!
Mr. Dunn, would you have any scions from your growing trees to sell this year?
I am sorry, but no I do not. Actually , lost a few during the previous two weird winters we've had. I really need to look at everything this coming year and decide what I want to try and replace.
salad :)
Thanks.
Hi! Any update? I’m actually squeezing some the seeds out of some holly berries rn and came across your video. I’m hoping to get some little trees going, did you have any success?
I did not experience success, but it is probably due to some error on my my part. I think maybe the berries may not have been ripe enough. It would be worth trying again, but I probably won't do it this year.
@@stephendunn4942 Thank you for updating in the comments. I am also trying to germinate these seeds via the cold stratification method. May your days be warm, and your drinks be cool.

Hi Stephen My 2 year old Golden Limbertwig has been a vigorous grower on mm106 rootstock. Hopefully in a couple more years I'll get to taste one.
Great! Since you will get some before I do, let me know how they taste. Do you think they may take a year or two of production to reach their full taste potential?
It's always hard to tell which varieties will taste great right from the start and which ones take a couple of seasons to produce good fruit. When it comes to growing apples patience is a virtue. :) @@stephendunn4942
green house looks awesome! great idea tying down those sapotes :)

What are the red berries on my dogwood tree in north Georgia?
Those are the dogwood fruit. Each one has a seed that you can harvest to grow more dogwoods. If you leave them on the tree the birds will thank you.
Great sharing
Dog woods are probably going to be my fav to guerrilla garden. 😂
