This is a timelaps of a live demo i did with a group of students new to game asset modeling in Blender. The goal was to use basic poly modeling techniques rather than HD sculpting to develop a high quality AAA game asset using Blender. Many students with very limited Blender skills were able to develop very impressive models once the stress of difficult sculpting practices were not an issue. 2k...

This is awesome. Your narrating really helps. Definitely is helping me get a grasp on blender for making game models.
Music is very distracting
Bro I've just found your channel and I've been watching your blender modular design all night last night and I've already been improving LOVE your videos.
love this series m8
I love the rawness of this series. You do not edit out mistakes or things that don't work the way you thought. One issue with most tutorials (or anything) is that they only show the "perfect" take. In the real world, when we are learning, we make mistakes or can't figure something out when trying to go beyond. But seeing when things don't work out the way you originally thought, teaches us how to think outside of the box, and seeing little mistakes here and there shows us that even the best deal with that stuff and keeps motivation up, as well as shows us how to fix common issues.
2 years later and you are a god send already on the first part. You talked yourself down on the intro (Although the time-lapse was amazing looking). And even if all I watched was this video, You have helped me tremendously. Even though in the beginning, when you showed stuff like setting up the quick tools, I was feeling excited and impatient to get actually started, that stuff was super helpful and nothing in the video was a waste of time.
Thank you so much for the series! This helps a lot. For example I did not know that you can use the shear tool the way you did it with the corner pieces.
Ty for this series
You are the one. Thank man honestly i kind of knew this, but having you really walk me through and explain your though process is huge.
A fantastic tutorial series, ive already learnt so much
@13:50 when i try to extend the outside of the corner walls.... it breaks apart at the corner. F lol
In edit mode, go to vertex select and press A on your keyboard to select the entire mesh. Then Press M on your keyboard and select "Merge By Distance" Then you can go do the face select and move it like in the video without it breaking.
Wow! Thanks for making the series. I work in architecture, but never thought to do buildings in sections. This really makes sense. Can't wait to go through the tutorials. Appreciate this intro breakdown too. You speak just fine imo!!
1 4k texture atlas or 4 2k single texture. Which has the best performance?
Yes you are maybe not the best at teaching and yes I have to get used to your speechpatern - BUT you know your stuff - AND that is the most important thing! THANK you for the time & effort spent on the lessens. You are an hidden gem!
I followed a lot of your modular structures tutorial, and I have a question, how to add decals to the walls? or occlusions
This video is as good as the previous one in the series. Thanks! Now I'm on to the next one:)
Thank you a lot! This video was very helpful.
Yo, sup Johnny! Nice work you got there. Was wondering if you had free time or some socials I could talk you with for some tips if you up for it. Good work anyways! :D
oh snap! A new Blackwinter upload boys!!
Seeing as this is your latest video, and I've read the comments below me, I'm looking forward to your up coming videos. I'd like to thank you so much for your modular series! You don't give yourself enough credit in your disclaimers-😆 you're actually an exellent teacher and a lot of fun to listen to/watch work. I wish I has the opportunity to learn directly from you in person because you sound like a genuine great individual to be around too. That said, I hope all is going well for you in your life and you find the free time you require to return to your series. In the meantime, I will just repeat your exterior playlist until I can do it without having to rewatch. 😁 cheers!
Hello, I just discover your video serie. It seems to be what I need: I am a beginner in Blender and my goal is to create 3D models to print them with a 3D printer .. so it begins 🤗
what a time to be alive, all of these tools at our disposal and people like this putting hours of information up for FREE. I hope you gain the attention you deserve.
After all of this, just 1 question - why not use Array modifier ? But amazed by your work.
hey, ive build some walls and I would like to insert there windows and doors. Id pressed control & r and it was possible to add new vertical and horizontal lines. But after Ive finished one window there wasn't any lines suggested when I pressed control & r, there were only points, but I needed lines. What did I wrong?
Great tutorial series so far! I'm learning a lot. But what is this music? It's incredibly relaxing.
Johnny Blackwinter is the sickest name ive ever heard
Are video’s with interior modeling gonna come out? I really admire your work man very inspirational 👑
Absolutey! I am working on the first few of them right now actually. Once i can free up some spare time i will be jumping on it more regularly and try get some weekly uploads happening again. Thanks for the encouragement 😁
@@JohnnyBlackWinter I am waiting for that since July 2023 , haha
great tut thx. A few small tips by 26:53 : Snap with Edge or Vertic greatful tool and G and than press X or Z what ever you want then you can precise move with snap on a another Egde or Vertic
Hi. How many hours did it take to model this?
In all it was 4 or 5 days with 8 to 10 hours per day, so roughly 40+ hours i would guess
Instant sub. This is awesome.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you so much! ♥ I'll soon have a test for my first real job in the industry as an environment artist, and I was some unfamiliar with the whole trim sheet and modular workflow (as my main focus has been character modelling), so I'm looking forward to watch your whole series of modular design, to nail my test, so thanks for putting such a quality class for free for everyone ♥
My pleasure, good luck with everything 😎
Do you think you don't know how to teach, sir? I can say that this is the best explanation I have ever seen in my life. You taught me the simplest things very well. Thank you very much. Also, the music that you put in the video is professional and makes you focus on the explanation as much as possible.
Thanks so much 😁. I am used to teaching but more in a one to one setting or in person in a classroom. Giving lessons online was a new experience for me where i am not dealing with any one person specifically. Im glad it translated across in a positive way at least 😎
3:57 - Lol, "when you build a house, you don't build it with magic; you build it with tools." Best quote ever.
Funny but true 😂
Hey bro, how's it going ?. Just wondering if the part 2 modular series got scrapped or is it still happening ?.
Hey man, yeah its happening. I have a few videos in the making at the moment its just a matter of getting the free time to put it all together. It is for sure still going ahead though. Thanks for the interest, hopefully it will be kicking off soon
@@JohnnyBlackWinter No rush man. Just glad you still have plans on gracing us with your knowledge. Heck even if it's not until like October-November I'd be happy.
Thanks for sharing valuable knowledge
My pleasure, im happy to do it
do you have photo reference provided that you used in the video?
I didn't actually use reference in these videos, I have been doing it so long that I have an entire library of reference in my head that I pull from each time. I do recommend though, if starting out then gather yourself some reference
A whole month and no new videos :( Still... doing better than I am, It's still going to be a while before I have anything worthy of posting : (
Yeah i know, i really need more free time. Maybe i will quit my job and become a full time UA-cam lecturer 😬
Amazing work!
Thanks mate 😎
Amazing!
Thank you! Cheers!
Watching your videos makes me feel like I'm meditating with the greatest Buddhist monk of Blender!
Wow, il take that compliment haha. Thanks pal
loving the series so far thank you. one thing that might save some steps with the knife project instead of separating the roofing in the back and re attaching you can hide the faces and it will remove rejoining and merging verts. i just tested it out and hiding the faces you dont want cut through works and much quicker. just thought to point that out and seriously these videos are helping out tones
Solid advice, and makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing man, i will check it out
Hi Johnny, new sub here, love your modular series. Any plans on making this a tutorial? I see in the video you appear to be talking, just curious. Amazing work.
Hey man thanks for the compliment. This was done as part of a workshop for a group of students i teach and i had no plans to make it a tutorial as of this point. If there was enough interest though i would consider making my next one in real time so it could be made a tutorial here in youtube. UA-cam barely promotes my videos these days though, it likely wouldnt be worth the extra time commitment involved for the few hundred views my videos reach. I will consider it though, thanks for reaching out 😎
I can do everything here in Sketchup. Sketchup isnt only about straight walls...You can use sketchup for curved designs and classic architecture as well. Then export to UE to give it finishing touch.
True yeah, although i stopped using Sketchup in 2012. It was quite new and unpolished at the time, but i always had trouble with the topology being terrible when exported. Although I'm sure over 10 years later it has improved ten fold. I might look back into it again
im proud of myself because ive been learning blender for months and i know some shortcuts like this
WHY IS IT SO FUCKING LONG. IM SICK OF ACTING CALM
For the middle of the roof, you can select the face of it, go into Transform Orientations, select "Normal" then press the little plus sign. Now you have a transform orientation specifically for your roof. No eye measuring required. :)
Thank you so much for your videos I learned a lot! I love watching timelapses and getting to know the process behind the finished model
You are so welcome! 😁
Aasdd 0:14
Please increase video quality, I don't think it will take much more but would probably make a huge difference in ability to maintain focus on ui text ect.. I would absolutly love to see tutorial style vids with slightly higher quality video!!!! your modular series was extreamly interesting but I have a hard time seeing after a while when trying to focus. A little extra sharpness would go a long way!
Noted! Thanks for the feedback, i will look into upscaling video resolution in future
@@JohnnyBlackWinter appreciated, hower I am not sure what you are using for capture / encoding. I can only say that "upscale" does not sound right considering I get clean video with OBS at 1080 with 5000 Kbps bit rate saved and then uploaded as I did test some time back but never stared creating content worthy of keeping up.
😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰
I'm finding your unplanned, conversational style of explanation to be way, way more digestible than other tutorials I've watched. Planning on watching the whole series. Thanks for taking the time to make these.
Glad you like them!
