I have a 2017 iMac with a beautiful display, it runs on Monterey 12.7.6 If I buy a new Mac mini would I be able to use my old iMac as a display?
Phil, the most helpful hint for me in the whole of your video is how to start the process of launching the Luna software. The fact that you should start the iMac and then the installed secondary Luna software is the key. I floundered at this point especially when the new iMac updated and blew the system up. Now I can start again with your method of starting the systems up. Many thanks.
I currently start the main Mac Studio first, then the iMac. You should be able to start in either order. Just allow time to sense the other copy of Luna Display on your network.
@ Many thanks for replying to my post. That’s a first for me and shows how much interest you take in us viewers. I appreciate the advice.
My wife has a 27” iMac that I broke with Open Core Legacy Patcher. It’s currently running OS15 under the patch. Will this dongle still work with this modified iMac? Anyone know?
The 'dongle' goes into whatever 'other' Mac you have i.e. M1-4 Mini or Studio or MacBook. The iMac runs a program 'Luna Display Secondary'.
I have a 2015 iMac running monterey 12.7.6 and would like to use it as a monitor for my m4 MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.1.1, would this configuration work?
Yes, you can check the requirements here help.astropad.com/article/157-system-requirements?sca_ref=3948717.ToH2p0eo7q
Great info! Thank goodness for UA-cam’s hold down screen for double time speed view.
Yes. I like to play videos at a variety of speeds as necessary.
I got my Mini M4 to operate on my 2015 27” iMac with Monterey, using the Luna Display dongle until the M4 decided to update to 18.2. Now it’s all gone to pot. The iMac restarted in Monterey mode and now I have a couple of Luna dialog boxes asking about the connection to the M4 and I can’t get rid of either of them. I can’t even get the M4 to connect to my other monitor via HDMI. Not happy after spending all day on it.
/sounds like you need to fix something on your M4 Mac mini. Have you checked the display settings?
@ turned out that the HDMI cable from the Mini to the spare monitor wasn’t good enough. I have replaced it with a Display Port to USBC cable and that monitor is working properly. Tomorrow I will have a go at restarting the iMac and connecting it to the Mini. The dialog boxes that came up were asking me if I wanted peer to peer or WiFi so hopefully I can reconnect without them showing. Many thanks Phil for your guidance and I will check the settings.
Does the operating system in any way affect the use of these connection systems between Macs? I have read that Apple has restricted their use to macOS versions between Sierra and Catalina. Thank you in advance.

Hi Phil, I cannot get my unit to connect. I have tried all methods and used the luna trouble shooter and can not get my unit to connect to the old imac. Any suggestions?
Follow all the steps in this video. Both need to be on the same network or directly connected using one of the cable options. Contact Astropad via the website link in the description for further support.
Thanks Phill, it did a firmware update and now is working. I am still having a few issues. If I want to come out of luna just to use my imac webcam I don't see an easy way to get back in unless I have another monitor or I do a reboot? Also, my wireless keyboard and mouse loose connectivity when I switch over like that. Is there an easy fix for these two issues? If so that would be awesome.
@@ES-yi8vv they are exactly the challenges of using Headless Mode. Basically it's much easier to have a monitor on the Mac Mini.
Yippee! I think they have fixed this with macOS 15.2. Certainly I have used both Apple dictation and voice control for a couple of days now and there has been no problem. I have sent a positive feedback message to Apple to let them know that the problem appears to have been resolved and to thank them. I have only been asking for about three years 🤣 Having said this, thank you for this really helpful shortcut which I can also rely upon if the issue occurs again.
A fix is not mentioned in the 15.2 release notes, but I'm with you in keeping my fingers crossed.
When selecting "4K Output Select" -- i only have the option of 25p - but my software wants 24p is this an issue? you use 60p?
it relates to selecting either NTSC or PAL output format
Thank you for this great video! So... just to be clear... this month I'm getting a new M4 iMac and I will want to use my 2017 iMac as a secondary display as you are. Luna display will allow this? The only part that is fuzzy to me is the connect by ethernet section to me... a little more clarification please? I thought that was what the Luna display was for.... sorry I'm a noob.
your 2 Mac's need to connect somehow, I recommend using Ethernet via your router, but you can use other wired connections as shown in the video, or WiFi of course, but I recommend wired to minimize any display lag.
@@HelpfulPhil Got it and thank you!
Thank you so much for this !! I thought I had to buy a new machine and I fixed the problem thanks to your video ! My issue was partly due to the problem described by you and an air bubble .
Fantastic. Worked for me.
Hi! I have a question regarding peripherals. I want to connect Mac-to-Mac (wired, thunderbolt) and be able to use the trackpad from the secondary Mac. Let's say I am connecting Mac mini (primary) to Macbook(secondary, extends the Mac Mini's screen). How do the trackpad from Macbook act ? Is it totally disabled, or active only within the extended screen (in this case the screen area of Macbook) or active for the whole area (Mac Mini + Macbook) ? + the same question for the keyboard..Thanks
Though not ideal, you can use the trackpad & keyboard of the MacBook, you may find limited functionality. It would also work across both screens. You need to consider how you're going to wake and enter passwords etc for the Mac Mini.
Luna Display did not work for me - I had to connect the 2 macs with a thunderbolt cable to resole low res and laggy images on the secondary mac, but then i was stuck with keyboard issues when the keyboard stopped working even with a direct cable link. Turn off Luna and it works. I did not want to waste anymore time with it . Instead I learnt how the use Mission control and spaces where i can have multiple displays on the same monitor
Mission Control /Spaces does not give you the power of 2 screens working in extended mode though.
@@philbinks I tried on last time, used wired mouse and keyboard on the secondary mac so then I could turn off bluetooth. So far so so, the primary mac is working as it should with bluetooth keyboard and mouse and I now have an extended display!
Hi Phil, following your excellent videos and advice I bought a Luna Display plug and now connected my Macmini M4 Pro to my 27” 5k iMac and the two are working together nicely, it’s a joy to behold, including being able to use the iMac SSD storage. However, I noticed when working with 4K videos that the playback of the 4K videos heavily pixelated, the picture being broken down in big squares, like 4mm square pixels while playing. It is so badly in fact, that I am now returning to do most of my video again when editing by connecting my Macmini to my 4K Monitor. Is that because the connection between the two computers, the 27” iMac is compromised? I am using an Ethernet connection. What do you think? Have I missed something? Thanks for putting all the work in you excellent videos,
Hi Phil, I've got the Luna app set up and I can move anything I want from my Mac Studio display screen to my old iMac screen - perfect. However, once connected (via USB), my iMac screen background becomes the same as my Studio display (unlike yours)....plus, I was hoping to have access to my HD and connected drives on the iMac for storage as it's 4TB - is this possible and, if so, where have I gone wrong? Are the drives only available through the ethernet connection? Is it possible to set up a Thunderbolt bridge to achieve this? Otherwise, it works perfectly - thanks for any help or advice.
I don’t understand what you mean by ‘the background becomes the same..’ You can access your HDD on your iMac, search my Luna Display playlist for the video on how to set it up.
@@philbinks I just meant that my background 'wallpaper' that is on my Mac Studio also transfers to being the same on my iMac (I'm not 'mirroring' but that's what it appears to be like, without anything else on the desktop (hard drives etc.)), whereas on your demo, it doesn't......which is strange. I also watched how you set up your HDD on your video and, even though my file sharing is set up as yours (read/write), my Bonjour computers is already there (with my attached drives) but can't see my iMac drives.
@@127bradfordroad you can set the wallpaper per desktop, just right click the desktop! Click on the 'Network' in the Finder to see all your machines on the same network. Make sure external volumes are Shared on the iMac before connecting with Luna Display, use Get Info to check.
@@HelpfulPhil Phil, I appreciate the time that you're taking to answer these questions. When I move my cursor over to my iMac screen, it is mirrored - even though I've clicked in Luna to have it display as a second screen. So, if I right-click and get details on my iMac, all the info is for my Mac Studio! I think that the best thing to do is to uninstall and try again as all the settings and preferences seem to be correct. I can use it as a second screen, this works perfectly, so I'm close......but I do need to get access to my drives. I'll try again over the weekend and let you know how I get on. I'll also try the ethernet option too (but I'll have to connect the Mac Studio directly to the iMac - my router is miles away unfortunately!
@@127bradfordroad I think you fundamentally mistake Luna Display as allowing you to use your iMac normally! This is not the case, the iMac becomes a screen only, with no access to the iMac applications, only the hard drive(s).
I apologize if this is redundant but this is not my area of expertise. I just purchased a 2017 27" iMac with the intention of using it as a monitor for a 2020 Macbook Pro. Can the iMac be used for this purpose in this case?
Wow, thank you, this is exactly the information that I needed!
My new Mac Mini M4 (2024) would not connect to my iMac (2019), in any way, using either of the USB-C ports on the front of the Mac Mini for the Luna Display. As soon as I plugged it into a thunderbolt port on the back of the Mac Mini it worked immediately and flawlessly. Posting this to spare others with a similar configuration of the hours I spent trying to sort it out. I have reported this apparent anomaly to Astropad.
Plugging the Luna Display dongle into a Display Port powered USB-C is required. Not all USB-C's are Display port compatible. Here's their guidance page help.astropad.com/article/223-luna-and-adapters?sca_ref=3948717.ToH2p0eo7q
Phil this is really excellent and thank you for all your hard work. I have a new Min M4 and an old IMac 27 2017. Id like to use Luna. However all 3 Thunderbolt ports on back of Mini are used up. 1- To Apple Display, 2 to Thunderbolt4 hub, 3 to External SSD (that will not work at high speed through the Hub). So can I connect the luna either to a USBC/Thunderbolt port on the Thunderbolt Hub? or via a USBC to USBA converter again into a USBA port on the Thunderbolt hub OR can I simply connect it into the front USBC ports on the MacMini (these are not thunderbolt ports). If I can then I will order using your link and then simply connect both Macs to my router using Ethernet.
Great questions - basically you might need to take a risk as ideally the Luna Display dongle should be plugged into a Display port capable USB-C port i.e. Thunderbolt. If your Thunderbolt 4 hub states that it supports displays I think it's worth a try. Here's the tech specs link for you to check: help.astropad.com/article/157-system-requirements?sca_ref=3948717.ToH2p0eo7q
The issue arose again for me today. I tried this solution and it worked. Looking in the forums, a lot of other people are having the same problem as well. There are a number of potential other solutions which have worked for some people. If Safari is open, some people find that closing it resolves the problem. Also, some people are finding that temporarily changing to a different language model (i.e. different country/region) for dictation works as well. Others have mentioned changing the microphone source in settings several times as a potential solution. Others have found that there seems to be a link with the connection of Bluetooth headphones/earphones. I have been asking Apple for about three years to resolve this problem to no avail. If this shortcut works reliably than this is a game changer and makes Apple dictation usable without having to restart the Mac every time. I can't say that I have tried it with voice control yet but I would imagine that it should work with that as well. Thanks again for posting this very helpful video 😊
HI Phil, thank you for this video. I just got a new MacMini M4 and a Studio display. My older, faithful late 2012 iMac has the 3TB with Fusion and has been great, however I was stuck on Catalina and for security on websites, I needed to move on. Do you know if using Luna and having the displays on the same network would still be as secure or will using my old IMac as a display on the network compromise the security on my Mini? Thanks.
I personally wouldn’t worry about security if you keep your new Mac up to date. Remember security breaches are usually down to the user!
Can I use my iMac HDD as a Time Machine disk for my Mac Mini?
I guess you could, though using an external HDD would be better. If your iMac HDD dies (unlikely) you could have a back-up of both your iMac and Mac Mini.
Great advice, I now use my new Macbook M4 as my day to day machine with my iMac 2015 as a second screen. The great thing is that my iMac was my Plex Server and I was concerned about losing a machine that is always powered on if I want to watch TV and having my laptop with me. I can now use my laptop for work with the second screen then disconnect it and my Plex Server machine (my iMac) still works great.
That's a great example using your old iMac.
Thank you so much for posting this video. Glad to see that other people have been having the same problem that I have for the last two or three years. So far I’ve had to reboot my Mac to get around this issue. Will try the solution suggested and also changing the language if it doesn’t work for me. Great video thank you.
I silly question. Can Luna display use on MacBook Air M3 as two thunderbolts are very close, if plus Luna display into one, can I still use another thunderbolt? Thanks.
Yes. I'm pretty sure that the USB-C/Thunderbolt ports will be the same distance apart as my MacBook Pro, which easily has enough space for a second USB-C device/cable.
Takes a while to set it up, and the delay from speak to shutter release is slow. The Insta 360 Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2 set up with the touch of a button and there’s less shutter lag. Maybe Apple can checkout the Insta 360 and improve the iPhone Voice Control Shutter.
Thank you, Phil for taking the time to document this process.
Thanks Phil, i've just subscribed. Im in the process of updating all my machines and my lovely imac2017 is nowhere near as good as these new apple silicone machines - but my 5k screen is definitely worth hanging on to . I have a macbook pro m1 max now and will test this out with that and if all good I think I will invest in a new m1 max studio mac - thanks for this video!!
That was tremendously helpful to me. Thanks!!!
To anybody who owns this machine. Remove plastic from inside of stock handle, saw it off or get aftermarket one. Plastic in stock one drastically changes taste.
It works with the M4 Mini as well.
The iMac goes to sleep and then Luna Display doesn't wake when moving the mouse or clicking on the keyboard. Is there a key bind that wakes luna display up? Or should sleep on the iMac be turned off?
You need to make sure you're waking both the iMac and your main Mac. Each separately needs to sense an input (most likely from Keyboard & Mouse), unless the main Mac has temporarily gone to sleep whilst in Luna Display mode, in which case just reawaken the main Mac. I showed a different way of waking both here ua-cam.com/video/S55JuUOJcjY/v-deo.htmlsi=edHJdm6aW-H6JE00
Thankyou Phil , you broke it down so well
Thanks for the video. I have an old iMac that I like to use as a primary screen connected to Mac mini. I don’t have a second screen. How should I configure Luna display to get it to work?
Here's the video on that...ua-cam.com/video/Cp2uJAVjsuE/v-deo.html
i’m not sure if i’m understanding correctly; so you must use the Luna Display as a 2nd display? or i could, for example, use a 2019 21.5 as the Primary (only) display with a new mac mini? i’m having a hard time finding this specific info.
Luna Display is the application and hardware which allows you to use your iMac as a screen. Using the iMac as a single screen with Luna Display is called Headless mode. This video might help. ua-cam.com/video/Cp2uJAVjsuE/v-deo.html
Nice one
I am curious: Can I use a 2008 24" iMac, running El Capitan 10.11.6 as ekstra monitor for my 2017 27" iMac, running Ventura 13.7.2? And connect with ethernet cable. Later I have a plan to use the 27" together with a MacMini M4.
Have a look at these requirements to see if they fit your situation: help.astropad.com/article/157-system-requirements?sca_ref=3948717.ToH2p0eo7q
Thanks for these videos Phil. I am definitely buying an M4 mini and I am also hoping that I will be able to use Luna Display on my 2015 Monterey 27” which is partitioned with Bootcamp to operate Windows 10 and Monterey. I have it on good authority that it is possible to install Lunar on both operating systems although support for that arrangement may be limited. I will update here once I get it setup-or not 😊.
If you need to use Bootcamp then that feature will come from the new M4, whilst you use the iMac 27" as just a monitor. You can't use the computing/processor features of the iMac when in Luna Display mode.
Thank you so much for the advice. I need all the help i can get 😂
one issue wirth mentioning - this dock doesnt support more than one monitor as far as i can see.... i have a dual screen set up with 2723DE and 2723D and it only mirrors on them, rather than extend to both.... (macbook pro 2023)
That's probably your Mac Settings.
Thanks Phil. You fixed my dictation. And you're right - Dictation is brilliant, a real timesaver. ANDY Down under IN SYDNEY.
This does look very interesting. I’ve just ordered a Luna dongle and I’m considering getting a second hand Apple Watch (series 7) - could you make a more detailed video explaining the necessary steps to do this (for an Apple Watch newbie) - thank you Phil 🙏🙏

@ ok Great - thank you. Next week I should have my two new toys and will try it 👌
What OS do you need on the target iMac
Thank you for your videos, very helpful. I have a top fully speckled out 2017 27” iMac, but I need more power and don’t want to get rid if it. So I was planning to buy Luna display and tuck a M4 MacMini Pro underneath it to use iMac as a monitor for the MacMini, but at the same time still use the iMac as a second computer. Would this work? Is this a poor compromise as it might limit the display quality for the Mac mini? Desk space is the issue here otherwise I would simply buy a monitor. Thank you very much for any pointers you can give me.
See my other videos on Luna Display...you can use the iMac HDD as a storage drive but not use its applications or computing functions whilst it is connected with Luna Display. Of course you can use the iMac as normal, but not when it's being used as the display.
@@HelpfulPhil Thank you Phil, I just discovered your other videos and based on your advice I just ordered the Mac mini M4 pro, which promises to be so much more powerful than my 7 year old iMac. I am delighted I can prolong its life via the use of the screen. Thank you so much with your helpful videos and advice.
Hi Phil, thanks for your helpful advice. I really appreciate it. I have another question please. As I have not so long ago replaced the faulty internal ssd of my 27” iMac with a brand new 4TB ssd, would it be possible not only to use the iMac as a monitor via luna display but in addition use the iMac’s internal hard drive as an external drive for my Mac mini, so that in theory I don’t have install all the program again on my Mac mini M4 and thereby save space, basically I would be launching the programs from the iMac while working on my Mac mini. Is that a possibility? If the iMac can serve as a monitor why can’t the iMac ssd not serve as an external drive? Thank you for considering this potentially exiting prospect, which I imagine may help myself and others save money on purchasing an additional ssd and at the same time saving space on the Mac mini. 😊

Oh that’s great! Well there’s the solution right there!! Thanks!
Hi Phil, I have a 2020 iMac, with an Apple 27 inch lightening screen that is using both screens the same as you have, I also have a 27 inch late2015 iMac, now I want to buy a Mini both my iMacs can’t use the Apple system they had in place because they’re not old enough, that system eas ceased in 2014, would it be possible to use the lunar system to use my 2020 machine as the Mini monitor and leave the 27 lightening screen connected as it already is. Hope you can offer some advise
...not quite sure of your exact connection plans, but you can use Luna Display to connect ONE of your iMac's, and if your Mac Mini supports a second screen (quite likely), then you can also connect an Apple Display.
@@HelpfulPhil Thanks for that Info Phil, my intention is to connect my monitor to the Mac mini via a lightening connection, (the mini has 3 lightning connection,) as it is to my existing 2020 iMac , the use the 2020 was a second monitor using the Luna kit.is that the way to get them both working? as Ive never used a Luna.
@@njm20music you're getting your weather synonyms mixed up and therefore confused. Mac computers have Thunderbolt connections, not Lightening. Lightening was reserved for iOS devices, iPhones and iPads. Nope! you can only use ONE iMac as a monitor.
This is a really good video. What if someone is doing a live video, for example, I’m a Life Coach, and I could be in a live coaching session with a client on my Mac, could I use the Keynote green screen for examples during the life video chat?
... technology has moved on since this video, though of course it still works. I recommend you investigate Video Pencil on an iPad. Video Pencil allows you to actually write/draw on your video image. Heres a link: bit.ly/VideoPencil
my old i mac has two screens without having to buy an additional software!
In the UK in current economic times, seems a waste not to use these old imacs. The thing I've learned also is that the screens don't deteriorate at all, the HD is probably a lot slower that when you bought it and maybe the RAM also, but the screens? General quality of display, they were certainly built to last.
Right on! Economies around the world are the same.
