House on the Hill - A South African jazz community showcase channel.
The historically significant South African suburb of Sophiatown is home to House on the Hill. Already a well known jazz rehearsal venue in Johannesburg, this great sounding room has been upgraded into a safe, intimate studio space in which musicians can have their creative projects filmed and recorded.
House on the Hill aims to offer a platform for musicians to continue creating new works alongside documented live performance footage
, curate collaborations
& promote South African music,
created by independent professional musicians, on their own terms

This ‘production house’ is also home to the team that record,film & edit this series - trumpet player/composer Marcus Wyatt, bassist/designer Romy Brauteseth, and sound engineer Luyanda Molao

HOTH origins - Romy Brauteseth & Marcus Wyatt 'Out of the Loop'
Thjs is pretty much how House on the Hill started, and was produced before we had decent cameras, lights or funding ! this was June/July 2020 - the Covid lockdown was in full effect, and self sufficiency was the medium imposed upon the project. It was during this time we had the idea for the community jazz showcase series, and this was an important first step in the development of HOTH. An important origins story from the archive !
Without being able to call upon any of our colleagues or peers, Romy and I set about creating and recording a series of loops and grooves, using only organic, non-digital instruments, implements and common household utensils (in plain english we used some pots and pans and all of our alter egos !). It is pretty groovy and a little quirky, but fun to watch, even if we do say so ourselves .... 😉

So many new jazz artists taking up the torch of sophisticated jazz. One that figures prominently in my mind besides Linda is Nubya Garcia among many others. It's so heartening to see that jazz is not dead but is thriving in the capable hands of this younger generation. I wish more people appreciated jazz of this caliber.

By the age of seventeen during the 1970's I had listened to, "live", most of the musicians who were active at the time, from Kiepie to Mankunku, Matshikiza, Duku Makasi, etc. , but the first time I saw our musicians act with strict professionalism and discipline was when Sakhile under the leadership of Khaya Mahlangu hit the scene, which was a bit unsettling because music at the time was treated as a hobby. Great to see him keeping up with the youngsters.
