Great video! could you say what kind of treat rewards you are using for this kind of session?
THIS CHANNEL IS ACTIVE AGAIN!?!?!?! LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!!
I disagree with this message. Yes we need to have OPEN discussion about ETHICS. But this isn't possible if one side of the dog training world consistently misleads the public about the SCIENCE. Before we can have open discussion of ethics people need to have honest discussion about advantages, limitations, costs, risks of different training approaches/methods/tool. I think *ethical* and *science-based* balanced trainers need to go "on the offense" and counter the misinformation that is propagated about aversive methods/tools. Many force free trainers are totally incompetent and they blatantly lie to or emotionally manipulate owners. I've seen this first hand many times. That's not to say there aren't trainers that overuse/misuse/abuse aversive tools.
It is so going against of flow & current of the tings out there to shut things down in 2025. Everything on the face of earth have " a set of their own uniqueness " . So there is no way as to " one way, one size fit all" . We all should taking advantage of this era of internet , stay educated & keep on moving🙏🙏🙏🙏 Negativity is strong always. Don't give it more power than they have already. There is always a better outcome when we united. Thank Mr. Elis for all the things he does 💕💕💕
I am a " pet owner " who owns a working type of dog ( Cane Corso ). I simply play with him because he loves it and helps me build relationships, but also, it's help communicating with him. I want my dogs to thrive in our human world but just survive. For that, play is very important for me & my buddy. Also if i play with him in certain way, it will stimulate his with his mind which seemingly tired him in good way combinedwith physicalstimulation. Beside everything else, I just want thank Mr. Elis from the bottom of my heart for digesting & sharing his years of hard earned experience/ knowledge with us. What a privilege 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
great video! how to reverse this behavior? we have a dog that is quite intense and was reinforced like this. also already bitten a dog due to broken leash. it kinda reinforces itself all the time when crossing dogs on a walk, she reacts and the dog goes past.. its like a never ending story
Micheal, you're the best. I was totally amazed by you when I watched your Philosophy on Dog Training. I can't wait to get a new pup and use all the tools I have learned from you. It's not just the sit, down, stay stuff. It's all the knowledge that you posses when it comes to dog psychology. You're an amazing teacher, you have a gift.
Micheal is the best.
Yes! Thank you! You are a Master trainer and I always learn so much from your posts. -‘Othering’ is an epidemic.
Both sides were articulate and polite, but the nature of such opposing views can make the conversation feel quarrelsome, which might hurt feelings. I think most new dog owners listening to this radio show would likely have sided with the woman, given her strategy of replacing the e-collar with tools like the whistle she mentioned. However, Michael’s thoughtful analogy about discomfort in the sun adds an important layer to the discussion, reminding us that discomfort, while unpleasant, can serve a valuable purpose. Ultimately, it’s a nuanced conversation, and both perspectives offer valuable insights. Thanks for bringing this conversation to a wider audience, especially for those outside California.
I find most dog training a scam. Unnecessarily over complicating their program, to justify the ridiculous price tags
This makes the reinforcements very clear. Thank you. It’s fascinating to see Snug figure things out. Your narration answers all of my questions that pop up as I watch. Excellent. Also: Love his name. Snug the Joiner???
First person to get the Shakespeare reference, kudos 🙂
Great breakdown Michael. I appreciate the technical work and artful approach you have with dogs!
Learned a lot in this video! Great work Michael! Hope to be a dog trainer just like you both (Nate Schoemer and Michael Ellis) someday.
🐐
I think he is talking about a radio show a few years back…. The ban proposal failed.
❤️✊🏻👑🐶👏👏
Every time I watch Michael Ellis work, I learn something new. His ability to break things down is unmatched. Truly the GOAT of training trainers!
Has the potential to be the greatest dog training resource on UA-cam Thats for pet owner, and serious dog folks and trainers alike The dog training industry needs people like your self and Michael and less of the ideological lunatics spouting there dribble
It’s True
Something when watching your lessons both your UA-cam and Novice to Pro course. I have to subscribe to the source as well 😂
@@ngabonzimadieubon if ur interested in foundational information look up helmet raiser he's a very interesting individual with his own terminology and speak
Micheal Ellis is definitely awesome.
the best example of how the value of a video is not determined by perfect sound, cool background music and perfect camera setting. 🙂Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! If people come to see our work for the production value, they will be very disappointed 😂
Respectfully, how do you audit or know that the dog is “scared”? Could it be that the dog is confused? This is a high drive dog so it will react, but it also has a high social need, that is not being met by the handler. I see no influence over this dog. With no high level of influence and control, could it be the dog is perceiving itself as the leader? And reacting quite naturally? IMHO
The dog is afraid in the initial repetitions as evidenced by the uncommitted threat displays (piloerection and staccato barking), as well as his attempts at flight when pressed. He very quickly realizes he can control the situation through aggression and is very rapidly unafraid. The lack of influence by the handler is deliberate. We are developing a protection dog, so as I said in the video, things are happening here that would not happen (hopefully) with a companion dog on a walk. For instance, having the dog resolve the stress on his own, empowering his future responses to threat. With companion dogs this happens accidentally, as was described in the video. We are simply using the controlled setting of protection work to describe some of the mechanisms at play in reactivity (internal/external reinforcement, harness use, inadvertent encouragement from handler, etc), so that trainers and owners can be better equipped to prevent problems from getting started. Hope this makes sense.
@ Thank you for taking the time to lay out a very well-informed description of the video. I agree, and have to respectfully in some ways disagree in the sense that lack of influence from the handler, even though that is the intent I’m nervous about the relationship…could you ever explain or show how to get the right foundation so that you can interact with no influence with a high drive dog? You mentioned that “hopefully this will not happen” this may be the pivot point that more of a foundation is necessary to have the confidence on what the dog may be perceiving… This method demonstrated in the video makes sense to me under the context of first a strong foundational relationship is in place (Dog is a follower to the handler and the out command are absolute), which makes it possible to then use motivators to work with and interact (like in the video) with the dog to build confidence, etc….IMHO
@@christianhershman2786 The goal is not to have my high drive dog interact with no handler influence in the long run. This is a specific lesson for a young dog in protection, in which I want the dog to resolve his stress without my help, in response to a threat. You will also notice that I did support him after he responded appropriately in the end, but handler direction during the initial work can interfere with his interaction with the decoy. The dog in question, Snug, also has lots of training at this point (he is 13 months old in the video), so I can do this work without "losing control", as it were. Our membership service has detailed descriptions of exactly what we are doing here and why, this video is not meant as a tutorial on protection work, but rather a mechanism for describing factors that contribute to reactivity. Thanks for your thoughtful questions.
@ got it…thx, So this work is on top of a super strong foundation I.e a relationship without motivators, you have with this dog. These high drive dogs have a high social need… strong & authoritative leadership, first..IMHO🙏
Banning the ecollar because some people misuse them Would we like ban cars coz some people crash them lol
Class is in session
Yup
We combat poor quality ideas with better quality ideas
U Always learn something watching a trainer of this calibre
Othering is definitely the problem. Trying to actually address where the misunderstanding would at least be productive Our love and fascination of dogs is where we all start
Where can we find this radio show conversation recoding? Also, might as well reference episode 269 of the canine paradigm podcast.
"State of the Bay Emeryville Mayor John Bauters / E-Collar Ban for SF Dogs? / Author Sarah Ladipo Manyika"
Michel, i am a big fan and have seen a lot of your videos through youtube and other people like leerburg etc and I think you should definitely send out more videos (paid or free). I say this because not a lot of people have the gift of explaining and TEACHING like you do. Cheers and God bless. 😊
Regardless of whether my dog was a service dog or acting as a pet dog, I valued play with my dogs, I could never understand why people would get a dog and not play with it, then they complain when the dog becomes destructive due to boredom. The 'off switch' is important for all dogs to learn, working dog or not. Now that I'm finally starting to get into French Ring with my Malinois play has taken on whole new meaning. I've always had high drive working or sporting dogs and listening to you and Ivan has validated what I have always known.
I see you everywhere! Love reading your comments.
Thank you for this. This reinforces the way I got my Malinois past her reactivity from fear, she had never been desensitized to environmental stimuli or objects. It also explains how she got the way she was before I got her, she was like the dogs Agusto Deoliveira handles, highly reactive to everything and everyone. I use both a 2.5 HS prong and a flat collar with a safety between the two.
If you know what's this is all about, you can learn more from this four minute clip than from a four hour video of another trainer, Michael is simply the best....
I’m 58 years old with a 4 month old GSD. I’ve recently given away my treadmill thanks to your videos. I love working out with Cleo now. 👍🏻
I'm loving my first online course and already correcting the many things I did wrong with my Gator. I'm looking at building a training room and wondering what size this room is?
I want to come back as his dog and play with him!
Looks smooth, elegant and all.....but I'm sure that this is the product of fine aspects of a lot of things strung together....derived from years of experience...Thanks Michael, I have learned a lot from you...
Who needs to go to a gym? Just play with the dog
fantastic work great drive and great handler interaction
Why so few subscribers??.. u deserve so much more.. guess they see all ur work under leerburg ??I know I watch a lot there..(especially Michael and Forrest)..brilliant trainers..
I think the rest command was for ME..lol.. Tugging is tiring work..
Awesome.. what great engagement.. I need to focus on this.. try energise my 11 month old puppy.. definetely don't have these high energy levels..
incredible engagement! is that a Leerburg firehose perhaps? ;D
hi i have been training my saint bernard using yes as the marker and reward but not for the release word combined ... i have been using " break " as the release word which stops some of the quicker behaviours like you do here ...could i change this or would it crate confusion ? thank you hard to attend your school iam in south australia
Use "good" to keep the behavior in place and mark the reward, yes for a reward marker and also to break the command.
Superb! Micheal ellis is the best dog trainer I've ever come across. If your into operant conditioning, food and toy reward marker training, then this man can teach you to take your skills to the next level. And if your into competition dog sports, then look no further than this guy and his videos.
I agree
Great work,thank you .
smooth! well done ;)
LOVE LOVE LOVE thank you Michael Ellis!
Like watching a martial art expert.
