Disassembling 1911: Bushing first vs. Slide Stop first
Just another 1911 field strip video, longer, boring...er, and uncut. See me waste time in REAL TIME.

1911 Full Length Guide Rod Field Strip & Reassembly

This is a demonstration on how I disassemble and reassemble a 1911 that uses a full length guide rod instead of a GI style guide rod. This is the way I’ve found works best for me.
How to avoid the 1911 Idiot Scratch

Quick demonstration showing how I field strip and reassemble a 1911 without getting the dreaded “Idiot Scratch”.
Quickest way to field strip and reassemble a 1911 (Parody)

This is the FASTEREST way to field strip your 1911 handgun. This is for .45 ACP 1911s ONLY. If you do this with any other 1911 JMB will come down from heaven and give you a lick.
Colt O1911C and O1970A1CS Comparison

Table top comparison of two popular series 70 reproduction pistols from Colt’s Mfg.
Wow! Great way to do this the HARD way! Don’t do it this way. Follow the manual and release the spring tension first!
Our expectations are those of the 1960s and 1970s, the reality is gunsmithing pride rarely exists today. In regards to Colt, they had some of the best gunsmiths in the world as did Smith and Wesson. Unfortunately, they have all passed and that younger generation of the time were not interested in becoming protégés of those skilled craftsman. Lost art. Quality in fitting and finishing is not very good today. I will agree that the metals of today are better, but that’s where it ends. Plastic is where it’s at and I own a bunch of them 😂. One last thing , Senoran Desert Institute is a scam and shouldn’t have the word gunsmith in their vocabulary. Good vid my friend.
Thank you.
I can't recommend this method.
First time I've ever seen someone do this way, releasing the spring pressure first would make it less of a chore
I "idiot scratched" my brand-new beautiful PM-7... Grrrrr! But it is still a thing of beauty. Live and lean... (sometimes the hard & expensive way).
Have not seen this method, easier to take the spring plug and spring out first.
In your defense, Mark Novak field strips M1911's the same way you demonstrated on his Anvil 0107 episode, though he did it in about one second. To those who have never viewed a Novak episode, check him out, he's amazingly entertaining.
Remove mag FIRST, then rack the slide to ensure it's clear.
I've never seen this way of field stripping a .45. I'm going to try it. But I'll wait until I get my new glasses so I can find the parts that go zoom. You just know that they will go zoom on the first attempt.
LOL TOO LATE!
I really someone would explain/demonstrate how to set the slide stop.
Very nice semi autmatic Pistol ❤ thank you for this Video and greetings from Germany.
I’ve already put the idiot scratch on mine. Oh well.
In my opinion, Colt factory finishes have not been as good since the early '90s. Too many little imperfections for a top tier manufacturer.
thanks for the tip. that is a GORGEOUS pistol.
I don’t understand many of the negative comments here. While the title might be a little off (I don’t see this method helping prevent an idiot scratch), the creator did a fine job presenting an alternative takedown method for a tightly fitted 1911. Most of my 1911’s I field strip the traditional way. My Colt Hawk has a fitted barrel bushing. No way I can turn that thing without a wrench and my understanding was the field strip procedure demonstrated here by the author helped preserve that tight fit. I could be wrong. I almost always am. Either way, great video and a beautiful Colt.
A piece of tape worked for me
nice lecture will save this video for future purposes
I purchased the 01911C .. and now i think i want the O1911CSS also..
Thank you
I agree with @amclean1948 That is the worse and hardest way I've ever seen to take down a 1911. Furthermore, I buy my guns to use for my enjoyment, it's a tool, it will get some scratches in normal use. I don't polish the face of my hammer either!
I've never seen this method of disassembly and as a former Navy Torpedoman that worked with Gunners Mates during the early 80s, I never saw them break down one like this ever. Gunners Mates ran the armory on ships and shore bases.
Mine is a 73B and the controls are matte.
A much better way is to lock thr thum safety so the slide is locked from moving rearward, then push down on the sprinf plug and rotate the bushing to 8 o clock. That releases the spring plug. Now you can take the safery off and move the slide back to the slight half moon to the slide stop hole. That way, you're not fighting the recoul spring tension. Your way is much harder because you're fighting the recoil sprinf tension and trying to insert the slide stop. The proper way to push in the slide stop is to use two thumbs (both hands). One thumb pushes the slide stop by the front portion where the round pin goes through. Another thumb pushed on the part that pops in and prevents the rear part from sliding across the frame, causing the idiot scratch.
The slide stop plunger on my Springfield Mil-Spec is always reluctant to give way to allow the slide top to snap into place. I have taken to using a flat precision screwdriver to push the pin back so that the slide stop snaps back into place. And, like so many other people are saying, I always take out the recoil spring first and replace it and the plug last. I use a Wilson Combat flat wire full length guide rod and recoil spring in my 1911.
I think you did a pretty good job. Thanks!
Why spend all this on disassembly & reassembly? All we need to see is the reinsertion of the slide stop. Respect your viewers’ time.
Worst disassembly of a 1911 that I've ever seen.
Don’t u have to stick a paperclip to remove spring and barrel? Newbie w/1911 here.
Do not borrow your gun. I did and got that 🖍️😂
Great video. The first time I took mine apart I was kind of wondering if this was a possibility. Thanks for confirming, and for demonstrating both methods very well.

I have never disassembled my 1911's like this. The last thing I do is install the slide spring, why fight the spring while trying to assemble. To each his own I guess...
Practice more, not this way
No.
Well done
NICE!
This guy has no idea how to do this.
3:22 what is this wizardry?
with a series 70 1911's with that really tight barrel bushing. this can be the easier way to disassemble it.
Your not doing it correctly
Nice video! Some bushings are hard to rotate. I have an Ed Brown and and Smith & Wesson PC that you need a bushing wrench. There are some good ones that have an extra tab on the wrench that keeps the recoil spring plug from flying as you are rotating the barrel bushing. regards, NS.
You never was in the military that handle the 45, Am I right? Story, when I use to teach Navy quals on the 1911, If they was that carful in taking it apart, they fail. See movie of "Forest Gump" with M-14.
Shaken
Don't let your nephew borrow it, is number one way to avoid it.
"How to avoid the 1911 Idiot Scratch?" Keep it in the box.😆
Best disassembly and reassembly I’ve seen so far.
Sir you just did that the hardest way possible and I don’t understand why?! Good looking pistol though.
Doesn’t look much different.
I think it's mostly internal diffrences.
