BirdDog PLAY: Product Overview and Networking TIPS!
I've been producing with OBS for 4 years. Coming to vmix this year, its much better but I think usability and fast setup is for sure easier with OBS, Vmix does have a lot of lacking program shortcuts and fast setup processes. Aside from that, perfect
What if you don't have a DHCP server running on your network? Can I use link local instead of DHCP?
Hey, is there any chance to get this setup running with a P120? Seems like there's no LTS firmware version available which is required by the Companion module. On the first try, we totally corrupted the firmware of our P120 when connecting it to Companion...
Hi. I agree with the things you say in the video. Personally for me a combination of vmix as basic tool and obs as secondary is the best thing. OBS thanks to community has some things that for some years until now the vmix users write and ask in vmix forum "future features" and wait if when and if never to be implemented into vmix in a more professional than the free users/developers 3rd party plugins that can do the job not perfect but they can! For example the ndi plugin that can transform everything to ndi output compared to vmix that cannot. The much better/detailed chroma keyer compared to vmix chroma keyer. The new plugin that can stream multiple destinations rtmp/srt compared to 4 to vmix and users ask for more all these years. For many years the users ask for more overlay channels than 4 and a developer does this for free in OBS!!!.Vmix has a lot better/much better audio management and also audio buses and vmix call and now zoom plugin. OBS can support for streaming also amd hw encoder, when vmix is stucked to nvdia only. Vmix multicorder and replay are unique. Yes vmix is also my first sw video switcher and also my 24/7 playout machine but also OBS is the best companion to cover vmix`s deficiencies. Of course there is difference to use a free product and not have anyone to "blame" for bugs compared to a commercial product that you pay to have also stabillity and support
Great video! Be Blessed in Jesus Name!
Is there a tutorial for beginners? I've been tasked with creating an NDI network for a podcast studio and there is so much jargon in this video it's hard to follow. I completely understand that I'm not the target audience for this specific video, but I'm curious if you've create the most barebones, basic video explaining the terminology for beginners like me. Thank you!
Well now that I found out that I'm just a bag of water to you. I will be exiting this video and will never return to your channel.
Thank you, Jon!
how to setup 2 two camera birddog sir
When connecting the PLAY to a home router, I can access the webpage with a laptop. Then I change the PLAY config to fixed IP Then I change the laptop config to fixed IP, Connecting both directly with ethernet, The laptop can ping the play with windows cmd, BUT the webpage is not working in chrome or edge. 1) Why does the webpage does not work? 2) How to reset the play back such that it can be accessed and controlled? When using another PLAY, Updating fw to .30 via router connection, Keeping DHCP IP but setting fallback to a fixed IP, and configuring the laptop the the same fixed ip network, the webpage does work with a direct connection. 3) how to recover the first PLAY, without CEC device, such that I can update fw and use the same ip config approach?
Three questions, 1. How do you handle a network (Cisco 9300) that has layer 3 boundaries between control and cameras? Real example, the baseball field, basketball complex, etc all have gateways between buildings. I realize we can layer 3 multicast but can we unicycle as well? 2. Any issues running Dante on the same network assuming it's a layer 2 network setup correctly for NDI? 3. Can I use multicast on some cameras and unicast on others? This customer site is also using a Tricaster for control during sports. 4. Can I use layer 3 multicast routing.
Great review! Love the details!
1/3 of the way through, enjoying the video!
Hi can I use this to decode NDI over the internet from other locations? Or does it have to be on the same local network? Thanks
NDI over the internet requires the use if NDI Bridge between sites. Then Play could see sources from Bridge on your network.
you are a wealth of knowlege, sad to not have have you still making that new new!
VMix from LiveStream Studio 5 years ago.
I bought a BirdDog camera and encoders based on how easy it was to ask questions live on your show. You will be missed!
BirdDog will never be the same without you mate
Hey man! I appreciate that a lot. Thanks for taking a chance on me. It changed me forever too!
Wow, Jon!! Big things ahead I'm sure. Would love to connect about what's ahead. BirdDog has such an amazing team and technology - always watching.

A classy final word. Best wishes ahead, Jon! Thanks for all of your contributions to the community, and the experience, knowledge, and insights you shared!
Much appreciated! Thanks for the kind words. They mean a lot!
Jon! Good luck with whatever is next. Thanks for everything - you’ve done great stuff here. Who would have thought you could build a community out of a tech support show?! We will miss you! Peace!
I know, right?! Wild stuff, but I have been so honored to have you and others walk along side me and make it what it is. Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it.
Going to miss not having you around mate, thanks for everything you've done at BirdDog and the BirdDog community. I sincerely hope our paths cross again. Stay in touch my friend!
Yes sir! Thanks for being great to work with, and all the times you stuck your neck out for me. I greatly appreciate it, and hope to cross paths again, sooner than later, eh?
@@birddogjon the pleasure was mine mate and I will let you know the minute I am in Michigan next.
Low end switches also don’t support IGMP, meaning that all multicast streams get blasted to all ports…which is really bad with NDI.
I loved using VMix. I really wish they allowed you to pop out your audio and video sources. Especially when all the outputs aren't using the native video outputs (i.e. NDI and/or streaming). WIth multiple monitors, it would be nice to have the audio inputs on one monitor, video on another, and the switching in/out on a third.
Hi Jon! Hope you are doing well. All your video are help full for he industry folks. Wishing you a good luck. i need your small help on controling the Birddog p100 camera over TCP IP. I'm using a hercules and putty tools for sending the command to camera over TCP. TCP ports i'm using are 8080 and 6791. I could not able to control teh camera. is there is any docuent i could refer? Any help would be greatly appriciated!

How do you factory reset this device
There is no official reset process. What is it that you need done to the device? Best to update the FIRMWARE to .30 and that will get it mostly back to factory settings.
Nice stuff, Jon! Can you link the network guidelines to the video description here? That might be super handy. Thanks for all the excellent stuff you do!
Of course. Here is a link to the article that includes those downloads: birddogtv.zohodesk.com/portal/en/kb/articles/networking-outline-recommendations
Thanks, Jon!
The saying in England about marmite is you either love it or you hate it
I truly am in the middle. I didn't hate it - but love is not the correct word.
Aw thanks Jon. Love ya mate!
Back at ya, buddy.
It is available for Mac
No, currently it is only for PC
Hello, do you have an estimated date to make the program available for Mac?
My entire system is Mac I am in the USA I love the p240 computer but I am facing difficulty due to the Mac system is there anything you can do to help me
@@SanaciondeFamilia No there is no launch date for a MAC versions of this software.
Are there any POE++ injectors, that would work with my M4250 and pass thru NDI video?
I saw your ticket this morning. Check your email!
Morning! Just for a change, I'm out on a show.
I've been a professional user of vMix Pro 4K for the past 5 years, so completely sold on it. I haven't and wouldn't use OBS in place of vMix, but vMix does currently lack one significant comparative feature and that is the ability to stream to UA-cam using HLS. HLS offers a much cleaner image, with better sports motion, over that offered by RTMP. It's a big omission from vMix 27, considering UA-cam HLS ingest has been around for quite some time now. Our current solution has been to run OBS and vMix on the same hi-spec tower PC and use NDI to output vMix to OBS, with OBS purely acting as the stream-out to UA-cam. It works prefectly, but vMix should not require this processor-hungry workaround.
Hey Jon, It still does look a little soft on UA-cam. But I also noticed that when you are moving your head it looks like it is dropping frames. Very strange.
Watch at 35:55. freeze up with video, not audio.
Hi Jon, best regards from Germany, again! Tried FM out yesterday - and it tells me about a new firmware for my P200 - version 5.5.112 - that supports FleetManager... Do you know anything about release dates?
such a useful tool, its saved me multiple times when working with large AV systems!
HI i mentioned that you videos are coming out so soft and out of focus. You fixed it for following videos but now it is back to being blurry
I don't mean to be this guy... but have you tried NewBlue Captivate??
20:05 I found Vmix and watched some videos. Then started looking for resellers. Turned out there was one in lower Alabama named Tom Sinclair. I was in orange beach and a friend of mine and I went to see Tom. We got to sit in on his show and I am sold on him and Vmix. Have purchased several systems.
You could change your background lights to blue, and key the blue, then you could wear green.
I quite enjoyed this "stripped back version of the show!. I run Zoom ISO pro in our studio, I've never needed to route a Zoom ISO output to a decoder before but am intrigued now. In one studio the isolated audio goes to an Allen&Heath SQ5 audio console via DANTE, and in the other the NDI feeds including the embedded audio go directly to VMix without any issues. Will have to try sending a feed to a BD studio, BD Mini and a BD Play (I dont have a quad or any other converters)
OK I did some testing. Sending Zoom ISO to a BD Play, audio was clean. I changed between 32K and 48K audio in zoom ISO and saw this reflected in the play dashboard. The play handled both without issue. Then I tried a BD Mini running fw NDI_4_V_3.6.3 audio was terrible. lots of clicking and distorted pitch shifted audio. Tried both 32K and 48K, tried different resolutions and frame rates out of zoom iso, tried the proxy decoding as well nothing made the audio clean. Tested the mini by decoding screen capture from a pc and audio was clean no problem. Repeated all this with a BD Studio running NDI_4_V_3.6.4 with the same results as the mini. -Perhaps a backwards compatibility issue between NDI 5 and NDI 4?
Hopefully you do something about P200 cams and vMix chroma keying! I did it in a very decent green room but was very disappointed about the poor video quality
This might be an interesting experiment, but I am usually an Anti-Green-Screen guy, mostly because I think it looks cheesy. It's a great idea for a show, though! Thanks!
Hey did you manage to get data sources working with google sheets to pull map city names into a ticker?
No, I didn't, but truthfully, I haven't spent the time to get into it like I need to.
Thanks for the show Jon. I would love a cloud demo. I’m currently investigating an installation where I want to have 6x P120 (or x120) and 3x encoders installed in a venue across 3 rooms and have so many questions around things like PC specs, best router to go with the M420 and how to configure all the options in cloud. I’ve tried the trial but it’s a minefield.
Cloud Demo is on the shortlist. Need to get Jake back on the show
Because it is better. End of discussion.
Haha! In many ways, yes.
A well presented and informative piece - many thanks
Wow! Thanks for the kind words! It's really appreciated.
What are you using to do the chat overlays? Is the VMix social? Or some stream yard thing?
Chat overlays are through Streamyard.
You could make buttons on your streamdeck or x keys change the position of your pip, but personally I would reduce the size of the map, and stick the map the QR and the camera in front of a nice background. Another tip start your layers somewhere round layer 2-5 so that you can add things behind as well as in front.
